Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

this topic really matters to u, hm? every second post or so of yours is about on this topic.
well,
…
yea…
i guess being angry at ai is easier than admitting to myself i've wasted 4 years of my life (and counting) studying for a job that won't exist by the time i'm out of uni…
and, it feels like recently ai just turned everything i cared about to shit. art, writing, programming, gaming, computers in general really
i should care about more things
Oof again super grateful I chose healthcare. They're still trying to shove ai in but at least for now they know Claude can't wrangle a wildly verbally aggressive schizophrenic who's also had a stroke and is perpetually covered in piss out of the dayroom and into the shower for the fifth time today.
I feel the same... 6 years spent on 2 degrees to get into game development, and as soon as I graduate from the last one, the aftermath of COVID and then AI burn the industry and cause it to be nearly impossible to get into for the average junior and layoffs are increasing each year... Then people say we gotta just "deal with it and stop complaining" 🙄
I'm tired of it all
i feel this so much :<
honestly i might even be fine with it, build my own ai-free bubble, and just keep doing the things i like the manual way, if my job which i am required to work to survive and which i previously enjoyed hadn't turned to shit because of ai and is threatened to stop existing entirely threatening my lifelyhood
honestly at that point i think i’m gonna work in something else and just code as a hobby. unless i can find a really cool job it’s the only way i feel like i can code without hating it
AI is a new excuse to not hire junior developers. The financial crisis was another excuse. The dot com bubble was another excuse. Junior developers are needed, but hiring authorities hate to employ them.
Nah, you're valid for this. Anger has purpose. You could resign yourself to the sad life of AI dominance, or you can get mad and set fire to a data center.
Yknow? This really begs the question about why more data centers aren't being burned down... 💅🔥

FR THOOOUGH.
I WANTED TO GO ON THE DATE TO THE WOODS TO MICROWAVE ROCKS SO BAD, BUT SHE (my ex) SAID IT WAS JUST A JOKE 😭
i wholeheartedly agree with ya on this. my passion keeps getting messed with.
The job is going to keep existing, but companies really don't want to hire people right now, specially at entry level
There is so much to hate about AI, but programming has not been about typing out code letter by letter for a long time, probably before you and I even started doing it. IDEs have had autocompletion and "generating" whole classes / methods / whatever structure for a couple of years now (although deterministically). Low code / no code has been growing in popularity before LLMs. Generative AI is out of pandoras box, there is no way it will vanish out of software development one day. But we're also not yet at a point where any sales asshole is able or even willing to create effective and resilient systems as we have seen a couple of times in the recent past. Maybe we will never get there.
Concepts and architecture matter more than code, they always have. Focus on the bigger picture and learn to use LLMs as a tool, in ways and situations / workflows where it unarguably works (even if you doubt it), but refuse to become a meat proxy that became unable to answer a slack message without AI. Tech is not the problem, it's a handful of people ruining it for everyone while getting stupid crazy rich by fucking up our planet and the people living on it. Don't let it take away your passion for computers, or else they have won.
I usually only see this obsession with... u know... peeps within the bubble.
but yea I get that its kinda a coping mechanism. it hit em similarly, maybe not as strongly and things do suck big time rn. Anyway I looked at wonderful paintings in a museum today. awesome stuff, really expressive and just - strong.
I have yet to see this "bubble" of anti-AI sentiment. Its impossible to be completely locked in a anti-AI feedback loop when the entire world around you is pushing it constantly.
Yes, people can get stuck surrounded by ideas and misconceptions in a way that creates a harmful feedback loop, for sure. Not once, however, have I heard an argument against the growing anti-AI movement that wasn't just meekly defending the slop machine with objectively invalid points.
None of us are immune to propaganda and misinformation, but most times I've seen activists (or progressives in general) be told to "get out of their bubble" or "see the other side", it's nothing more than a convenient way to wrongly paint those arguments as short-sighted or ill-informed.
I wish AI were so benign that "2 posts in a month" could be considered excessive, but it's not.
yea I know it really is excessive even in the news that generally dont cover this stuff.
it really is something where if ur just strongly against the whole agentic whatevers and stuff... its very hard to ignore. and ye that sucks big time.
Well, it is kinda all over the news, big corps are trying to push it everywhere and there are a lot of reasons to be angry about it and think it is unethical to use it
yeye its just that... everyone else posting so frequently about it is within the bubble.
Also happens outside the bubble, I sometimes post a lot about it because it's so infuriating, it affected multiple of my hobbies and my career in so many negative ways...
its quite a downhill time for individuals rn I think. but I believe art will remain being a thing peeps appreciate and sloppy things will quiet down cuz yea - peeps don't like em as much.
Art is being hit quite hard to be honest... It'll still exist as a hobby, but as a career it's getting harder to get into as more and more companies are replacing it with AI.
Look at Nvidia constantly trying to improve their AI to make game-ready 3D assets. It's not totally there yet, but they're determined to do so... So not even 3D art is safe. And that just means in the future everyone's going to be paying same full price for games that visually and coding-wise has been made with AI. Same price, significantly less quality
I just pray they don't manage to get it 100% replacement, but I'm also not holding my breath anymore...
It does comfort me that there is a lot of backlash to AI art in games for now... I just hope it doesn't become normalised and more accepted over the years.
Art should be fine, but I fear that passion will no longer be the same in everything related to code. It's harder to convince people that code is also a way to express yourself, that it should not be touched by AI, so I fear that what I liked will never be the same
oooooh yes I can see that. that is sad, lots of shader ideas originate thru trying
