I remember reading this story in Reader's Digest back in the 1970s or 80s. An oldie but a goodie.
I remember finding old (translated) Reader's Digests in vacation homes that seemed like they would be fun and interesting to adults. So I looked up the current website, but unfortunately it looks pretty shit now.
Back in the 70s'and 80s we didn't have cell phones, so we took the readers digest or a garfield comic book to take a dump with.
But ya that site is terrible.

ya the story is older than I am.(but still funny)
Most variations I've heard was usually the dog dug up a dead cat or a pet chicken.
I remember reading similar story about a guy that was buried but then somehow got out days later back in school. From what I remember it was a very old story, about 2000 years old. And I think it was based on even older stories from Egypt or something.
