The former Florida surgeon general is rebuking claims by the DeSantis administration that updated COVID-19 vaccines have "not been proven to be safe or effective" and that the shots should not be recommended for individuals under the age of 65.

The COVID vaccines remain "very, very safe, and have a really proven efficacy, particularly against preventing severe disease," Dr. Scott Rivkees, the former Florida surgeon general during the initial years of the pandemic, told ABC News.

"If they say that COVID vaccines are not safe and that they are not effective, the onus is on them to show those data," Rivkees said.

Half of Americans believe in at least one conspiracy theory.

[–] Nusm@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

I’m not one to believe a bunch of tinfoil hat conspiracies, but I absolutely believe in the theory that Musk and Spez are being paid by dark/right-wing big money to run Xwitter and Reddit into the ground. Both platforms had large amounts of liberal free speech, but many left after Musk’s purchase and Spez’s shenanigans. I do believe that it’s a clandestine effort to reduce the public speech of Democrats and left-leaning individuals off of two of the largest platforms. Both are hemorrhaging cash, but, if they’re being paid more under the table, it would make perfect sense.

Okay, but what’s a conspiracy theory? Is the bush administration making up WMDs one still? Thinking Brett kavanaugh is probably a rapist? Thinking OJ did it?

[–] Can_you_change_your_username@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Also, how strongly do you believe it and how does it affect your actions. I believe that the military could conclusively prove that the UFO stuff is terrestrial in origin but don't because it would expose national secrets either in military technology development or intelligence gathering abilities (it's experimental aircraft but might not all be ours). I recognize that I don't have good evidence for that belief and that it's a conspiracy theory and I'm not out here trying to hack government servers or attacking politicians it prove it.

[–] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

It's a better theory than literal aliens. No species smart enough for interstellar travel would be dumb enough to go near a planet controlled by angry apes with nukes.

[–] idiomaddict@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I’m sure I believe in things that are technically conspiracy theories, such as that even BPA-free plastic is unsafe for food, but research on it is being stifled.

Do I avoid plastic? Not really, I’m lazy. Do I talk about it to people? Nope. Do I casually believe that corporate institutions are speeding my death through greed? Yes, but zero other effects on my life… that I can tell at least. I guess my family could be planning an intervention about how I need to come out of the fog.

How is OJ Simpson murdering people a conspiracy theory? And how is Kavanaugh attempting rape a conspiracy?

[–] TruTollTroll@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Because OJ, got a not guilty verdict and many believe he really did kill Nicole and her lover.. that's the conspiracy.. on both sides... the guily or not guilty belief.. we will never know for sure what actually happened there..

Kavanhuah raping someone, I can't prove it but he is spinless conservative Christians with power unchecked and I would bet the claims are very true... until there is a trial with evidence that proves it, it remains a conspiracy. 😔

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

OJ killing someone was a solo act, not a conspiracy. Kavanaugh acted alone, also not a conspiracy. Deniers of both have some wild conspiracy theories that shadowy figures planted evidence.

[–] TruTollTroll@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The conspiracy is if you believe is if they really did or did not do it... not if they what they did, was a solo act.

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago

You’re describing a regular theory, not a conspiracy theory.

[–] idiomaddict@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Attempt is a wiggle word that doesn’t 100% differ from the official position. Believing OJ almost certainly killed his wife and Kavanaugh almost certainly raped his classmate are both opinions counter to the official government position, which, in OJ’s case, has been actively affirmed by governmental institutions. You didn’t say what that study defines as a conspiracy theory, but the above sounds reasonable to me as a definition.

That’s why I asked though, how do they define conspiracy theories?

Edit: changed probably to almost certainly. My own wiggle word

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

You missed the point. OJ killing someone was a solo act, not a conspiracy. Kavanaugh acted alone, also not a conspiracy. Instead, deniers of both have created some wild theories that shadowy figures coordinated planting evidence for ulterior motives, that is a conspiracy theory. Whether you believe OJ did or didn’t do it is not a conspiracy either way.

[–] idiomaddict@feddit.de -1 points 1 year ago

You missed the point.

That’s what I keep trying to tell you. Can you just link the survey about it so I can figure out exactly what they mean?

I said below that I’m pretty sure that research on the harmfulness of plastics in food is being repressed (really just unfunded, but that’s effectively the same in the current research environment). That seems like it would probably fit your definition, but at least to me, it feels like a very different thing from thinking the moon landing was a hoax.

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 1 points 1 year ago

Some of them are actually likely to be real, like the CIA being involved in the Kennedy assassination.

[–] idiomaddict@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You’ve given no evidence for this after I asked you repeatedly for a source to figure out what is meant by conspiracy theory.

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I was replying to your examples of OJ and Kavanaugh, not sure why you made an upthread comment but whatever.

From Wikipedia:

A conspiracy theory is an explanation for an event or situation that asserts the existence of a conspiracy by powerful and sinister groups.

A conspiracy, also known as a plot, is a secret plan or agreement between people (called conspirers or conspirators) for an unlawful or harmful purpose.

It always has to be MULTIPLE people. A single person cannot, by definition, do a conspiracy. OJ Simpson acting alone cannot be engaged in a conspiracy. Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulting his classmate makes him a criminal but the act is still not a conspiracy. (If you believe the Jews or the CIA made him do it or framed him for their goals, then that would be a conspiracy theory). How many comments do we need to go back and forth to explain basic English definitions?

[–] idiomaddict@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Show me the source or admit you don’t have one. I no longer want to go through you as a middleman, because we’re clearly talking past each other.

You’re well within your right to think me stupid, but I want to understand, so please help if you can.

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are you trolling? I just gave you the definitions of the term conspiracy theory. What are you even going on about? Are you trying to argue a specific conspiracy? Go troll somewhere else.

[–] idiomaddict@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

So I’m guessing you don’t have a source and made it up. But sure, I’m trolling.
