A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

I have a somewhat beginner camera canon EOS rebel T7 and will be traveling to NYC this weekend. What are some tips for safely photographing? I’m of course a little worried about getting my camera stolen or damaged and wasn’t sure if there are some recommendations on what to do and not to do. We will be in the Manhattan area and one night in Brooklyn (Williamsburg area)

As long as you keep your camera on your person, theft will not be a concern. This is one of the safest big cities in America and one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world. You’ll be surrounded by thousands of other people with all kinds of cameras, especially in Manhattan.

The real safety concern (that visitors sometimes overlook) is moving vehicles and people. Please try to be aware of pedestrians in a rush, bikes, delivery e-bikes, and cars whenever you’re shooting. It’s easy to step off the curb with your eye up to the viewfinder not realizing you’re stepping in front of a bike lane, for example.

But have a blast! Shooting in New York is absolute best.

Thank you!! I’ve been there a ton and have walked it late at night without being too scared so I like to think I have a little street sense but have never shot it. Thank you for the advice
