A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

Hi photography friends,

I'm looking to upgrade my backup solution for my tens of thousands of photos. Currently I have a 2(?)TB external HDD that is almost full. When I upgrade, should I move to an SSD instead? Any preferred brands?

Also, and I know this is a really stupid question, but when it comes to copying my photos from one location to another, does the image retain original quality? In other words, does copying your images degrade their quality? And if so, is there a way around that?

Thanks everyone!

Sign up for Backblaze so that you can backup to the cloud. Then get a 5TB HDD for local backup (to replace your 2TB drive). I like OWC (if you’re on Mac). Then keep your working files on your internal hard drive (just the files that are recent that you want to edit, periodically move them to the 5TB drive for archiving). No, copying doesn’t affect image quality.
