Did something happen to UKs internet?

[–] King@blackneon.net 74 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (5 children)

UK now requires a lot of websites to age check their users.

What happened is that a lot of websites either had to implement a way to check users ages or block users from UK completely.

A good example here is Imgur which blocked UK users. What inspired this meme for me is this blog post posted on Hacker news.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 22 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Meanwhile 4chan ignored it. Got a fine and laughed. Then as far as I can tell, nothing happened. They are not going to pay the fine because why the fuck would they? 4chan still works just fine in the UK, you don't even need a VPN.

The ICO has always been all bark and no trousers. The big websites are just cowards, if they all told them where to stick their stupid law the government would have no comeback.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 5 points 5 days ago

It's ofcom, not the ICO. Are they cowards or are they hungry for data?

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 24 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Oh man...do they also try to throw a "to protect the kids!"-sticker Onto that destructive bullshit?

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 31 points 6 days ago (1 children)

That is literally the expressed reason for it. Think of the children. And people are like, "YEAH PROTECT THE CHILDREN, DISMANTLE ALL CIVIL RIGHTS, WE ARE BEING INVADED BY PEDOPHILES, ONLY WAY TO FIGHT THEM IS TO END DEMOCRACY AND LET CORPORATIONS TAKE OVER!"

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

That is the disgusting part. I mean yeah, pedos are legion and should be dealt with, but all those measures won't gonna do it. Not even remotely.

I'm just so tired of being constantly fed bullshit and lies. We're not all apathic or ignorant goddamit.

Truth is our Politician's are so out of touch with the time.

Chat control for one allows governments to read all chats, but at the same time reading and opening physical mail is still considered illegal.

Same with age verification some of these politicians thing it would work like going to the amusement park and getting your height checked to ride the rollercoaster.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 4 points 5 days ago

What really stupid is if I really want to see people take all their clothes off I can do that right now without even using a VPN because there's plenty of websites that have just ignored the government.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 days ago

I guess it never really was intended to protect kids but just to add another layer of surveillance. What could be more cool if every IP could be associated with an ID. Well, except those who are actual pedos, other criminals or just people who aren't agnostic to privacy and data protection.

So, as usual, it's just another attack on peter average.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 9 points 6 days ago

Theres porn on the Internet and we all know kids are incapable of doing something like going to page 2 of Google results.

[–] purplemonkeymad@programming.dev 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I'm not convinced this is the reason for the Imgur block. They were asked by the UK about how they processed the data for minors at the start of the year. They refused to provide it, and were then fined. When the age check was implemented I think they used that as an excuse to block the UK, so they "weren't operating in it" and didn't need to answer the questions.

The UK gov disagrees with that and is planning more legal action iirc.

If they had done the block without that law, people would be asking why they were not revealing how they process data of minors.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 8 points 6 days ago

Should just ignore all messages from the UK. 4chan still works here and they are refusing to pay the fine.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

oOOH they LIKE that! "How old are you child? Are you 7? 8? 9? Because if you're 18 we are not interested. There is no way this can backfire, see, come here why don't you give me your data and your mobile phone number. Are you old enough to have a government ID yet? No? Goood, goood."

[–] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Sign in with Facebook is probably a huge hit /s

[–] HexesofVexes@lemmy.world 30 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Imgur blocking is a bit of a pain - half the mods in steam are missing images in their description.

The online safety act also means we get to submit ID to view anything construed as "adult". Very "av you got a loiscencse for that" these days without a VPN.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 16 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I FEEL SO MUCH GOD DAMNED SAFER THANK GOD THAT THIS ENDED PEDOPHILIA AND TERRORISM SUCH A SMALL PRICE TO PAY FOR THAT

[–] HexesofVexes@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago

I COMPLETELY AGREE - THIS ALL MAKES PERFECT SENSE.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 13 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Very soon, you'll need a VPN loicence.

[–] HexesofVexes@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

Yep, because it was never about protecting the children ;)

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 5 days ago

They're trying to go that route but there's a bunch of practical problems with that that they haven't considered.

[–] nialv7@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

I just use tor. A bit hit or miss whether I will be blocked by the website, but it's okay.

[–] twinnie@feddit.uk 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Don’t know. No problems for me (UK).

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 0 points 6 days ago

Same here. No idea what anyone is talking about.
