Food compost is distinct from humanure compost. The humanure is done in a bucket under a toilet seat, which is emptied into a barrel. It stays in the barrel for months or years, depending on the climate, until the temperature decreases to room temperature...indicating that the process of killing the pathogens is complete. Then it's safe to put on fruit trees.
