I seem to remember that there was a biography about Elon Musk that detailed his treatment by his father. It's not good, and I thought they were estranged for a long time.

You want to know why Elon is as fucked up as he is, you just look to this man right here.

The guy has all the money in the world. He can buy a big island, be happy, and be king dipshit of everything he sees. But no, he made a choice to keep being an insufferable nazi asshole to the rest of us instead.

I'm of the opinion that a lot of people if not most arguably don't really make a choice about who they are. They don't live with intentionality, they don't consider their agency, they just run on autopilot with the baseline personhood they were built with.

There's a good chance that Elon has never made a real choice in his life. He's probably one of the most pathetic people in the world.

Not to say that absolves blame, you're absolutely responsible for your own actions and lack of thinking.

I think you are spot-on with this, and that it very much includes many "successful" people who others automatically assume they should try to emulate. It's especially bad here in the US.

People need philosophy. I mean we all have a philosophy, but if you don't take the time to explicitly define yours, it just defaults to whatever you picked up along the way.

[–] Baggie@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Exactly, an internal system of how you should act and what you believe is so important.

People can be both a victim in their childhood and a perpetrator afterward. Our parents have a big impact on us, but it’s our personal responsibility to deal with the mess we inherited. Who Elon is today is entirely his own doing.

Absolutely. At no point was I excusing Elon's actions. Those are his own.

Who Elon is today is entirely his own doing.

Disagree. He's the product of his own actions on top of his father's. With a better father he might be completely different. His father started him off with a fucked up set of morals.

He's said he left to get away from what was going on there and his father, but something might have stuck, or made him more susceptible to going down the bad road.

Like wtf is up with him refusing to acknowledge his daughter and dead name her and say the woke school killed his son.

Did being raised in an area with views do that, even though he tries to leave, or did he come to that entirely on his own?

Either way raised in it or not, people can change, and ultimately he has not.

Edit: also the timing with his daughter is around where things started changing outwardly more dramatically, and he's stated it was part of why he got into right wing politics.

He was already very racist in private beforehand, and Vivian has talked about how he routinely tried to make her man up as a kid. Also all of his children were conceived using sex selective ivf.

He always had a fair bit of his dad in him. Very much the vibes of the dad who swears he'll never hit his kids like his dad did, so he just emotionally abuses them and starts to see his dad's perspective when his kids go no contact.

I think the big turn for him was his daughter being anti rich and the rise of anti rich sentiments in the modern American left. That and the lawsuits for racial discrimination in his workplaces

All his living children. He had a child with his first wife that died of SIDS which was naturally conceived. And ya his daughter played a big part in at least becoming outwardly visible.

Thats a good way of putting it.

To many people blame the parents for what the person is as an adult. They may have influence, but they also have the ability to make their own choices. He's a fucked up guy so on his own. His father had very little to do with that.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's just a coincidence they're both white supremacists then?

[–] ChanchoManco@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That's addressed on the "They may have influence..." part.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

You can be a white supremacist without you family, and you can break the cycle.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone -2 points 1 day ago

His father had very little to do with that.

Are you his fucking therapist? What an absurd claim to make with such certainty.
