The former president suggested sending the NYPD officers running security around his trial to be deployed to quell protests at Columbia University

Donald Trump would really like his fans to protest outside of his criminal hush money trial in Manhattan.

While protesters are allowed to be present in designated areas outside of the Manhattan Criminal Court, MAGA aficionados have shown little willingness to organize around the trial. On Monday, a disgruntled Trump called for security around the trial to be eased so that his followers would feel more comfortable gathering to support him.

Imagine any other defendant in a criminal proceeding suggesting to reduce security in order for their supporters to disrupt proceedings.

Jury tampering is illegal after all.

At least, for everyone else it is.

[–] Hobbes_Dent@lemmy.world 61 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Especially a defendant already on a very ~~thin~~ thick rope regarding his conduct towards jurors and others.

But no. Here it is, right there, stochastic terrorism in inviting supporters and suggesting that security be loosened. For a narcissistic former president. Totally normal.

If enough people abstain in November, this criminal will be our narcissistic future president too.

[–] phx@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 months ago

Yeah we know what happened when his cronies reduced security on Jan6...

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 101 points 7 months ago (2 children)

He's trying to J6 the trial.

Call in the national guard Joe.

[–] gregorum@lemm.ee 31 points 7 months ago (2 children)

The NYPD is the size of an army and armed as well as one. They can handle it.

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 20 points 7 months ago (1 children)

As long as they are there in advance and prepared.

Its not like the capitol police were underfunded.

One has tanks, drones, spy planes, literal roadblocks builtin into all the streets around the courthouse, and regularly boasts about their anti-aircraft abilities. The other protects people who aren’t even in their office buildings half the time. Not even close to the same.

Not sure if talking about NYPD or national guard.

NYCLU article about some of NYPD’s capabilities. Keyword some of their tech, some of their kit is directly from military contractors and can not be discussed at all. IIRC the last major National Guard deployments in NYC have all been for food deployment, including hand delivering lunches during COVID in the suburbs.

[–] DemBoSain@midwest.social 2 points 7 months ago

Weren't they just in the subways collecting tickets? The National Guard, not NYPD...

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 14 points 7 months ago

But whose side are they on? I don't trust them to protect democracy.

[–] DemBoSain@midwest.social 4 points 7 months ago

I believe in detective terminology, this is can now be called the modus operandi.

Trump: "So how do we get a mistrial?"

Trump Lawyer: "Well, something has to go really wrong in the trial, like a juror gets shot or som-"

Trump: "Ok, you can stop now. I just had a great idea."

[–] HurlingDurling@lemmy.world 15 points 7 months ago

"I just had a great idea! It's the greatest idea! No one has better ideas than me! Well, except North Korea, he's a good man, a smart man... SLEEPY JOE... not the best..."

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 43 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The obvious response to this is to increase security. By a lot.

[–] InternetUser2012@midwest.social 26 points 7 months ago (1 children)

It might be safest to keep him locked away in a cell where nothing bad could happen to him. For his own protection of course. I'd even be ok if the security guard walked away for a bit and accidentally turned off the camera.

[–] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 15 points 7 months ago

It's 2024. Just let him video call in from a prison cell.

Bonus is that you can mute him any time you want.

Manhattan is where Trump lived and did business for most of his life.

Manhattan voted against Donnie in 2016 and 2020. When the 2020 results were finally announced people braved Covid restrictions to dance in the streets.

Trump should be begging for more security.

The orange asshole is missing his fawning syncophants and needs to hear their voices sing his praises daily.

Maybe he thinks that'll help him stay awake during court.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 15 points 6 months ago

Fox thinks hen house needs flimsier doors and more windows.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Fat orange sleepy fuck is in no position to call for anything. But again he is allowed since everyone involved is scared shitless of him. Truly insane the amount of fear they exhibit

[–] BlueJayOakerson@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

No one’s scared of him.?he makes people a lot of money. There’s a reason cnn and msnbc have spent years giving him 24/7 attention and free advertisement.

They desperately want him back in because it was great for ratings.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Smells like fear to me. If it was ratings throwing him in jail would send them through the roof.

[–] BlueJayOakerson@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Throwing him in jail would be a story for a week. Definitely not enough to keep the gravy train rolling

[–] slurpeesoforion@startrek.website 2 points 6 months ago

I wonder how New York City would treat rank and file MAGA.
