players are able to claim an “officially licensed, commemorative Paris 2024 NFT Digital Pin.”

Oh sweet an official Olympics digital pin that I can pay real money for and no one else can just view for free whenever they want! Oh wait... Here's one someone paid $200 for.

You wouldn’t download an NFT.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Too late. I downloaded this one. Take me to NFT jail.

I remember when NFTs first appeared. I misunderstood their purpose thinking they were a clever way to transfer intellectual property rights for something. Only to later learn that it's basically poop, completely worthless.

I think it's a cool idea with awful implementations. Rather than turning the idea into a solution for something existing, everyone and their mother decided to create a fake problem instead.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

And thus the problem with every make company and AI right now.

NFTs are a clever way to transfer intellectual property rights for something.

It's just that the something is worthless... And IP is imaginary.

I like how it's a digital picture of a physical pin, so it still has the bits in the back as if anyone can just put it on their lapel or backpack.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 months ago

Yeah I can't help think the design and calling it a pin is all just a trick to scan people who don't know what an NFT is.

I would love to have a metal physical one

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

Best I can do is $200 for a link to the gif.

[–] chetradley@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Wow that actually looks really cool. Now, how much do I owe you?

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 months ago

That'll be $200

Tell you what.

You want to make believe esports resemble sports in any way and are actually worthy of countries competing in them? Make them completely open source and make balance/rule decisions based on the input of an international committee advocating for the various perspectives.

Then it's still obviously not a sport, but at least it's not controlled by an arbitrary for profit company.

[–] arkthos@yiffit.net 3 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I agree for the most part. A company holding an iron grip on the game and keep the competitive scene alive as a marketing tactic is a recipe for disaster if we are to take it seriously as a long term sport. A company will not hesitate to shut things down if they unanimously decide they no longer want it to exist.

Regarding whether esports are sports or not is kind of arbitrary. The same as how we call competitive chess and darts and formula 1 sports despite being more mental than physical in nature.

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Formula 1 is extremely physical. Try looking at the drivers’ necks and then tell me it isn’t a physical sport.

[–] conciselyverbose@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Zero of those are close to sports either.

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Formula 1 is extremely physical and is absolutely a sport. The average person’s neck would give out after one lap in an F1 car, if they were even able to drive the thing (which you cannot without significant experience and training).

I guess at the 2028 Olympics they'll be jumping on the AI bandwagon.

[–] lnxtx@feddit.nl 9 points 3 months ago

Everyone pays for the Olympic Games via taxes.
The IOC be like: gimme more money.

What a scam.

[–] Phegan@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

NFTs, Saudi Arabia. Full of Ls for the IOC

[–] Cowbob12@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Man this Olympics have been extremely disappointing on these aspects, for me personally I began to tune out during the initial ceremony when they started to pull the whole minions scene they did. It just feels like either a cash grab or a corporate scam.

Always has been.
