In a contentious and misleading post on social media, JD Vance, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, launched an attack on Vice President Kamala Harris’s support for LGBTQ+ inclusivity. Vance falsely accused Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Khelif of being transgender, causing widespread condemnation and backlash from human rights advocates.

It's important to note the reason all this kicked off is a Russian boxing organization (that let her fight multiple times) disqualified her after she beat an undefeated rising Russian star, and won't disclose what test they accuse her of failing.

But they have said it wasn't the testosterone test.

So it's not surprising Republicans immediately ran with it

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 44 points 3 months ago (1 children)

And, they DQed her in a way that erased her win, making that Russian boxer still undefeated on the record.

But yeah, they claimed she failed a test, but won't reveal who did it, or the methodology used, meaning it's not replicable and thus NOT GOOD SCIENCE.

It was made up in the first place anyways. Russia has 0 credibility on the national stage. If a Russian institute announced that the sky was blue, I'd go out to check. He should be ashamed citing their bullshit, but I suspect that's an emotion he's incapable of.

[–] Cephalotrocity@biglemmowski.win 35 points 3 months ago

It's actually worse. They said "it wasn't the Testosterone test" when the DQ was announced in October, then yesterday said "it was the Testosterone test, or she has XY karyotype" depending on whichever one of the speakers you believe.

Fool me once, your fault. Twice? I'm an idiot.

It's not a Russian organization, it's the IBA - which is the premier amateur boxing organization/confederation, which is currently headed by a Russian national.

And his time in office has been a smashing success, such as when the IOC withdrew their recognition of the IBA, which removed the IBA from any involvement/participation in Olympic Boxing.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It’s not a Russian organization,

It wasn't a Russian organization...

But most of it's operations have been moved to Russia, and their sole sponsor is a Russian company...

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Boxing_Association#2023%E2%80%93present

The guy has even canceled elections to replace him. By now it's essentially a kidnapped organization, literally nothing prior to 2023 matters anymore. It is only the IBA still in name only.

Like the old NRA takeover in the 70s.

That is what I was responding to. Your flippant dismissal of what the IBA actually is: a highly relevant intentional sporting organization for boxing, which is still true despite their current situation.

Shit on them for everything you laid out, their farsical antics this week, blatant corruption, or any other number of issues, but don't intentionally mislead and mischaracterize them to an audience that most likely largely ignorant of amateur boxing or combat sports in general. Or at least, that is assuming as there are no active combat sports communities on Lemmy that I have seen, be it MMA, boxing, kick boxing, etc.

Shame Vance turned his back on the LGBTQ+. Mamaw tried her best

"I'll never forget the time I convinced myself that I was gay. I was eight or nine, maybe younger, and I stumbled upon a broadcast by some fire-and-brimstone preacher. The man spoke about the evils of homosexuals, how they had infiltrated our society, and how they were all destined for hell absent some serious repenting. At the time, the only thing I knew about gay men was that they preferred men to women. This described me perfectly: I disliked girls, and my best friend in the world was my buddy Bill. Oh no, I'm going to hell."

When he brought up the issue with his grandmother — known to Vance as "Mamaw" — she replied bluntly: "Don't be a fucking idiot, how would you know that you're gay?"

When Vance explained his reasoning, she laughed.

"JD, do you want to suck dicks?" she said, according to the book.

The young Vance, apparently "flabbergasted," said: "Of course not!"

"Then you're not gay. And even if you did want to suck dicks, that would be okay," she replied. "God would still love you."

🤣 Is this story true? If so, respect for Granny.

[–] Cadeillac@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

He seriously wrote it in his book. No telling if it is actually true or not

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 41 points 3 months ago (4 children)

That's right, conservatives want a candidate for the most powerful position on earth to worry about hypothetical nonsensical situations where men will go through years of medical and psychological treatments just to punch women in the face.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Tbf I wouldn't mind going through years of medical and psychological treatments if it meant I was allowed to punch whoever I wanted to in the face. Not for sports or for transgender reasons, just for fun. Turn me into a weapon please.

[–] evranch@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 months ago

Just try it the other way. Random face punching today, years of medical and psychological treatment later!

[–] ieightpi@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Amygdala too big and cerebrum too small

[–] MindTraveller@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 months ago

Why would any man go through chemical castration to punch a woman in the face when he can just become a conservative politician?

[–] UnityDevice@startrek.website 30 points 3 months ago

When Algeria is too woke for you, you should really reconsider things.

[–] amio@kbin.run 25 points 3 months ago

Hm. That's weird.

[–] MissJinx@lemmy.world 19 points 3 months ago (1 children)

"gender eligibility test." WTF
I do think you should have some baseline hormone tests because of doping but "gender eligibility" is kind of distopian lol

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 12 points 3 months ago

Very on brand for an organization controlled by a government that considers being openly LGBTQ+ inherently harmful to the point that it jails people for it, though 🤬

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

How is this “oniony”? This is pretty much on point for this weirdo.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 24 points 3 months ago

Because the GOP norm IS as oniony as anything, except much less clever 🤷

[–] radicalautonomy@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago (3 children)

I really want someone to punch this Vance kid in the weiner.

[–] spookedintownsville@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

The couch did.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

As all people of intelligence and taste do 🤜

[–] Sweetpeaches69@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I think Imane should be allowed to punch him as hard as she can. Break some ribs.

[–] ef9357@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 3 months ago

He’s just so weird.

[–] NoiseColor@startrek.website 4 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I can't believe how terribly this is going for the Republicans. They can't stop themselves self.

Or it's just the lemmy bubble and nobody cares? But project 25 that they are failing to distance themselves from like they are stone drunk in front of an officer, the cat lady thing, defense against people calling them weird,...

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 15 points 3 months ago (1 children)

To quote the Today, Explained podcast's intro to their episode about Project 2025:

the problems all started when people read what was in it

[–] NoiseColor@startrek.website -2 points 3 months ago (2 children)

They counted on that not happening? 🤣

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Wouldn't surprise me tbh. The stereotypical Republican voter isn't known for reading 900+ pages of ANYTHING, let alone policy and strategy proposals 😄

[–] riskable@programming.dev 6 points 3 months ago (2 children)

The tend to like the Sparks Notes Jesus who was born and then immediately killed off. There's a whole lot of "liberal talking points" in between those two events and it's just easier to pretend those parts doesn't exist.

[–] NoiseColor@startrek.website 2 points 3 months ago
[–] MentallyExhausted@reddthat.com 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The “weird” thing is so hilarious, they absolutely hate it and their only defense is “but drag queens.” They’re so fucking obsessed with LGBQT+ and can’t pivot away from it even as you make them look weirder and weirder.

[–] NoiseColor@startrek.website 3 points 3 months ago

It's a self destruct path. Right? I mean, it's so obvious now.
