This story is insane to me, I dont know how these cops haven't been arrested.

They get called to a crime scene with the caller saying that a white man was being aggressive. They got there, asked the first white dude they saw what was going on, and then the white dude just pointed at a black dude and said the black guy stole his phone.

Despite the call literally being about an aggressive white dude, these cops immediately chase after this black guy, pull up and start yelling at him, tackle him and then start punching him within like 10 seconds of getting out of their truck.

Did not confirm any suspicions, didn't even talk to the black guy for one moment, and then afterwards they blow off his wife and never seem to think "jeez it's weird this guy who just stole a phone is using it to FaceTime someone while leisurely walking down the street".

This is so bad it has to be intentional malice. I just don't understand how a country can call itself land of the free and then have police do shit like this with no consequences.

The man was literally deaf, any normal sane person would have figured that out quickly.

They haven't been arrested because cops are above the law. They could have executed him and they'd just get a paid vacation and a promotion in the next county over.

Remember this is Maricopa county. That's where Joe Arpaio was for years with his tent city incarceration in the desert and forcing inmates to wear pink underwear as if that was somehow embarrassing.

He may be gone, but most of the actual deputies would be the same. It's not like the various city police departments were much different across the valley.

Haven't you heard. Any black person is one finger pointed at them away from a beating or death. And don't get me started on the number of handicapped people police kill every year. Being blackand deft? In America it was a matter of when, not if. I can't describe to individuals what it's like to be black in America. Every time a cop goes past you it could be your last day on alive. Regardless of the situation cops and the justice system sees you as a threat. You live your life in fear and they know it. That's part of the reason or modern justice system was created. To ensure black people can only get so far unless they work in entertainment or politics the glass ceiling is still unbroken.

This video from Civil Rights Lawyer has more context about how things went down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ikcRlI3QQM

The cops were called by Circle-K employees to trespass a white male off the property who had been aggressive and bothering staff and other customers. When they arrived, they spoke to the man, who said he'd had an altercation with a black male who left, and he pointed across the street. Rather than stay and do any sort of investigation about what actually happened, they took off, found McAlpin, and started assaulting him when he didn't immediately respond to verbal commands.

They got to the scene and jumped on the first person of color that they saw, without even speaking to anyone about what the issue was. This was straight up racism and the fact that the victim is disabled is just icing on the racism cake

Oh, they spoke to someone. The white guy at the Circle-K who was the actual suspect they had been called to trespass off the property. He told them to go look for a black guy, which they were all too happy to do.

Not surprising the victim is black.

How dare he?!

"Under scrutiny." As if there's ever a justifiable reason to punch and taser a deaf man with cerebral palsy.

They could have disabled him by holding his hands so they couldn't move. We're not talking about some roid raging bodybuilder here.

All uses of force should be under scrutiny.

Literal thugs. This is why I crack a celebratory beer every time I hear about a dead cop, one more off the streets.

[–] credo@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

This headline is terrible. I have nothing good to say about the police either.
