Summary

Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign has reignited fears among undocumented migrants with promises of “mass deportations” and migrant communities are bracing for uncertainty and a new wave of nativism.

His administration plans to target those deemed public safety or national security threats, potentially reinstating workplace raids and using military resources.

Advocates warn that “collateral arrests” could sweep up migrants without criminal records.

Many, like “Dreamers” protected under DACA, fear family separations, while others, such as Carlos in NYC, hope Trump’s economic policies might benefit them.

"A lot of Latinos, those who can vote, did so because they think he [Trump] can improve the economy. That would be very good for us too," said Carlos, an undocumented Mexican who lives in New York City.

I sincerely wish the absolute worst on any marginalized group that voted for Trump. You have nothing but my deepest sincere disgust and deserve whatever happens to you.

So long, Carlos.

Carlos can’t vote, but a majority of both Latino men and Latino women voted for Kamala.

The only majority that voted for Trump is white people.

“A lot of Latinos, those who can vote, did so because they think he [Trump] can improve the economy.”

I think you missed this part.

That’s what I was responding to. Carlos is explaining why more Latino voters voted for Trump than last election cycles. A majority of both Latino men and women voted for Harris though.

Trump was talking about the economy while Harris was busy pivoting to the right and embracing dick Cheney and her CEO’s

Harris lost more voters from this pivot than she gained from trying to cozy up to literal republicans.

Yes, I assume Trump was lying about how he will help people by fixing the economy, but at least he was lying about the issues that these voters had at the top of their list of priorities. Harris wouldn’t even lie to address any issues her base cares about.

[–] WrenFeathers@lemmy.world 2 points 36 minutes ago (1 children)

So… it’s better to lie?

[–] DancingBear@midwest.social 2 points 29 minutes ago* (last edited 26 minutes ago)

In my opinion? No, but I don’t think people pay as much attention to news and politics as I do.

Most people are just trying to live their lives. Like 2/3 Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. They don’t have time to read news either that or they’ve been lied to for so long they don’t give a 💩.

I’m just saying, at least Trump was talking about the number one issue these voters cared about, while Kamala was saying she couldn’t think of a single thing she would have done differently than Biden. She pivoted to the right and they kept walz in the basement playing video games. She embraced corporate ceos and dick Cheney. She wouldn’t even lie to us about ending the genocide.

I was willing to vote for Harris if she even lied about ending support for Israel and the genocide, but she wouldn’t even do that.

Thankfully I live in a blue state and I was able to avoid having to vote for her. I would have if there were any chance she would have lost my state.

"We want our polticans to be honest!"

Democrats: "fine... but you wont like the truth"

[–] DancingBear@midwest.social 1 points 24 minutes ago* (last edited 17 minutes ago)

I do think democrats and the left in general do hold their reps to a higher standard. It’s a good thing….. but lol

Edit: this is funny because Harris was actually being 1000% more honest by embracing dick Cheney and the corporate ceos and Israel.

Edit: 100,000

[–] samokosik@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Let’s blame it on white people!!!

[–] DancingBear@midwest.social 2 points 44 minutes ago* (last edited 43 minutes ago) (1 children)

Lol

I say blame it on the DNC and Harris herself.

But sure why not. More accurate than blaming latino and or black or Muslim citizens

[–] YtA4QCam2A9j7EfTgHrH@infosec.pub 3 points 21 minutes ago (1 children)

Biden also gets loads of blame for being an egotistical piece of shit and not dropping out in time for a primary.

[–] DancingBear@midwest.social 1 points 4 minutes ago* (last edited 1 minute ago)

Is that Biden’s fault or the DNC? Is he de facto leader of the DNC as president.

Even a fake primary would have been better than what they did.

I was hoping to see the Hippy and Cornell West debate Biden. Would have been great.

Edit: Maryanne Williamson or something her name the hippy I mean

As someone posted in another thread, the mass deportations of Mexicans in the late 1920s/early 1930s ended up deporting American born Mexicans as well. So yeah, America deported actual American citizens because they didn't care or couldn't be bothered to check papers or whatever. Who's to say that isn't going to happen this time around?

Also, Trump said Latinos have a "murder gene," so he already thinks they're all criminals of some sort.

[–] YtA4QCam2A9j7EfTgHrH@infosec.pub 1 points 17 minutes ago* (last edited 17 minutes ago)

This happened in operation wetback under the Eisenhower admin. So it happened after wwii as well.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 12 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

They will grab anyone they can get their hands on. Criminals will have the advantage that they know how to hide, and there are way more non-criminals, so Jose Average will be picked first, being the easiest target to fulfill the quota.

[–] nomous@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Also while some peoples definition of criminal is "murderer" or similar some peoples definition is closer to "you did or a relative did something not 100% legal in the last generation or two.

edit: some peoples definition of criminal will definitely include unhoused or non-land owning eventually

[–] takeda@lemmy.world 13 points 3 hours ago

Aren't criminals already being deported if they are caught? He was clear that he is after immigrants (in some speeches illegal, but in some even legal)

[–] islands@lemmy.cafe 36 points 4 hours ago

How can anyone listen to Trump's racist rants about shit hole countries and walk away thinking "he doesn't mean me"? He absolutely means you. There's about to be a whole lot of faces meeting some very hungry leopards.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 29 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

What part of "mass deportations" do people not understand? Trump told us what he's going to do. His cabinet pick told us what he's going to do. They're going to do it.

[–] frunch@lemmy.world 9 points 3 hours ago

The trump admin couldn't be bothered to keep the children and parents together while caging immigrants last time--why would anyone expect him to differentiate the legals from the illegals?

[–] plz1@lemmy.world 45 points 6 hours ago

They made "migrating" a crime, so, yeah, leopards...face...

[–] MyOpinion@lemm.ee 17 points 6 hours ago

Very foolish people. Get ready to find a new home.

[–] BaalInvoker@lemmy.eco.br 146 points 9 hours ago

Smokers hope cancer reaches only 'bad people'

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 30 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Ummmmm Conservatives already see them as criminals because they are here "illegal". By default all undocumented migrants are criminals.

[–] Wrench@lemmy.world 11 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (8 children)

Trump also said he'd aggressively deport and sort through the mistakes later. He's going to deport legal immigrants too, and I very much doubt they'll let them back in without an extensive legal battle. Which will never move forward because he'll intentionally starve the court system (like congress already did at his order) so that realistically, they will never get through the system.

Great fucking job giving Nazis free reign, you stupid, stupid, evil fuckers. You had a choice to fight nazis when it was easy. Just a vote. But you chose nazis, one way or another.

My face is too good looking to be eaten by the face eating leopards!

[–] HelixDab2@lemm.ee 99 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Anyone that thinks that it's going to be only 'criminals' that get deported forget that crossing the border without documentation is a crime. Yeah, it's a misdemeanor, but it's still a crime, and the Trump administration is still going to deport them when they can.

[–] PhilipTheBucket@ponder.cat 66 points 9 hours ago (6 children)

Adjudicating whether or not someone is guilty of a crime, or in the US illegally, requires a trial. Doing that for millions of people all of a sudden within a system that’s already backed up by more than a year is completely impossible.

In other words, they are absolutely talking about deporting innocent people of the wrong ethnicity without any attempt at due process, and anyone who thinks different is living in a dream world. And then, once they’re done with that batch, they plan to move on to other classes of undesirables.

I'm worried they're going to start raiding schools and daycares as well in order to force parents to turn themselves in or just to be malicious. A lot of children are going to be separated from their parents.

[–] Eldritch@lemmy.world 19 points 7 hours ago

That would be right in line with their normal behavior. Seeing how many children they kidnapped in the previous Trump administration.

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 66 points 9 hours ago (12 children)

you all understand this is about racism, right? this is a giant dog whistle for rounding up non-white people and getting them the fuck out of their white nationalist dream.

its not about crime, or which immigrants are good or bad. its about kicking out the brown peoples. its easy to manipulate racist voters. they are all ignorant cowards.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 33 points 8 hours ago (3 children)

All those Muslim folks who voted for Trump to "punish" Harris are in for a rude awakening. This isn't only about Hispanics.
