i like this. To really make an impact, we need to start getting tech/corporate unions established & involved ASAP. This will really speed things up since everything in corporate is banking on everyone being as efficient as possible all the time.

Get people from the new/booming industries involved. Think AI & data centers- the engineers, manufacturers, distributors, construction workers, if any one part of this line i gone for even a week, so much gets thrown off. If you get multiple players to pause, nobody else can do anything.

[–] Cool_Name@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago

Great point. If you know anyone in relevant fields, talk to them. Much of this will need to be done by word of mouth because you know the algorithms on the big sites are not going to like this.

Ah, an American 2028 general strike.

That'll be why I've not heard about it. I wish them the best of luck, their country faces many issues that a general strike could begin to fix, here's hoping.

Won't they still have their fascist, self proclaimed dictator in power in 2028? He'll send his jackboots out to crush any such attempts at organising against his precious oligarchy.

Hopefully those participating are ready for a bloody struggle for their rights.

Laughs in occupy Wall Street under obama

It might actually be good to get an over reaction from trump. If he perceived it as a threat the amount of media around it will ensure widespread awareness.

You'd be surprised what MAGA will do when talking about government protest.

[–] Wogi@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

A general strike is difficult to crush. You can crush a strike here and there. You can crush several at once.

You cannot crush a strike of millions of people all over the country.

That's the whole point.

Literally the first paragraph of the article

All three contracts that emerged are slated to expire on the same day: May 1, 2028, International Workers’ Day. This is not the first time the UAW has aligned the Big Three contracts, but what the union did next is remarkable. It put out a challenge to the US labor movement: “We invite unions around the country to align your contract expirations with our own so that together we can begin to flex our collective muscles,”

More than just unions, people need to walk out. They can't fire all of you in one day.

Four years is a great amount of time to plan for it and get people on board. You gotta start talking to people about it, first!

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 31 points 1 week ago

Country fucking wide. That would be amazing.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can corporations afford to sit and wait longer than poor people can?

[–] JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes because of wealth inequality. They literally have hoards of money that can be used in a case like this.

The wealth didn't just disappear during the Great Depression and "nobody had any money". Boeing, Chrysler, Kennedy, Rockefeller, grocery stores like publix all doubled, tripled, quadrupled, 10x'ed their wealth. It was a big wealth transfer, not that everyone was poor.

It was literally mostly the working class and some of the lower-owning-class that suffered.

It was solved mainly by taxing the ever loving shit out of oligarchs and redistrubing the wealth back to the people.

[–] kautau@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah that’s the reason that so many people can’t afford to be super selective when applying for jobs, and will take the first offer they get, but corporations will sift through thousands of people to get to who they perceive to be the perfect candidate, they’re sitting on liquid assets and credit lines. They’re not desperate

~~Four years is great timing if a liberal Dem wins the presidency four years from now on a Trump rebound. Labor can go out of their way to make their ally look bad.~~

They really need a clear set of demands for this - like a minimum wage demand, or Medicare for all.

[–] 9tr6gyp3@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

2028 election is in November. This general strike will be on May 1st.

[–] GrumpyDuckling@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Union members are now the least socialist people around. Bunch of ignorant assholes.

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Huge difference between a teacher's union and a cop union. You shouldn't make blanket statements like this about labor - they aren't correct and actually make you look like what you're accusing them of being here.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

It really depends on the union, and the people. They do tend to be blue-collar workers, though, which are often more susceptible to the kind of disinformation and propaganda against the working class they're a part of.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I stand corrected!

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Man, I hope it happens.

We saw with COVID what a single shitty week can do to the rich and capitalists.

[–] Cool_Name@lemm.ee 32 points 1 week ago (1 children)

To coordinate. This is being organized by large labor unions not tumblr leftists. They are trying to align as many union contracts as possible to expire on March 31st 2028. This also gives people time to organize their workplaces if they aren't already unionized. People can also take time to prepare strike funds. It is hard to save in this economy but if you can save $50/month for the next 3 years you'll have something to coast on during the strike.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 11 points 1 week ago

Yeah the contracts lining up is actually a good time. To bad it isn't a little sooner.
Im all for it.

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 27 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Because a general strike of this magnitude requires as much planning as possible and an astronomical amount of resources.

People still need to eat. Capital will react harshly. There hasn't been a general strike in the US in living memory, let alone of this magnitude.

You can't just throw down the gauntlet against power itself and hope for the best. It takes years of preparation and even then the chance of failure is high.

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works -4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What is the point of the general strike? Presumably each union and non-union-but-cooperating-workforce will have different goals.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A general strike is meant to force the ruling elite as a whole, not just one or two employers, to capitulate to the organizers' demands. It twists the government's arm in the same way a normal strike twists the arm of the employer.

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I get that part, but what are the demands? It seems odd to me to plan a strike before identifying the reason for the strike.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't know, but hey this is corporate America so it's not like they'll be wanting for things to demand.

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago
[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee -4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I can understand a year or so to prepare. But four years is far too long. Im assuming its for the next prez election.

That's too long. Do it sooner.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's about getting various union contracts so that corpos will have less ability to divide and conquer.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 0 points 1 week ago

I was told about it hours before that last person chimed in. Thanks anyways.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 39 points 1 week ago (1 children)

...bruh we'll have gone extinct by then.

[–] Cool_Name@lemm.ee 19 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Not really. Things aren't going to get better by then, and the US government will absolutely keep killing people. But most of us alive now will still be slogging along in 4 years.

[–] kautau@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Yeah if everyone is dead line can’t go up

[–] inv3r5ion@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You’re making some big assumptions about climate change and bird flu there bud

[–] earphone843@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Climate change isn't going to kill hundreds of millions of people in the next 4 years.

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

I know you think that prediction feels safe...

[–] inv3r5ion@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You clearly don’t understand exponential effects.

[–] earphone843@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There's nothing about climate change that's exponential. Things are going to get worse, sure, but it's not going to be some sort of Armageddon scenario.

[–] inv3r5ion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 week ago

It’s not Venus by Tuesday but all it takes is a few breadbasket failures, a few lost cities to catastrophe - LA anyone? Or aculpulco Mexico getting hit by a cat 5 hurricane that was a cat 1 12 hrs before? Not to downplay aculpucos suffering but what if that hit a major economic center? and society as we know it will start falling like dominoes. All it takes is a few cascading failures and we’re fucked.

There’s so many unforeseen things that can happen. People just think “oh the ocean will rise a little”. No, towns are going to be lost one by one by climate catastrophes until we can no longer rebuild and people are left to fend for themselves. Imagine a wet bulb event in India? How many millions would die? We’re getting closer and closer every year. Humans can’t exist outside certain conditions.

You’re looking at collapse in real time but you’re too privileged to see it. One would think a major city burning would open peoples eyes but I guess they need to lose their own house to get the message.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago

Slogging along? More like blogging along.

Why not a general strike 2032? Or to be really safe for a while 2036? /s

[–] melisdrawing@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

I am doubtful that my union will still exist by then, but I will do whatever I can to be able to not go to work if that strike happens. A general strike in the US could give the workers a fighting chance. Right now we seem disposable, we need to show them we are indispensable.

[–] shoulderoforion@fedia.io 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

you think we're gonna make it as a cohesive force until 28? i think you're mistaken. death and destruction are imminent. this is not hyperbole.

[–] rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I'm not even buying green bananas at this point.
