I would say affordable is $10,000. $20k+ I’ll have to actually think about.
Watches
A community for watch & horology discussion.
I haven't spent more than 570$ on a watch yet, but I'm considering to drop around 850 on my next one. So I guess that's currently my ceiling, that's what I consider affordable.
I like to keep it under $10,000 otherwise my financial advisor & my accountant start talking to each other
I used to want to buy all over the place at various price points, but then you end up with a bunch of watches you don't really wear. Now I want to focus on heavy hitters and buy a smaller # of pieces / year.
OP, in your range I would recommend looking at the used market. Lots of good value for great looking watches
Depends on the watch, I’m not opposed to used. Just have to make sure I am comfortable with being able to verify authenticity and originality.
Majority of what I have are sub 1K.
I can justify under 1k pretty easily.
I’m getting really nervous saving up for a $890 watch. Worried that I won’t be able to pull the trigger when the time comes.
Well, i only want an AP RO jumbo now but not pay for the grey market premium so...
I’m comfortable with $500 and under generally. Although there’s two pieces I’m saving up for that are way beyond that, but those two would be the crown jewels of my watch box.
Min 1k max 5k given my current financial situation
Nice situation
I keep it under 2k. Maybe when I have more disposable income that changes.
Your collection must be epic
I don’t think so, but I like it.
Which Seiko is the one in the bottom row, right in the middle ? If you don’t mind me asking. It looks amazing.
How do you like your Citizen Chronograph? I’ve been eyeing that exact model for about 6 months.
Willing to sell it for cheap lol. It’s a little too bulky for me.
Absolutely gorgeous sir
Thanks!
I’ll typically go 6-10k but I don’t buy many. I focus more on ones that I can pass down to my son someday
Very kind of you. If I have a kid, I'm definitely using him as an excuse to get better watches 😆
Average? $3k. Want to stretch to at least one watch in the $15k range before I retire though haha
May I see your collection? With that budget you can get very creative.

I have since added an older used Speedmaster as well. Besides these 4 "luxury" ones I also have a G-Shock, Timex, Citizen Eco-Drive, and Seiko Presage as my affordables.
right now with my current income i typically play in the $500 and under range. but I'm willing to save up like $1000 if it something i really want
500-1000 is kind of my limit. I am saving for a piece that I really want for $7-9k that I could probably buy now but would be very irresponsible due to family responsibilities.
Wise man. The watch will be there later.
I started my watch collection journey about 3 years ago. Started with Casio, then Seiko. My next step will be Baume et Mercier. They are underrated, and their movements are right inline with the big names. I love their vintage watches. There new stuff does not appeal to me as much as their old watches. I'm willing to pay $3-4K on one of their limited edition pieces. After Baume, I will go Panerai. The glory watch for me is a Beach Daytona.
I have to Google those! How many watches do you currently have?
I'm new to watches, so I'm spending a little more recently, trying to catch up, but currently only have 4. The average is ~$2k, but I'm considering a few purchases in the $5k-$10 range over the next year or so.
It’s not a race, no such thing as catching up
This is right. I'm also new to watches so I know the feeling. I have 2 & plenty on my list. It's very tempting to go crazy very quickly and grab them all.
But going at your own pace is definitely best for your mental & your wallet.
Whatever the rose gold options of a watch costs
5k-10k
ROFL, yeah, that “Teddy Bulbasaur” guy seems to have made a name for himself in the online world discussing watches! That said, since you’re based in Japan and new to the hobby (welcome!), I would check out what you have in the domestic market first and find reasonably priced ones that are exclusively available in your country. Look at what Casio, Seiko, and Citizen have to offer to start for under $500. At least they all pay attention to details and craftsmanship like the mainstream luxury brands do. Best of luck in the hunt, and beware of the haters on this channel who try to ruin it for the rest of us!
My most expensive watch was less than one percent of my base annual salary
It changes during your life, based on your income and your willingness to spend or not more in these luxury items.
My first watches were at a 3-digit price point, but in the meanwhile I've bought a few pieces with 4-digits (some approaching 5-digits). I don't think I will ever buy a 6-digit, but I have interesting pieces in my list with 3, 4 and 5 digits. :)
2000-10,000
I'm in Japan at the moment. I picked up a Seiko SBTH003 new for 3man and a vintage 6119-5401 for 1.4man. With the current exchange rates, both were a steal. I'm going to post pics of both this weekend once I'm back as there's a 8,000 yen Casio I'm looking for as well.
My general range though is less than $300 for a yearly buy, but I have one Seiko Sharp Edge I bought in Ginza that was 100man last year.
I also have a bunch of <$50 Casio I buy whenever I get the itch and find something I like.
My "soft grail" is a ~€5K Omega Aqua Terra. "Soft" because I like it and can afford it, but am not sure whether I want to wear it all the time and don't see the value in the watch to pay that much for it. Lately I stick to ~€300-400 smart watches, such as Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro which I wear 24/7, as they provide me with health metrics and offer useful smart features while still looking like a watch. I'm not sure that I'll go back to wearing non-smart watches any time soon, if ever.
$20-$20k The one I wear the most is $1500
Ive become a casio lover.
Should tell you everything.
My most expensive watch is 700 and was a gift from my then fiancée for our wedding. On average 250-300 is also the price point that I am comfortable with but to put things in perspective in Belgium where I live a Seiko 5 cement is 300+ new from a local shop.
I think that you need to keep in mind that many of the online sources discussing watches and may people posting here are basically looking at them as jewelry with a focus on mechanical watches. It's one of the few pieces of bling a guy is "allowed" to wear with ease and therefore people tend to splurge on them and/or show off.
I took a different approach for now with a “one and done” I contemplated having multiple watches but I ended up biting the bullet and selling my tissot prx to get a bronze BB58 which was around $6100cad with tax, at the same time I also got my dad a full sized red BB for around $5500cad for his retirement, I also picked up a beige Casio F91W (believe the beige was EU only) for a work watch which was $65cad. For people not into watches it maybe is a dumb idea to spend 6K on a watch however I plan on wearing this watch for life. One day i would maybe like to add 2 more nice watches to have 3 total but I am very content with having one nice watch and one beater. I don’t get “bored” with this bb58 by having lots of bands and straps to mess around with.
I'm in the under $2500 range and I don't have a problem buying pre-owned so that usually covers most of the stuff I like unless it's something really unique.
