Just wait until Canada returns US tariffs with potash tariffs. That should go over really well. Enjoy your dust fields.

[–] Cyclist@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

You're not thinking about tariffs correctly. Unless Canada puts a tariff on and export, which is unlikely. But, that being said, Trump's tariffs do include potash, which goes to your point. What I find interesting about all these articles, is that they never seem to be able to focus their anger at the man doing this, or the administration causing them the pain and anxiety. They're all wearing blinders.

[–] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Yes. You’re right. I have it backwards. Sorry. Let’s stop the sale of Potash instead since it can be used to make explosives and the U.S. is an untrustworthy ally at this point.

[–] Cyclist@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

I wish we could sell them fuck all.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 days ago

Let him keep FAFO on invading threats and watch trade go to 0.

I see”conservation”, clearly it’s one of those fake environmental things: dirt doesn’t need to be saved. It’s all that woke DEI nonsense getting in the way of true Americans

—- the thing is we can make up shit like this, but it really seems like some would actually follow logic like this. How did my respect for my fellow man get so low?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

I feel like, if we can convince Conservatives of anything, it's that "Conservation" is a key component as it's right there in the word!

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Those red run welfare farmers still have their cheap illegal labor. If they file for bankruptcy, the big corporate farms will buy them up. FAFO stupid red losers!

[–] itsonlygeorge@reddthat.com 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Again, this is by design. They WANT farmers to fail so they can buy the farmland for pennies on the dollar.

This is part of their plan! It is a cheap way to buy lots of property for cheap and gain further control of the food industry.

Go look at what’s been happening after the crash of 2008. Wall St. investment firms started buying foreclosured properties en mass and now owns at least 20% of low income housing. Same thing will happen here.

Privatizing farmland and driving out the private farms that can’t survive without government subsidies. All in the guise of privatization and capitalism.

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

I fully agree with your comment, the MAGAts are going to be like deer in headlights before the impact.

Trump spending freeze sticks...

?

[–] hildegarde@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

If you look at the trans healthcare ban, for an example of how long lawsuits take. The executive order was signed on January 28th. 4 days after the executive order, Pflag's lawsuit filed their lawsuit in federal court. 5 days after the EO, they submitted the motion for a temporary restraining order. It wasn't until February 13th, a full 15 days since the filing of the EO that the judge ruled on the temporary restraining order blocking the EO from being in effect. There were a total of 15 days when that illegal order was enforceable before the courts went through the process of providing the quickest possible emergency remedy.

Even when going as fast as possible, and granting emergency relief, courts take long enough to cause real damage. 15 days to cause farmers these problems even if the spending freeze does eventually get blocked.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Yeah, thanks. I just read the title initially as "trump (is) spending freeze-sticks (for) iowa farmers".

[–] Hobbes_Dent@lemmy.world 140 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

"A contract is a contract. We're hoping to get farmers the money" they're owed, Swart said.

You elected the guy who didn’t honour contacts openly. Too bad millions or billions now need to suffer because of your vision of country.

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 34 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A contract is a contract is a contract… but only between Ferengi

[–] MyTurtleSwimsUpsideDown@fedia.io 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A contract is a contract, for as long as you can enforce it.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Unironically this... It's is why libertarianism is a joke.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Having read some modern libertarian military porn, that's exactly the part they leave out.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah. Without a state apparatus that has a monopoly on violence to enforce contracts, the person with the biggest army gets what they want. And guess who would end up with the most power in that sort of situation? Billionaires.

It's a fast track back to feudalism. I've seen someone here refer to it as "Immortan Joe fantasies" and I thought that was pretty apt (Immortan Joe is the villain in Mad Max: Fury Road).

[–] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It's surprising how many people still operate on the concept of temporarily embarrassed millionaires ($100 million dollars in current value). This is not the vast majority of us, and never will be. It's like when my dad would talk about the "death tax" which is pretty much a thing...if you have over $10 million in your estate and a whole bunch of other caveats. He never had that before he died, and I didn't look into the details of the inheritance tax before he died, either.

Canada's current version of the death tax is the capital gains tax change...which is something like an additional $13k if your income is over $300k of capital gains. And people respond with, "But what if I sell my house?" If your house is your primary residence (and you owned it for at least a year), it's tax free. If it isn't, it only matters if it appreciated by $300k, and again I think you can handle the extra $13k.

I can very much relate to this unfortunately (I think Trump even raised the threshold during his first administration). And no matter how many times you try to explain it, and show them sources that back you up, they just ignore it and continue to believe what they already believed. I truly do not know how we're supposed to deal with this level of brain rot.

[–] Ghyste@sh.itjust.works 94 points 1 week ago (2 children)

He fucked them the first time he was President. He's fucking them again now. They didn't learn a goddamn thing. They made their bed and now they can lie in it. Stupid fucks.

You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 50 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I will never understand how an Iowa farmer could have been okay with him. They literally depend on (usually illegal) migrant work. They can't afford to pay minimum wage, but here they are, once again.

[–] TehWorld@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I’m less sure about the migrant worker in Iowa’s case. I think Iowa is mostly corn and soy, which have been machine-picked-and-processed for close to 100 years now. I’m sure that some migrant labor is being used, but one automated combine can pick A LOT of corn in a day.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)
[–] TehWorld@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

TIL (I’m clearly not a farmer).

[–] Ghyste@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

You both are right overall, so yay for everyone learning.

[–] maplehill@lemm.ee 38 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't live in Iowa but have a small farm and live surrounded by farmers and ranchers. You have to understand that these people have the tiniest of perspective to the world. They spend almost their entire lives on one property, rarely go anywhere due to the nature of farming, and constantly have right-wing radio on in the truck and the barn and fox news on at home. You combine that with limited education across multiple generations and you have a group of people perfectly suited to consistently buy into propaganda and almost never able to identify things that will eat their face in the end.

Oh I know, I grew up there surrounded by them. You're right, that's exactly how it happened, but I don't let them off the hook for it

[–] Tronn4@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

TIL Iowa farmers love to be fucked

[–] sundrei@lemmy.sdf.org 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

[–] Nualkris@lemm.ee 13 points 1 week ago

I hope you have the day you voted for.

[–] leadore@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

They'll probably toss them a bone at some point to shut them up, like they did with farmers in his first term after his previous tariffs fucked them over.
