Summary

Within hours of Maine Gov. Janet Mills publicly defying Donald Trump’s ban on transgender athletes in women’s sports, the U.S. Education Department launched a Title IX compliance probe targeting Maine’s transgender-inclusive policies.

Trump threatened to withhold federal funding if Maine did not comply. Mills firmly responded, “We’ll see you in court.”

She condemned the investigation as political retaliation and an unconstitutional use of federal power.

Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey vowed to fight back.

LGBTQ+ advocates praised Mills for standing up for students, saying Trump’s bullying would be legally challenged.

✖️ canada the 51st state

✅ maine the 11th province

Somone, can't remember who, once complained about weaponization of government. If I can only remember, cause I think it's relevant somehow.

I know it goes without saying, but can you imagine if Biden or Obama literally went on national television and declared to a United States governor "I am the law!" like he's a dollar-store Judge Dredd?

[–] match@pawb.social 1 points 7 hours ago

maybe it would've made the trumpists like biden

[–] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 17 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

OK, so what can we do to support Mills and Maine?

[–] kerrigan778@lemmy.world 7 points 9 hours ago

The best thing you can do is to push your state and governor do the same if there's any chance.

No taxation without representation

Why be part of the US if it doesn't represent your interests and if there's a dictator in power?

[–] Corngood@lemmy.ml 23 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

How Canadian are you feeling, Maine? Maybe it's time for a referendum.

[–] r4venw@sh.itjust.works 9 points 9 hours ago

Look, if you had one shot, one opportunity

To seize everything you ever wanted?

one moment

Would you capture it or just let it slip?

“Well—I’m—we are the federal law. You better do it because otherwise, you’re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don’t.”

This sentence. First, almost "I'm the federal law," followed by just a completely wonky sentence. What a technically human being

I would fucking love for the Feds to try this with any blue state that is a net contributor (which is like, basically all of them). And then set up a (federally illegal, but we don’t care about that anymore apparently) interstate commerce and trade pact between blue states for mutual aid and economic assistance, since the federal government is currently busy destroying the federal government.

[–] baldingpudenda@lemmy.world 22 points 13 hours ago

I would have also added, "What federal funding? You're stealing it all to pay for the handouts to the rich that think you're a fool."

Party of small government, right? Party of states rights, right? Sounds to me they are the party of dictatorship, tyranny and oppression.

[–] Placebonickname@lemmy.world 25 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

And 19 year olds who help run doge!

[–] ryegye24@midwest.social 8 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

If we have free and fair elections in 2026 I'm looking forward to seeing these little shits dragged in front of Congress and grilled.

[–] JuxtaposedJaguar@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 hours ago

As stupid as I think they are, I also feel sorry for them; they don’t realize they’re being used as pawns and will be hung out to dry as soon as it suites Musk and Trump.

The reason they’re so young and inexperienced is that everyone else realized the implications and refused for their own well-being. The fact that none of the DOGE leadership wants to be officially “in-charge” is a giant red flag.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago

Can they be charged and imprisoned while they await trial?

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Never happen they'll all be pardoned.

[–] JuxtaposedJaguar@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 hours ago

Not if literally anyone other than a Republican is elected.

Who's weaponizing agencies now, you projecting, pants-shitting little bitch?

AND it's the department you were going to kill? Jesus Christ who the fuck is writing this timeline‽

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

[–] tomenzgg@midwest.social 1 points 1 hour ago

This rewrote my brain, first time I heard it.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 52 points 17 hours ago

he absolutely was bullying her.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 38 points 18 hours ago
