great story, some incredible experiences
- they transferred from JuCo and walked onto a D1 basketball team (CSU Northridge) and ended up getting a full athletic scholarship
- "When they graduated, their father was refereeing high school basketball games in east L.A. for about 50 bucks a game, and suggested they give it a try. Flores remembers telling him, “Hell no, I'm not wearing that zebra stripe.” But they didn’t want to go back to waiting tables at the Cheesecake Factory, which they’d done between college seasons. Their first assignments, in the early aughts, were high school games in San Gabriel."
- that same summer, they get invited to join a referee bootcamp: “We would come in and then every referee would assess every other referee, and we would all decide collectively who would move on and who would literally get voted off the island,” Flores says. “It was like Survivor with referees.”
- Billy Kennedy, the veteran NBA ref, is at the camp and notices Flores, who then goes onto work NCAA, WNBA, and G League games.
- by 2020 they ref the championship games for all 3 leagues, and eventually Monty McCutchen hires them to his NBA ref roster.

Seeing a lot of “nobody cares” in this thread which tells me that a lot of you don’t have any trans or queer friends. Representation absolutely matters and I will feel extremely proud until this blind motherfucker costs the Knicks a game.

I think (some/many) people mean well when they say they don't care, but I think that's a disappointing response. Saying you don't care when a marginalized group finally gets representation within an industry means you didn't care that they were not previously welcome in that industry. "Firsts" matter because they are the end of "nevers."

There was no formal ban or anything on trans referees and the first female ref was in 1997. I dont think there was anything stopping trans individuals from becoming referees. There is no gender limit or anything.
This just seems like a needless celebration of identity politics. I dont care what the gender of my ref is. Or the race. Or the religions. Just that they get the calls right.

I know them from a game almost exactly a year ago where we played the Bulls. The game was horrible, weak foul calls, several bad goaltending calls, Mazzulla and Grant got ejected, and Tatum got a tech for waving them off. I’m all for representation but please get better at your fucking job

How can someone be both trans and non-binary? I thought trans was literally identifying as the other of the binary gender than one's birth sex while non-binary means rejecting the binary concept as a whole...

That's good for them. The sports world is very bigoted, it's tough for non males to make it big, and when they do they get ridiculed, especially when it comes to basketball.

Who the fuck cares. Why are refs getting articles on them? After they are retired, sure, who cares...but being an active ref and seeking attention is awful optics. Just be an unbiased, consistent ref, being great isn't even a qualifier, just good enough, but consistent that's literally it. So, shut up, and do your job. Thanks
