I wanted to be fair, so I just revisited ESPN's Top 50.
Honestly, no room for him there. Every single player there is currently more valuable than Westbrook is (in the eyes of coaches, scouts, and front office personnel).
Top 75 makes sense for him. *Shrugs*.
For sure top 25 player if the top 100 guys all died
Russ is a bench contributor in extremely limited contexts. I’m not convinced that one of those contexts is a title contender.
Weird. Teams don't usually go from the lottery to the wcf by dropping a top 25 player. Something isn't adding up here

If he was top 25, the Clippers wouldn't have gotten him for the chump change he's making.
That said, I do believe he's got a quality argument for top 50 and it's the biggest bargain contract in the NBA right now.
The 3rd best player on most teams is not in the top 50, just based on math. You cannot seriously believe Russ is a Top 50 player.
There are 30 teams in the NBA. Being top 50 means you're either the 2nd best man in playoff-tier team or a tank commander on a bad team. Russ won't even be the best player on Spurs(who just got no. 1 pick), I guess you can argue of being in competition in Portland, but even Blazers would rather treat Scoot as true no. 1 over Russ. That's 2 of the worst team last season, and Russ can't even be no. 1 in there. So something like top 100 is where Russ currently resides, which seems fair.

Russ is Top 25 player - easy
If you genuinely believe this in October of 2023, you don't watch basketball.
A lot of nba players don’t watch basketball when they are not playing
They play every team lol. Court side view of every player in the league.
They don’t need to watch random games on TV to rate players.
Playing and even watching film is different than watching the games.

Current Westbrook somehow has a low floor and low ceiling lol
Paul being nice with his friend. It’s okay.
People are underrating the likelihood of toxicity if Westbrook sucks and the team benches him. Clippers' fans will say it's not a problem because they can just cut him, but George will likely be pissed.
He’s obviously not top 25 but is he really 93? Seems like a lot of commenters are missing the point in this thread

Where is Westbrook ranked in terms of salary? He’s not valued and his game is probably not conducive to winning come the postseason.
Hate to say it but I agree with Podcast P. Russ is def a top 25 PG in the league right now.

Somebody post that Stephen A Smith Lamar Odom clip. I get gassing up your teammates to instill confidence in them, but come the fuck on. Not even saying Westbrook hasn't been nice in his career. He clearly has been, there's no question about that. But the Westbrook that averaged a triple-double, won MVP, was an absolute menace on the fast break, that Westbrook is not the Westbrook of today.

Russ signed a 2yr/$8M this offseason. Maybe he could’ve gotten more on another team, but idk it wasn’t like he had a lot of suiters. PG is just dapping up his teammate, all good, but ESPN ranking him 70th is honestly probably even higher than the general consensus in NBA front offices.

for reference cp3 who's 20 positions ahead of russ in that list averaged 12.4 pts 5reb 7.4ast 1.7stl 0.7blk on 1tov playing 35.7mpg with 5 of the 7 games being against an inferior team and that's without counting he's injury prone and can never actually complete a postseason run unlike russ

CP3 is a better player, we all know this. You’re using Westbrooks shooting splits, which are terrible but also the defense is applauding having him shoot instead of Kawhi/PG/Reaves/Lebron/AD. Like that’s the whole damn point
95 of the top 100 players could score 23 on 50% TS. Nobody wants that
I don’t want someone to score 24 points on 50% true shooting. That means they have 24 scoring attempts per game and are a bad shooter

He was def misranked. Those ranks are stupid as fuck. I’m not a Russ fan but they put hella dudes in front of him that don’t deserve it. Also, putting rookies in these rankings is dumb. We can only guess what they’ll be lookin like this season. How many first pick busts have we seen? We’ve also seen some late first rounders that were legit

Russ was among the best of the best. Probably top 5ish/7ish and maybe better for a long while.
When OKC was winning 3-1 against the Warriors, Russ looked like the best player in the world alongside Bron (Steph, KD and Klay were playing in the same games).
From about 2014 to 2017 or so, the only players on the same tier (after Bron) would probably have been Steph, CP3, Harden, KD and maybe Kawhi… And not all of them would be peaking at the same time.
Russ was really really good.
Top 50-60 for sure. Not trying to hate on Russ it’s just he has regressed and the league is very talented atm
