A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

Hey I've just finished my last year in photography in highschool. I enjoy taking photos and stuff and was wondering places where people share there photos (maybe even how one would go about starting a way to sell photos and the different options) other than the obvious stuff like Instagram and the like?

What a novel question that definitely hasn't been asked to death on this sub!

I'm sorry for the sarc, but please, for the love of all that is holy, use the search function.

I understand I did try scrolling through the sub first but clearly it's been a bit since anyone's asked it cause I didn't come across anything. It's also just that I find even when it's the same answer feeling like it's being told to me specifically makes it easier to remember. But ye srry man

I realise re-reading this it comes off more as me arguing against it rather than it apology for the over asked question so I'll just reiterate "srry man"

Your own website. If you want to sell photos... well you probably won't. If you want to offer your services start with a portfolio and get your name out there. Sadly the best way is social media

Use the obvious stuff. If the goal of sharing is people seeing your photos, the more obvious the better I figure..

As for selling, think of what anyone you know might actually buy. The only photos anyone I know has actually bought are photos of their children or themselves during their wedding.

Even with famous or professional photographers, normal people don't buy their photos directly, companies do. We buy stuff that happens to have their photo on it or were advertised with those photos. Try taking photos for a local diner's menu or call local website developers and see if they need a photograher to take photos of their client's business for a website?

I wish you would've asked this earlier so people could tell you NOT to study photography and instead study something business or marketing related, which would've been a hundred times more useful to get into the photography scene.

That degree will be worthless. So I hope you at least learned the basics (and more) of photography and camera's. And perhaps you should've already learned that you cannot just 'sell photos'.

Selling photos (as in stock photos, prints, etc.) is absolutely impossible these days. If you want to make money with photography you need to focus on commissioned work. You need to get hired by people or companies. If you want to make GOOD money with photography you need to focus on certain subjects only becuase the others are extremely saturated and you'll have a hard time making any money with those.
