A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

I’ve got a 2016 MacBook Pro that I barely use as I’m pretty much do everything on my iPad now, it feels like it’s wasted on me. I’m looking to sell and get a basic laptop just for backing up files to drives and online. Does anyone have any recommendations or kit to avoid?

I would honestly keep the laptop you have and use it.

You would probably need to spend at least 300-500usd to get even a basic laptop thats okay for your usecase. Thats essentially the value of the laptop you already own. Id use it until it breaks and buy another model macbook used thats around the same value.

A 7 year old macbook pro is a basic laptop. How much money are you hoping to save here? If it works, I would just keep using it.

For basic file backup, consider a budget-friendly laptop like a Chromebook or a lower-end Windows laptop, which should serve your purpose without buying high budget laptop . Brands like Acer, ASUS, and Lenovo offer affordable options. Look for at least 4GB of RAM and a sufficient amount of storage.

A Chromebook would only be useful if they were backing up onto google drive.
