Let’s hear it! Give me your most unpopular opinions so far this season. I know this sub can be a hive mind echo chamber sometimes where people all arrive at certain assumptions and conclusions based on small sample sizes or bias’.

Here’s a few of my unpopular (to this sub) takes:

  1. RBs aren’t a “luxury” pick in the first round of the draft, you just have to accept that the pick won’t be as “long term” as other positions. Drafting guys like CMC, Travis ETN, Bijan, etc. aren’t “wastes” or “luxuries”. Those guys can really aid an offense, especially in the current era where we’re coming back around to ground attacks. The big issue is the second contract, but you’ll still have a stud weapon on the cheap for 4-5 years. More specially, I don’t see anything wrong with the Gibbs pick. People think he’s a bust or a waste bc he hasn’t been a 20-25 touch guy 6 games into his career… I think he can be a huge contributor for them for 4 seasons or so. If he helps them in big playoff games, then the pick is worth it, even if he’s not a guy who’s around for 6-10 seasons.

  2. A QBs ability to process info and remained poised is far more important than athletic ability. Everyone is looking for the shiny athlete like Josh Allen or Lamar, but honestly guys like Brock Purdy, Kirk, Goff, etc. are way more attainable and way safer. They can process info and deliver accurate passes. Obviously the gold standard is a freak athlete who’s an elite processor, but I think some teams try to find the athletes first then try to teach the mental aspect. While it’s true that you can’t teach athletic ability like Fields has, or the arm talent Wilson has, it’s not so easy to teach the mental component either.

What’re your guys’ hot takes and unpopular opinions?

Running backs should never be drafted in round 1. Ever

[–] blacklite911@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think your second take is not even a correct assessment on how they draft QBs. Athleticism is still seen as a luxury. It’s just happens to be recently that we’ve had a couple more athletic QBs that were able to make the jump. And it’s much easier said than done to evaluate how well a QB can make the mental adjustment to the NFL.

We should all be boycotting until the NFL actually improves their officiating. There’s no excuse for what we see every weekend.

Thankfully I started boycotting two weeks ago so I didn’t have to see the Rams get shafted the way they did this week. I would have blown all of my gaskets.

If an offense takes a 10 yard penalty inside their own 20, it should still be a 10 yard penalty. The ball is moved back half the distance to the goal, and rest of the yardage is added to where they have to go Ex, 1st and 10 at the 12, need to get to the 22 - 10 yard holding penalty, now it’s 1st and 20 at the 6, and they now need to get to the 26.

There are certain powers that be that would prefer certain teams in the Super Bowl. These teams will get favorable calls. This is just how it is.

[–] PerformanceWarm4175@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Receiving backs are worse for winning Super Bowls and playoff games than power backs

[–] ValentineMichael@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Probably only unpopular on here, but I don’t think it’s hypocritical for the NFL to crack down in its own players gambling while promoting gambling to the fans.

Not sure if unpopular but there are just too many rules. Stupid ones like ineligible man downfield. So the olinemen went 1 yard past LOS before a ball was thrown, who gives a fuck? Illegal shift or motion are stupid as well and just slow the game down.

There shouldn't be any automatic first down penalties. If the penalty yards are enough to go past a first down then the team gets first down. A 3rd and 29 defensive holding should not be an automatic 1st down especially how judgmental these types of calls are in the first place. To add to this, I hate the half the distance to the goal rules. If defense commits a penalty where the yards would end up in the endzone, put it on the 1. If an offense commits a penalty where the yards would put them back in the endzone, put it at the 1 and then add the extra yards to the first down marker (if you get off. holding on 5 yard line, go back 4 yards to the 1 and add the other 6 to the first down marker).

The nfl needs a sky judge so every flag thrown the ref that throws the flag uses his mic to call the judge to immediately look at the offending player/play and decide if its worthy of a penalty. It's impossible for refs to be perfect watching 22 guys going full speed, throw the flag and let a replay official determine if it's a good call or not.

Brady is not the GOAT...

[–] Chooob210@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don’t know if this is unpopular, I just don’t hear people saying it; the jet sweep is a rushing td. Idc if the ball is flipped into the air, it’s a run play. That shit annoys me to no end.

[–] Strangeflex911@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Refs should be fined for missing or making bad calls.

[–] ZectarTV@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Game Manager QB's are vastly underrated in today's NFL.

[–] ImRightShutUp1@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

NFL cares way too much about college pedigree. Just bc a player wore the same color jersey in college and played the same position as a current NFL star doesn’t mean they’ll be remotely the same player.

I actually like when the division rivals do well, even in the post season. I've never understood the vitriol for one's neighbors. Obviously all bets are off during head-to-head games.

[–] Fun_Worry7959@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don't care if the Panthers or Falcons do well but not the Saints. The Saints play dirty and their fans and players constantly trash talk us.

[–] Brsijraz@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’m glad they shifted the game away from running the ball, handoffs are boring and passes are exciting. I hope rushing continues to play less of a role moving forward.

[–] Bobcat_Potential@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think football is a modern gladiator sport and should be outlawed. I still watch it though. Go birds!

[–] crashcap@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Mac Jones is a good player surrounded by bad players

[–] Simplyx69@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The points you score from a field goal should be based on the distance you kicked from. 1pt per ten yds.

[–] Dont_ban_me_bro_108@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Refs are actually really really good. Football has a huge field, is extremely fast paced, and has some of the most complicated rules in all of sports. NFL refs are elite. We saw just how elite they are when the back ups were used during the referee strike.

Popular opinion: The Helmet Catch is one of the most spectacular moments in the history of sports. Giants shouldn’t have made the playoffs, shouldn’t have won any playoff games, shouldn’t have made it to the Super Bowl. Game shouldn’t have been close enough for the play to matter. Eli shouldn’t have been able to escape the sack. Tyree shouldn’t have been able to catch it. None of what happened should have happened.

Unpopular opinion: The catch itself was impressive, but not nearly as impressive as people make it out to be. Certainly not the most impressive catch in NFL history like many claim. If it happened in an early window game in the middle of the season, it might have been #3 or #4 on Redzone’s plays of the day and forgotten a few weeks later. I know, because Rondale Moore had a comparable helmet catch a few years ago and literally the only reason I remember it is because I happen to be a Cardinals fan.

I think the whole ball should cross the plane of the end zone for it to be a touchdown.. now think how many games would be changed by this

[–] IfightpolarbearsIRL@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I agree that drafting an RB in the first round can be good. You get them for 5 years and they can be an elite all pro quality player. Gathering all pro players wins super bowls. The biggest issue is that with the cap in the NFL, a player like jahmyr and bijan are not a great value. Getting an elite DE or QB on a rookie contract can save you're team 20-50 million vs 0-7 million for an RB.

[–] 65grendel@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I believe every penalty against an offense should carry a loss of yards and a loss of down implications. Aside from off-sides to on the defense, pretty much every penalty against the defense is an automatic first down. The only penalty against an offense that carries a loss of down is intentional grounding. It is ridiculous that on 2nd and 10 a defensive hold is 5 yards and a 1st down where as the offense gets 10 yards and a redo on the down. If it were fair it should be 3rd and 20 on the offense.

[–] hammerSmashedNail@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Pass interference as a spot foul + automatic first down but only for the defense is stupid. If it’s a 30 yard offensive pass interference the offense should move back 30 yards. Or the play should be capped at 10 yard penalty. If the offense happens before the first down marker it’s not a first down.

Why is fumbling out the back of the endzone a turnover? I think a much better if the team got the ball at the 25. Same down or first and goal at 25.

Still harsh but not draconian.

[–] PenguinBallZ@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

An unpopular opinion for here? The "I love low scoring defensive slug fests" crowd is making it up to seem enlightened. I can't remember the last "low scoring" game that wasn't boring to watch because its really just 2 offenses tripping over their own feet. Who the fuck is trying to watch a 7-3 game? Or the Rams VS Pats II. That super bowl was pretty bad.

A good "Defensive slug fest" would still have a moderate amount of scoring, because I think it shows that the offenses are at least competent, and that the defenses really are that good. Like the Seahawks vs 49ers NFCCG. That was a defensive slug fest, but still had enough scoring to make it interesting.

[–] Dogsinabathtub@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The refs are pretty good and have an impossible job.

[–] Mcfallen_5@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Idk how unpopular it really is, but I don’t see TJ Watt get nearly enough love or credit for what he does for the Steelers.

He is a game wrecking force on par with his brother and his name should be brought up among the greatest at his position, yet he somehow doesn’t even get recognition as the best defensive player in the league these days.

He probably makes plays that win games for his team more than any other player that isn’t a QB.

Rooting for your team to tank fucking sucks
