Let’s hear it! Give me your most unpopular opinions so far this season. I know this sub can be a hive mind echo chamber sometimes where people all arrive at certain assumptions and conclusions based on small sample sizes or bias’.

Here’s a few of my unpopular (to this sub) takes:

  1. RBs aren’t a “luxury” pick in the first round of the draft, you just have to accept that the pick won’t be as “long term” as other positions. Drafting guys like CMC, Travis ETN, Bijan, etc. aren’t “wastes” or “luxuries”. Those guys can really aid an offense, especially in the current era where we’re coming back around to ground attacks. The big issue is the second contract, but you’ll still have a stud weapon on the cheap for 4-5 years. More specially, I don’t see anything wrong with the Gibbs pick. People think he’s a bust or a waste bc he hasn’t been a 20-25 touch guy 6 games into his career… I think he can be a huge contributor for them for 4 seasons or so. If he helps them in big playoff games, then the pick is worth it, even if he’s not a guy who’s around for 6-10 seasons.

  2. A QBs ability to process info and remained poised is far more important than athletic ability. Everyone is looking for the shiny athlete like Josh Allen or Lamar, but honestly guys like Brock Purdy, Kirk, Goff, etc. are way more attainable and way safer. They can process info and deliver accurate passes. Obviously the gold standard is a freak athlete who’s an elite processor, but I think some teams try to find the athletes first then try to teach the mental aspect. While it’s true that you can’t teach athletic ability like Fields has, or the arm talent Wilson has, it’s not so easy to teach the mental component either.

What’re your guys’ hot takes and unpopular opinions?

90% of QB play relies on O-line.
A good QB looks like Trash behind a bad line, and a trash QB can look good behind a great line.

[–] georgesenpaii@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It’s rigged to an extent. just as all professional sports are.

Push trade deadline to week 12 or 13

[–] kzanomics@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Fumbling into the end zone and losing possession should result in the defense getting the ball as the rule currently stands.

[–] cobra872@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Cam Newton should be on a team and starting

[–] averageduder@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Rodgers and Brees are all time great quarterbacks, but they're not meaningfully comparable to Brady or Manning. There's a lot of gap between these guys.

[–] OxfordTheCat@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Peyton Manning is on a wildly successful, Bill Murray style PR campaign that he'd rather pull his own finger nails out instead of do, to deflect from his PED use and his history of sexual assault.

Manningcast is his purgatory

Mahomes only needs to win 4 mayyyybe 5 super bowls to be the GOAT.

A skyjudge and a total of two bye weeks would solve the most major issues in the NFL today.

You shouldn't need wireless devices in the helmets to run your offense.

[–] Quirky-Lawyer-3409@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (4 children)

99% of the time, pre-draft analysis is completely full of shit. Not a single person in the league or on TV has the slightest clue whether a player is going to be any good. They don't just exaggerate, they really don't know.

I like the fumble out of the endzone = touchback for the defense rule.

Let the defense keep one of the few rules that doesn't benefit the offense. And if a ball carrier wants to try and reach to make a play, it gives the defense a chance to punish them.

[–] Six_Moons@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I agree. Nobody seems to understand this rule. I ask who’s endzone is it anyway? It’s the defense’s. I like to think the out of bounds in the endzone as an extra player that recovers the fumble. But most people focus on the optics of it.

Devin Hester is not a hall of famer. He was a career special teamer because he wasn't good enough on offense or defense. Other elite returners brought value outside of special teams so they were taken off returns.

And no I'm not saying ALL special teamers don't deserve the hall. Specialists like kickers and punters obviously can't contribute in other areas.

Mine is about penalties. I don’t think you should throw a flag on something that doesn’t effect the play. So that DPI in the browns-colts game, the holding in the rams-bengals and the chiefs-eagles Super Bowl, the OPI in the Vikings-9ers, etc.

The game should be focused on the play between the players and flags should only be for egregious violations and should be dictated by the game. Moments like the helmet catch don’t happen if they just throw offsetting flags for holding and DPI. And I think we are losing moments like that to penalties and moments like that are important

The Jets get too much shit for passing on Dan Marino.

Ken O'Brien had an objectively better career than Tony Eason and Todd Blackledge, but no one really shits on the Pats or Chiefs for their picks.

[–] the_comatorium@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (5 children)

I don't give a shit about anything other than wins.

System quarterback? Don't care.

Game manager? Don't care.

Gunslinger? Don't care.

Wins. Wins are what matters.

Attributing wins and losses to one player is only applicable to 1v1 sports and maybe basketball and even then it's normally foolish to do so. You should never have the mindset with football

Also To that point, fans understate how much where you get drafted matters to player development. Players like mahomes could be a top 10 QB on any team, but he was drafted to a team that helped maximize his potential. Same with Brady, Joe Montana etc

[–] athrowawayiguesslol@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Debating which O-Linemen is better between O-Linemen that are good is pretty much useless online because 98% of people here or anywhere else doesn’t know how to judge O-Line play without using pff, unless the player is allowing defenders right by him

The impact of coaches on development is way overstated. There is so much mythical bs that gets spouted about a coach "ruining someone" or similar. You either have the aptitude to read defenses or you dont. Why dont you guys try to "develop" the shitty employees on your team at work? see how it goes

Athleticism for QBs has become a crutch for fans and even pro scouts for evaluating QBs. They are too scared to be wrong, and they know if a QB can run they'll have some sort of floor, so they pretend it matters way more than it does

[–] DTSportsNow@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I very much agree, a lot of people act like Reid and Alex Smith are big reasons Mahomes is as good as he is. But if you breakdown how he played in 2018, it matched up pretty closely to his college tape.

He was making a lot of the same type of decisions and had the same footwork and throwing mechanics. He did eventually get better footwork and smarter with his decision making, but he was basically the same exact player in 2018 as he was in college in 2016. He came right into the league and played like his college self to an MVP.

I will say that a better coach and org can help give a better opportunity to players to show their stuff, but at the end of the day these guys either have it or not. And at the end of the day, it was said once before by a former player under Reid. He doesn't like to try to "develop" players. He takes what strengths they have and does his best to help maximize them. And that's worked out pretty well for him.

I miss big hits. I know it’s about player safety and health, and it is really super important that these guys have a quality life after the game.

But I miss watching someone just get turned inside out by a blindsided hit.

Sometimes it’s just fun to see that sort of thing.

Like we need some big protective suit that weights them down and makes them slower. Then back to sweet sweet hard as you can hitting.

Sean Payton is a hall of fame QB merchant

[–] justlookingokaywyou@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Pretty sure that's a very popular opinion.

[–] quikfrozt@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I agree but I think no. 2 comes with the caveat that the ability to process info must be tethered to the ability to act on said info - otherwise you end up with a film study backup. That ability to act is both physical and mental. Some very smart QBs might know what to do but simply panic and lose all motor functions in a real game.

[–] LiquidDookie92@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (2 children)

You know how good a QB is after half a season of starts. More teams should do the Rosen/Murray approach and not care about sunk costs.

especially in the current era where we’re coming back around to ground attacks

This is patently false. The NFL would rather get rid of the RB position all together than allow it to revert to what it used to be. The NFL is an entertainment business and running is "boring".

[–] Capsize@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Wins is absolutely a QB stat over a long period. There is too much turnover of players and coaches for a player to fail in multiple situations without it being a reflection of the QBs ability.

It's not Zimmer's fault he lost the locker room. Most of the team leaders refused to get vaccinated and Zimmer saw that as not trying as hard as you can to win and called them out on it. And rightfully so. Sure he wasn't all roses and unicorns, but the idea he all of sudden turned into some evil prick when COVID hit is ridiculous.

[–] kerouac5@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I don't know how really "unpopular" it is, but the cozying up to corporate gambling will be massive problems for the NFL, for all the reasons that the owners used to point out, particularly the NFL's refusal to change officiating practices--the NFL is the only league that refuses to use any kind of technology to provide actual data to aid in making calls on the field.

  1. It's a luxury in the fact that an RB is one of the last pieces you need to make a big push. The problem is when teams draft an RB in the first when they need things at more impactful positions like CB, OL, DL, EDGE, literally anything outside ST. CMC on the Panthers looked amazing as they lost game after game. You can also trade back with those picks, get more capital, and probably still end up just fine at RB. SO many guys are day 2 picks and do great at RB. Kamara, Taylor, Henry, and Chubb are all 2nd day picks and are 4 of the top 5 highest paid RBs now. It's a lot easier to hit on an RB in later rounds than other positions.
[–] TrellevateGT@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Hell, the Chiefs trotted out a 7th round rookie and didn’t skip a beat. Sure, he’s not great. But he’s definitely serviceable.

[–] Main-Description6122@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Kevin Harlan is overrated and Joe Buck is the best play by play guy in the business.

[–] PackerBacker412@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Roger Goodell has done WAY more good than bad for the NFL. He's just a scapegoat for people to hate on.

Also, when it choice comes down to owners vs players in most league matters, owners usually care more about what's best for the game than the players because that's how they make their money. If it were up to the players, this league would be more like the garbage that's the current NBA. That doesn't mean the owners are always right (lifetime health insurance for instance should be mandatory for all NFL players past and present).

[–] ufotheater@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Particularly in the playoffs and beyond, referees are generally making a choice (or being directed) to ignore holding on pass protection, likely in order to make for higher scoring game.

Stop penalizing teams that have a good pass rush and throw the fucking flags.

[–] MakeJcQuaid@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Get rid of special teams. 4 downs of ball.
Also OT should be an offensive shootout. Just like Hockey or Soccer.
