"That's really Mahomesian of Allen there"
- NFL commentators
When he's on, he can play like the best QB in the league. But he does have a lower floor and has more duds than a guy like Mahomes.
It'll be interesting to see if as his career goes on if he can raise that floor and stop having as many duds. Could start getting some MVPs if he could do that.
That is what has killed every MVP campaign for him. He has two or three bad games a year where he is a bottom 10 qb. Mahomes doesn't have those games, even bad Mahomes games he is a top 10 qb. If Allen can put together a season where he eliminates those bad games he will for sure get at least one MVP.
The Jets games for the two are prime examples. Both QBs had some goblin brain INTs, but Pat was able to bounce back enough to win while Josh had deer in the headlights and lost in OT.
My personal take is that when Josh Allen has a great game, he is essentially the best QB that the world has ever seen. Fortunately for the rest of the league though, he doesn't have the consistency to reach those heights every week, and his lows tend to be lower than most other elite QBs.
Like Patrick Mahomes plays most games between 85%-97% on a great "Quarterbacking Scale." Josh Allen can reach 100%, but he also has more games at like 65%.
You nailed it. When Josh is on he might be the best QB ever, but he only reaches that level a handful of times per year. The highs are high and the lows are low.
Outside of the Jets game his lows this year really have been that low. He hasn't been beating as much it seems. Unfortunately everything else on this team is just steadily breaking.
Losing to the 2023 is lower than I thought I’d see
He's honestly just Ryan Fitzpatrick if he were an elite physical specimen. Stick Ryan Fitzpatrick's brain in Cam Newton's body and you get Josh Allen.
He's definitely at the 100 mark every time he plays the Chiefs.
The word you're looking for is variance.
Josh Allen can bounce anywhere between completely unbeatable and singularly responsible for creating a loss, in the same month. Other quarterbacks can't peak like he can but they also don't tend to disintegrate the same way either.
When Josh is locked in, he's virtually unstoppable. If he gets off to a shaky start, sometimes he gets in a hole and struggles to get out, or becomes desperate to put on a cape and save the game, and that sometimes backfires.
So yeah, locked in Josh is an absolute force, but nobody knows why it's not more consistent.
As a Chiefs fan, you may be surprised to hear that I feel the same way about Mahomes. When he’s on, the game is already over (unless it’s the 2022 divisional game where both Allen and Mahomes went Ultra Instinct at the same time), but if you can get him out of his laser focus state then you have a shot.
Yeah, Mahomes is scary. Never fun going up against him. With how depleted our defense is right now, I am not looking forward to this matchup.
The Bills vs The Chiefs is always a good matchup for the NFL, with how the teams go back and forth, but for the fans of the team? I don't know about you, but my blood pressure is most certainly TERRIBLE when I watch.
If I die before 60 from cardiac arrest, I’m blaming Bills/Chiefs.
That game was (and probably will be honestly) the best combined quarterback play I have ever seen in a game. Just outrageous stuff
Allen is Brett Favre 2
Honestly I think the truth is mahomes has the best offensive coach to help develop and scheme. Allen has a 2nd year OC who can’t stop running draw plays. We saw the last Daboll year Allen could sustain MVP level play all year.
Mahomes is the best in the business but I think we can all acknowledge landing in KC maximized what he could and can be.
I do think thats heavily on playcalling rather than just him, and saw execution by the team.
Just a small example, Allen still deserves a heavy portion of blame on these...but week 1 against the Jets, his 2 interceptions were aided by Gabe Davis running the shittiest low effort route I have ever seen, which telegraphed where the ball was going and the coverage help didnt get pulled away.
The other interception rookie Dalton Kincaid didnt carry his route deep enough, which was supposed to peel coverage off Diggs.
isnt that the case when any player has an awesome game?
He blacks out then crashes for a game and a half.
Josh Allen’s best is better than anybody else
That mf can make every throw, break tackles, rush for 100 yards, and dominate.
He’s not that guy all the time though.
Last night was something else. I couldn’t believe how many times he audibles out there. Just complete command of everything around him. Dudes a stud
Its funny that our best drives are when the playcalling is taken away from Dorsey...those are when we have been best.
Also last night his audible to Diggs, knowing the safety/corner was blitzing...got an immediate hot route to diggs for an 8 yard gain
Based on basic stats, Josh Allen hasn't had 2 games in a row without a turnover since he has entered the league.
this just goes to show how worthless analytics are. but congrats to the bills fans for taking home all the advanced stat wins, that's what really matters in football.
The Mahomes vs Allen AFC ship game that changed the OT rule will forever be one of the best playoff games ever
My heart has yet to recover
My family has had season tickets to the Chiefs for 42 years. My dad and I were at that game and after it ended he leaned over to me and said "that was the greatest game I've ever seen". It was truly an insane experience.
Diggs & Allen dapping up on the sideline because there was no way the game wasn’t a lock 😭
My friend got so drunk at the game his only memory of it is watching the highlights later that night
That's a shame.
That game was on my birthday :/ not the best present lol
That day was crazy in general because the game right before it was Rams/Bucs
It has to genuinely be one of the craziest slate of back to back games ever
All 4 games that weekend came down to the last second.
QBR is a better stat than PFF grading scale coz it filters out garbage time and generally puts the best QBs by the eye test at the top.
PFF has a hard-on for difficult pass completions so I understand why they have Allen at 1.
But QB convos are subjective...one QB will complete a super difficult pass to his 1st read whilst another may move off that read and hit an open second read for the same amount of yards. The 1st QB will get graded better by most analytics et the second QB went through a progression and produced the same result.
That's why this whole " Big time throw" conversation goes over my head. Yards are yards. Get the job done.
Lmao
To me Mahomes and Allen are 1a and 1b at QB right now. And the next closest is Burrow.
The thing is. I’d trade Allen having the most whatever graded games and whatever records he has for rushing TDs etc for 2 Super Bowl titles Mahomes has. And he has time and all. But he’s got to start carrying the Bills to the promised land. That’s what matters.
Josh Allen reminds me of a hyper athletic version of Brett Favre. Absolute beast who takes over games but prone to dumbass mistakes.
Regular season alien Josh Allen.
No Josh Allen thread is complete without the other side of the coin
How many dumpster fire graded games as he had, and where do they rank?
imagine giving a whoop on what PFF determines elite games. quite following this nonsense and judge for yourself.
That’s a fun way of saying he hasn’t won 2 super bowls
He’s inconsistent he’ll be unstoppable but the next game nothing special or just bad
I love to watch him play, but I am absolutely convinced he is going to die on the field someday. He terrifies me, and I don't understand how he still has two legs and a spine.
Looking forward to the day when people stop treating PFF grades as gospel lol. Unfortunately they have a faux sense of credibility which means average people who havent watched a second of tape in their lives will just blindly adopt PFFs findings
Mahomes plays the game at a different level. He often has open WR’s because of the way he moves his eyes, his head, and his shoulders, and the way he scrambles laterally long enough for someone to get open. He gets greedy and impatient at times. We saw that in 2021. The 2021 team also needed to be rebuilt and they needed to add some secondary WR’s. Hill was flashy and made big plays. He also had a lot of drops and wasn’t a reliable guy to go to in tight coverage on third down. He is shorter than 5’9 and has small hands. I am hoping that Rice develops into a prototypical #1 like AJ Brown, Justin Jefferson, Cedee Lamb, Jamar Chase, etc. Not little guys that pop the ball up in the air for easy interceptions or that can have defenders go over the top of him easily.
When Allen is on , he’s the best QB in the league easily ; the combination of arm and leg talent is insane
Thankfully for the rest of us , he’s Brett Favre reincarnate
Yeah guys like Allen get hot. But they aren’t consistent and can miss wildly. He’s not what I would call consistent or precise. He makes up for it with his legs though. I think that he can bring a SB to Buffalo but I don’t think he’s going to be dominant once his mobility wanes.
Shut up about Josh Allen! The more you praise him, the worse he plays. Also, the subreddit really don't like the Bills because of all the weird praise even though we're not that good anymore.
