I'm not judging, I'm genuinely curious whether anyone uses it. Because almost every text editor supports it yet when I use it, it's just by accident and it messes up my document

I do actually occasionally use it, sometimes it's easier than Ctrl-X Ctrl-V

I thought this was a shit post at first because same

[–] smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 week ago

Geez, no. No, no, a thousand times no.

[–] Walican132@lemmy.today 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I use it when writing emails fairly often. I get all my thoughts out and realize the order isn’t how I’d like. At that point if I’m holding the mouse, why not.

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

On the phone? Because otherwise, why not cut and paste?

[–] XPost3000@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Because you'd have to move your mouse to the new position anyways to paste, so might as well save 1 button press by just click dragging instead

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

Hmm...if it's close, I'd just use my keyboard. If it's far, I'd probably want the precision of the cursor anyway.

[–] weeeeum@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

Frequently when I'm making lists and I am reorganizing the order.

Or I'm wiritng a recipe and get the directions in the wrong order.

Sometimes I'm writing an article and I move sentences around to improve the flow of the article.

I sometimes accidentally do this and then get angry that the feature exists

[–] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

I use highlight/middle click paste a lot which I suppose is similar.

Is this using a PC? Maybe I would.

If this is from a smartphone... I wouldn't I guess... I often prefer to retype than dealing with the select text feature... It seems I get the same experience in the most recent mobile OS that I had when I used my iPod Touch 4G a lot of years ago, why does it feel that this feature hasn't even evolved? I can't be the only one that feels it is terrible to use, I prefer to use the keyboard gestures than dealing with it.

I have done it a few times although now I usually do Ctrl c and backspace

Wait until you try ctrl + z

[–] BaconIsAVeg@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

Wait until you try Vim motions.

[–] vfsh@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago

I use it at work sometimes because our help desk randomly started crashing when I pasted into it from OneNote, but dragging the text from OD into the text box works for some reason.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

I use it occasionally when reorganizing code. It's easier to just drag and drop blocks of code than to ctrl-x ctrl-v. I don't do it for anything in the middle of a line though, because it seems too easy to make a mistake.

[–] untorquer@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I have ulnar nerve damage so when i hit ctrl+c/x/v i often don't quite depress C/X or V fully without thinking about it. So i use drag text quite often.

I've only very rarely had drag text misfire unintentionally.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 4 points 1 week ago

I use it a lot.

[–] Darleys_Brew@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

No. But who talks about this kind of thing?

[–] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 4 points 1 week ago

I use it on desktop when I'm trying to rephrase something I've written to make my meaning more clear or improve the flow.

[–] strawberry@kbin.earth 3 points 1 week ago

nah

Ctrl x Ctrl v

[–] communism@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

Once in a blue moon? Not habitually though

Sometimes you can Ctrl+drag (which is copy) text to those annoying 'repeat your email' fields that won't let you paste.

Sometimes I'm too lazy to reach the keyboard

[–] ReakDuck@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

I very often mark the word or text and drag and drop it to the top of the browser, so it starts instantl a search about this.

Way faster than using many extra steps

[–] bababu@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago

adults in computer classes/training use this all. the. time. I see it everyday

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Only within a web browser, generally to drag something from a page to the search bar

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No but why did you take the spaces with it? Leave the spaces so when it moves you don’t have to add it back

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 0 points 1 week ago

A lot of times its too much trouble to fiddle with the highlighting to catch the right spaces, and then drop it in the right spot. Its easier to just grab it, drop it, then edit the spaces.

I'm not against the idea but I don't personally use this. It could be useful in certain edge case, for instance in very tricky formatting situation in a rich text editor.

One thing that is annoying is doing it by accident, especially if you don't realize it and continue editing so now you can't undo either.

Also, this feature should live update as you drag stuff around, not only once you release the button.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Not the way you did in the example, but when I want to copy text from a website that has ctrl-c blocked, I drag and drop onto a text editor.

I have used it once

I did actually, but I really appreciate the visual style of teaching computer tips and tricks, you should post more of them!

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago

Only times I have ever used it for anything has been whenever I've created an account for Perplexity* using a temp email and need the verification code but don't wanna copy or type it out.

*I only use their AI for inconsequential things that have no impact on my life and are otherwise pointless, like writing very dumb stories.

[–] wuphysics87@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

Interesting. I'll try it out!

[–] Ledivin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Maybe if I'm moving while paragraphs around? But even then I'd probably cut and paste

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Nope, when writing on a PC I avoid touching NY mouse anyway.

[–] youngalfred@lemm.ee 0 points 1 week ago

What were you trying to achieve?
You selected the spaces on either side and dragged - it did what you asked it to?

If it automatically selected the spaces on either side, I hate that - totally justifiable anger.
