May be a dumb question but how do you actually listen to music? Do you listen while doing something else? Do you set aside time to just sit and listen? Really dive deep into your routine if you have one.

I’ve recently got my first hi-fi setup- Audeze LCD-X + Munich M1 but all I do is listen while I work, so looking for inspiration.

I listen while working, studying, driving, doing chores, running errands, exercising, almost any time except for when I'm socializing. I don't really dedicate a specific timeslot to listening to music because I do it throughout the day.

Looking at your flair, how would the zero compare to the app2? Thanks

[–] No-Context5479@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I listen:

Music sessions, on the go, when reading, in the background whilst ripping some games, before I sleep and during long flights and trips

[–] iFiAudio@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I tend to listen to music whilst working, travelling, tidying/cleaning, eating, gaming (with the right game that is) even when showering!

I love having different playlists to suit my setting/mood/the task I'm doing etc.

I did notice recently when going to see Matthew Halsall live that I had listened to his newest album mainly whilst doing other things, and not just putting time to one side to sit and listen to music... like I used to a lot more than I have recently... It was nice just focusing in and listening to the songs, but in a live setting.

IEM's when going out. Headphones when I'm home. When i'm bored I always like to listen to "3d" videos like Barber Shop and Soundblaster's Demo. Watch this scene from Tron, listen to Sail by Awolnation for that arousing bass and London Grammar's Intro for the lovely vocals and violins.

For me I usually listen to music when I'm walking or traveling, something rhythmic, energetic with my IEMs. When I'm at home and just study or work on something I usually listen to bardcore with headphones. But there are times when I just listen to music or critical listening then I just close my eyes and try to feel the music and I'm not doing anything else.

Most of the songs I listen are from rhythm game(osu) so I mostly listen while playing. I found music itself to be a bit boring so I enjoy having some notes to tap along the rhythm.

[–] RR3XXYYY@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Ironically osu has pretty terrible sound quality (I’m not hating, I’ve been playing for 9 years)

[–] sketchy_ppl@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Live performances on YouTube through TV speakers while I sit on the couch and get work done on my laptop

IEM’s while I walk my dog

Headphones are set up at my bedside, either listen while working on my laptop or I’ll close the laptop and just listen to music before going to sleep.

[–] eatingdonuts44@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Mostly while browsing the internet or playing games that dont really require me to focus on ingame audio. Also while driving in the car of course.
Every now and then ill sit back or lie in bed and be immersed in music while I do nothing but relax.

[–] 3nchantingdevil@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Set-up and eq for half an hour, then listen to 2 songs get disappointed then, eq for another hour then listen to 1 song and start researching to buy next set of IEMs

[–] Knale@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And this right here is why I don't want to touch EQ lol I'd rather find headphones that naturally produce the sound I like and then leave it alone.

Munich M1

I've been happy using whatever u/oratory1990 posts as a preset for the headphones. Mainly just adjust bass to taste after that.

[–] Zapador@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It really depends. I guess my listening is done in this order:

  1. At work with headphones, obviously doing something else at the same time
  2. At home with headphones, while doing something else
  3. At home on speakers, not doing anything else but listening to the music
  4. At home on speakers, while doing things like cleaning
  5. On holiday with headphones, like on the beach or a bench somewhere, doing nothing but enjoying the music and taking in the atmosphere of the place
[–] Hexar27@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I have an ZMF Auteur OG. I pair it at home with the Eufonika H5 miflex amp and the Gustard R26 dac. I sometimes listen to music while watching shitty reality tv shows but other times I will just listen with nothing on at all.

[–] Grumpycatdoge999@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I listen to music in short spurts. Can’t really play music and do other stuff at the same time.

[–] IUm_ActuallyI@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I tend to try to listen to music on my setup while studying and then just get distracted and end up sitting there listening and dazing out for like an hour

[–] AizeeMasata@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Casual listening = At home using speaker/TWS earbuds. (depending what I do at the moment)

Serious listening = IEMs DAC dongle, when do nothing just enjoy the music~

On the go = TWS earbuds for convenience.

[–] PritamHalpawat@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

20 minutes a day without any distraction is my routine 😊

[–] DrakeoAndTheStincs@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Work, driving, gym, doing dishes, in the shower, seriously just about whenever I can. Keeps me sane.

[–] DJGammaRabbit@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

While washing my dishes I put my phone in a big metal bowl to reflect the sound.

I listen to music at my PC or while walking. If I'm out of the house I'm listening to music. Sometimes I'll just sit and listen.

Get IEMs so you can have it outside. I doubt you're taking your LCD outside.

[–] StealthWealth3121@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Great question! I mostly listen to music throughout the work day. Working from home office is great for that. I have my laptop or iPhone running Apple Music into my desktop DAC/Amp and can quickly swap headphones when I feel like it. I usually listen to 10-16 new albums (to my ears) a week. I'll play music over loudspeakers while socializing, cooking, or cleaning. In the evening I may turn the lights down, recline and listen to live albums. I do this less frequently since I have other interests besides music. The reason for the latter is that I enjoy feeling transported to another place and another time when listening to live performances. My Edition XS are perfect for that.

[–] physicsandbeer1@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I listen to music while doing literally anything that isn't a movie or a game that requires that i'm focused in the sound or story, but i listen a lot while reading or studying. I sometimes even make playlists per book or manga, though usually they're pretty random. I also dedicate some time to just listen to certain songs i really like, but even then i usually end up doing something else like drawing random shit or scrolling here. There's also those songs that i just have to stop everything and listen to them.

Lying, darkness, closed eyes, silence...

[–] wagninger@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My main headphone setup is close to my desk, I listen mainly when the kids are asleep and chores are done, and while I play some StarCraft II, Anno 1404 or other building type game

[–] GupDeFump@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

IEMs at the desk (through an Astell&Kern DAP employed as a DAC). But the primo pleasure is evening time with an Old Fashioned. Either through the speakers or cans depending on mood.

My problem is that my investment in hifi has coincided with or triggered a change in musical taste and I don’t know what I love now. I used to be a metal head and still am to a degree, but having high quality sound has pushed me to a mellower place and I feel quite naive to it.

I usually listen to music when I'm driving, sitting in my car, walking by myself on campus, sitting by myself in campus, doing homework, playing games, or when I'm on my computer doing absolutely nothing but switching tabs or what not

[–] Erebys22@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Always listening to music wherever and whenever possible. I just connect my headphones to my phone via BT and play youtube mp3 rips from my phone because my phone's headphone jack is faulty and I am a poser in terms of audiophiles

[–] Guitarcat2000@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I mostly listen when I'm doing something else like working.

If I'm listening at home or working from home, I mostly use my Philips SHP 9500's because they're my only pair of headphones that are comfortable (both physically and sound-wise) for long listening sessions. But since I discovered IEMs I've been using them more and more at home.

In the office or out and about I use IEMs or wireless earbuds.

[–] Uwawawawawawa@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I download maybe 10-30 albums every week or so and try to listen to all of them whenever I have the time to do so. The last one I listened to fully was Geek The Girl.

[–] Ill-Strawberry254@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I listen to music all the time. While walking, while doing other things like working or browsing the internet etc. But sometimes I just focus on the music.

[–] Kiurin@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Most of mine is done while at work, just passively

[–] Hervie@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I guess I'm in the minority. I do daily meditative listening. I set aside 30 minutes or so with headphones and seriously concentrate to the lyrics, rhythm, composition, and completely lose myself to the point of drifting off. It is relaxing to the extreme. Just sayin.

[–] Phil_D_Snutz@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Take a gummy or have some whiskey then put on your best headphones and go down musical rabbit holes on Apple Music.

[–] Fuzzy_Luck5550@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I typically listen to headphones while playing video games or working. I mute the sound for League and listen to music instead.

For IEMs, I listen while commuting or traveling.

[–] LoganM-M@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I plop on my Hi-fiman Sundaras or 7Hz Timeless, start up Do it again by Steely Dan, take a rip from my bong, lay back in my office chair by my computer or lay down/back in my bed with the pillow propped up against the wall to use as a backrest and then select the playlist or album that has the right vibe for the mood I'm in.

Am i the only one who has kind of a ritual i guess?

[–] redditronc@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I usually listen to music on Fridays, when new albums come out. I listen to a lot of Prog Rock, which often is album-focused. So I’ll normally just sit down, pour myself a drink, and enjoy some new music. I don’t really do much “casual” listening (i.e. while working or doing other things), since I work a lot with music professionally already. Great answers so far! Very interesting topic.

Music listening as much as possible

hifi music to unwind/chill, gaming, surfing the web

wireless for gym/workouts, errands, household chores, traveling

IEM's when sleeping, and to also give myself a rest from using the headphones

[–] Solypsist_27@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I mostly listen to my iems when I'm in the train going somewhere, basically anytime I take the train unless I'm with someone else. Then at home to relax when I come back from school/work or when I have free time, either iems or headphones. Sometimes in bed before sleep

[–] Salt-Dig-217@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I usually only wear headphones when playing games, because I think wearing headphones to play games can help me better enjoy the joy of the game, and better experience the game’s kill sound effects, background music, etc.

[–] shubashubamogumogu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I put my headphones on. go into the bathroom and get bottomless. sit on the edge of the bathtub and put one foot on the wall so my legs are spread eagle, then that’s when I press play on the headphones start my music and proceed to wax my butthole. yeah I have a problem with hair on my body.

[–] GeeLee80@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I typically rotate between headphones, IEMs, wired earbuds depending on how much time I have and how I’m feeling. I’m rotating between IEMs and wired earbuds most often. I have speakers, receivers, CD players, cassette players that I don’t use very frequently now. I stream music, play flac streams, FM radio streams. I have wireless earbuds & wireless headphones plus Open-Ear Bluetooth Bone Conduction Sport Headphones for walking or whenever my wife talks to me while I’m listening.

[–] Mannen96@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Turn on my amp and wait an hour for it to get warm, make a cup of coffee and start listening while browsing reddit :)
