You know, I'm somewhat of a NBA player myself.
I forgot which big man said they learned block timing from playing 2K
But gamers deadass knew the value of spacing by like NBA2K8 years before the actual league
I always want to say this but feel like I'd be mocked lol.
It is just a game so it wasn't realistic, but 5 out with heavy rotations on defense and aggressive help defense to force turnovers was always my jam in the 2000 2k days. It's just that I found it unrealistic for them to do in real life until they did it. I'm not sure it was a talent thing as much of a coaching thing that teams didn't go down this route faster.
Similarly playing 2k like Presti does.
The Magic was starting to form and they were so fun. They were like a prototype for the 3 eccentric game. Even as a Lakers fan I still would occasionally play with the Magic because drive with Jameer kick to Rashard Lewis was deadly af. Then reset it all when Dwight got the board.
I remember starting Jameer, JJ, Hedo, Rashard and Dwight it was literally drive and kick none stop
I was ahead of the curve playing with Steve Nash in Live 2003. I basically had him doing Steph Curry's career back then. He was way too good of a shooter not to just fire away.
The video game counterpart of that 02-03 Mavs team was a modern NBA dream. Dirk obviously goes without saying but Raef LaFrentz was a 3&D center and you legitimately could play 5-out with them. They had shooters everywhere on the wings too.
Those Nash Mavs teams were fun as hell to watch and I was sad as a young Canadian Nash fan when he left the Mavs (thought he was ruining his career lol).
Simulation is a helpful tool in a lot of sectors like aviation and marine, so this shouldn't be very surprising
The second part is pretty crucial. I remember the days where people complianed how hard and inefficient post ups were in Live and 2K series. Guess what, it was also inefficient in RL, just people noticed it a lot later.
Oh it's hard if your opponent knows what they are doing. Do it to someone who doesn't and as a certain doctor would say, they are barbecued chicken.
NBA Live 2004 (or 2005 I forgot) is the first one for me. Peja is deadass deadly (ofc other than Shaq just dunking every game). Kings is the best team practically mainly due to Peja +White chocolate, it's three for days. The 2nd option is to use smart trading technique to land Peja at Heat, Peja+Shaq is just deadly inside outside combo. Plus Heat should also has Rasual Butler with like 90 3pt also, sure his other stat is shit, but you really only need the 3pt stat anyway. That's your core.
Legit just shot 3’s as a kid in the mid 2000’s because for every two 3’s I made, they had to make 3 two’s

That’s pretty cool to hear. I credit my own interest in basketball stemming from NBA 2K11 distilling the game into something I can understand and appreciate.
same for me with 2k12. i still have the full end of season celtics roster from 2012 memorized because i played that game so much lol

One of the best sports tools ever is designing your own plays/animated playbooks. You can really go to a coach's playbook and watch their plays executed over n over, it's genius.

There’s some pretty cool concepts you can learn from gaming like faster decision-making and being able to get reps in and fail that surely cross over to sports, however pure athleticism not so much
I was 14 years old. Hated basketball with a passion. Knew hardly anything about it. Football & baseball was my shit. Anyway, picked up nba 2k9 (I think?) on a whim. Got home, started a my player as a point guard. Set the camera to follow my player from a 3rd person perspective & the rest is history. It taught me basically everything I know about basketball. Court vision, who to look for, what would be open… PLUS you add in the fact that the game would GRADE YOU for plays you did good/bad on. Once I stepped on to the court that freshman year, it was a wrap. Went on to play D2 basketball.

I didn’t play any form of college ball, but I took a break from basketball and started playing intermurals again and sheeesh I wish I played basketball games before so I understood better about things like spacing as a center, when to clear the lane, and what makes a good screen etc. that and I mean I also was playing power forward instead of center so I could actually shoot 3’a and not just post up and get bodied lol. Came home Christmas and was playing at the gym, and the old varsity coach saw me and asked why I didn’t play in highschool 😂. People were also adamant on me being a center… when I sucked at that play style

People really underestimate the value of video games in terms of how many reps they allow for, even if they're obviously not as high quality as a 5v5 practice. If you're really working on it, you could go through thousands of reps of the PnR in 2k- again, obviously not the same as the real thing, but definitely enough to get a better understanding of the possible configurations and spacing of variations of the play against different types of defense.
Honestly, playing NBA Live growing up probably taught me more about spacial awareness and positioning and just generally how to play the game than real life coaches did, and those games weren't even that tactically sophisticated compared to today's games.

2k actually improved my bbiq so much no joke I’m like draymond green at the YMCA I can’t do anything but know what’s going on at a really high level
I became better at rebounding because 2K taught me the importance of boxing out (gotta get that teammate grade up)
I played a lot of 2k22 play now online and at the highest few leagues it felt close to real basketball to me. Running pnr and trying to get it to the open shooter, attacking favorable matchups esp in transition, knowing how to attack hedge vs. drop vs. switch everything.
I’ve never played 2k and think it’s dumb as hell
Playing 2k18 (🤢) actually got me into basketball in the first place. I ended up learning and studying defensive schemes to get better at it. I’ve never been a good basketball player, I got into it too late, but now I do know who to get mad at on my team for fucking up on defense.
Jaren Jackson said the same thing about blocking, he learned his timing from 2K
I havent watched a Pacers game yet this season. Is he just calling non stop pick and rolls, jacking up the 3 off the pick or hitting the roller if they close out? Maybe tell the guy in the corner to cut to the basket over and over?
Not gonna lie, I played high school football, but I learned most of my zone coverage scheme knowledge from Madden
