Do teams not use the same 11 players on field goal blocks for every play?

I can understand how you get 12 players on defense because someone was confused about what package you’re running, but if you’re the 12th guy on special teams shouldn’t you stop and think “Hey, I’m not usually out here for these plays, maybe I’m an extra?”

It’s interesting that the Broncos pulled off the “fast switch FG” twice in a game. The irony here is, Buffalo got the worst case scenario:

  • while a FG block isn’t impossible, it’s quite unlikely
  • have too many men on the field
  • first FG misses, second post-penalty makes
  • game was literally win or lose, a FG miss doesn’t send you into OT tied up.

You'd think having previously executed having the right guess out there in that scenario would've helped.

[–] MacMac105@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

No, the other guy is the 12th guy.

[–] Complex_Cookie_7881@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Maybe someone was injured for the previous FG and you're in. Then this guy returns and you don't know. Lots of things could have happened. Getting 11 men on the field for teams is frigging hard, I'm telling you. With that being said, this is the NFL, and they have all the resources available and get paid big bucks. Shouldn't happen.

Had this happen to me 2 times while I still played, came in on Punt Returns for some other guy and was the odd one out since that dude returned. My coach noticed both times and got me off quick enough however lol

[–] shmoove_cwiminal@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They had 5 defensive starters out. And some other substitutions during the game. It's not as cut and dried as you think.

[–] tsgram@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Blame McDermott. He had a timeout to talk it over and get it set. It was obvious that the Broncos might do another quick change.

[–] thallusphx@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

i don't think they had a timeout to use.

[–] tsgram@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I meant that they’d had plenty of time before the penultimate play to discuss

[–] thallusphx@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yea. Realistically they shouldn’t have subbed out at all and used the same 11 players for both plays

[–] shabba_skanks@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I did it 3 Times in my freshman yr of high school. 3 games in row. We woulda won state if coach would have put me back in.

Every man on the field was the 12th man on the field.

[–] YourWifesWorkFriend@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Team makes decision for regular defense to stay on the field >>> ST coordinator changes mind and sends out the field goal blocking unit >>> this doesn’t get communicated to or gets missed by 1 guy, who incidentally hasn’t played a down of football in some time.

[–] mltrout715@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No, it isn't always the same people because of injuries. But, there is a person that will count how many people are on the field during the huddle. Since it was a rushed field goal and no huddle, they didn't count. With that said, the coaches knew what was coming, and should have had the right people ready. The Broncos did.

[–] Writerhaha@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That’s what I was wondering, things got hectic and someone lost the count.

One of my favorites back in the day (trying to find video) Antonio Pierce counting 12 and pushing one of his guys offside to get the play killed.

[–] DeadliftSchmedLift@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm trying to understand this but can you explain it? Isn't the penalty for both the same? (5 yards). Why is offsides better than too many men on field? Thanks

[–] Writerhaha@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Ah, ok found someone else explaining it and I screwed it up.

Pierce saw he only had 10 on defense (playing a man down) so he ran up and got the infraction (giving 5 to get his man on the field).

The only reason I could see for doing it with 12 on the field would be to just not risk a free play (because you’re right it’s 5 either way).

Darius Butler said on PMS that there are like 4 fg teams, base, nickel, dime were 3 that he stated. On fast change kicks the personnel is based on minimum subs to line up correctly. There was clearly a miscue on what group needed to be on the field

Probably depends how shitty your special teams coach is.

He doesn't write the script, he just does whatever it says.

[–] ThirstyOutward@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Substitutions, injuries, etc happen all the time that change the 11 personnel

[–] Jtrich@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

lmao angry saints fan

[–] goodolarchie@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Nonsense. I'm the main character. What are these 11 other NPC's doing out here?

[–] __--__--__--__---@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If you played football you would understand

[–] koleethan@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I mean it was also a “mayday” kick, so it could’ve easily been someone staying on the field in the commotion and since they were lining up as quickly as possible they think they’re supposed to be out there. If 12 people ran out from the sideline though that’s crazy.

Edit: important to add there are different formations/subs for field goal blocks so there’s a chance someone heard the wrong formation and ran out there.

[–] PMBSteve@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My guess was maybe in certain situations they have slightly different field goal units. So one for different block schemes or something. But also probably not

[–] vangc4@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Its miscommunication between the HC and special teams coach.. they were probably going to sub a player in and the HC send in Player A and the special teams send in player B..

Someone fucked up and you have 12 men on the field..

[–] johnmadden18@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

No one has mentioned it yet but Leonard Floyd was the specific player who was the “12th” man on the missed kick. He was the only player not out on the field for the game winning FG that was on the field previously.

Floyd was one of several players on regular defense on 3rd down that didn’t run off after the kneel.

According to someone on Twitter, Floyd was on the field for the most recent 3 FG block plays in the game prior to the penalty. Meaning he didn’t start the game on the FG block unit but an injury at some point had him on the field midway through the game.

My speculation is that the injured player came back but this either wasn’t communicated to Floyd or he forgot during the rush of the sudden change.

Again, just speculating here from the available evidence. Surprisingly I haven’t seen anyone do a thorough film breakdown yet to verify if these claims are true.

[–] kiwimaster271@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

In college, we made a game winning FG as time expired to end the season. Turns out we had 12 men on the field and time ran out so we didn't get to kick again... mind you this was after a timeout.

The 12th man wasn't back on the team next year. Sad since he was a nice guy but just dumb as a brick.

[–] jqs77@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Somebody royally screwed up. These people are pros. I can understand these things happening at a lower level. This should not happen, period.

[–] Miami_da_U@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

How about coming off a Timeout where the Broncos were clearly going for a game winning FG you don’t send your defense out and then try to match them switching personnel within 6 seconds.

If McDermott puts the FG block team on the field they don’t NEED to rush guys off/on when the Broncos are.

[–] JotatoXiden2@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I thought the twelfth man was the crowd

[–] Gavorn@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Half of the defense stayed on the field. There wasn't going to be enough time to do a proper switch. That said, it's on the coaches to prepare their team. When they wasted their two timeouts, they could have known it was going to be a fast switch.

[–] Loo-Hoo-Zuh-Er@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Have we figured out who the 12th man was yet? I assume we can look back at previous FG attempts and match up the players.

[–] JunkInDrawers@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

How to say you've never played uniformed football without saying it

[–] Big_lt@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Injuries, blocking scheme of the play, where the FG is being kicked from all can cause different personel on the field

[–] Fold2First@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Omg... THAT plus.. the other time has uno reverse timeouts themselves too! The superbowl could end up being an hour longer with 30 people on both sides! Think of the "we'll just eat this call game 3 for power ups in the play offs. Like.. shut up and take my money, where do I sign?

[–] LowlandLightening@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It gets complicated with injuries and special teams coaches are generally working with back ups of offense and defense so that availability change drastically over the season week to week.

It’s still insane that it happened it’s not as insane as a player who is never out there going out there just for the heck of it. More than 12 players on a team have been out on a FG block unit.

[–] Temporal_Enigma@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Why don't teams just have a set play design when opposing teams try to run into FG formation? Just line up and let them kick, it's not like it matters anyways

[–] Rad1314@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

No, that's the coaches job.

[–] 24benson@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Every man is the 12th man on that play

[–] Matto_0@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The 12th guy probably wrongly assumed they were just gonna play defense, which arguably they should have.

[–] Lunar_BriseSoleil@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

12 men on the field usually happens when someone doesn’t get over the line before the snap.

[–] TheLuo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I can absolutely seen a situation where two packages get called or there is confusion on the side lines. You hear the STC call your package and you run out to the field. Then a flag flies. You come back to the sidelines pissed off.

“Dude called x package. I just did what I’m told.”

[–] jgamez77@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I could have sworn that the D gets time to sub out if the O does but apparently that rule is not enforced after the 2 min warning of either half (Rule 5-2-10): Note: The quick-snap rule does not apply after the two-minute warning of either half, or if there is not a substitution by the offense.
