If this has already been discussed ad nauseam, I apologize, but the number of “is this watch fake” post seems to be growing at an uncontrolled rate. Replica watches have an outright ban, yet people seem to have found a way to circumvent this rule by posting photos of replicas and posing it as a question as to if they are, in fact, fake. Some Reddit users have even speculated that many of these post are just scammers “testing the waters” to see if their replicas will pass the eye test. 95% of the time these watches are obviously fake, (i.e. if you have to ask, you already know the answer) and the number of these posts daily are simply cluttering up the timeline, in my opinion. There is already another sub r/isthiswatchfake (although only currently 7 members, lol) where I think these post should be directed to in the future.

Yes those posts and all the grandpa watch posts are the worst.

[–] Mhaelful@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

+1 for not allowing "is this fake" posts.

[–] WesCoastBlu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So you just want a sub of bros asking if their PRX 35mm is too small?

I happen to like the “is this watch fake” posts.. sometimes you see some interesting stuff.

I would rather see 10 PRX posts than any more "grandpa passed away" ones

[–] RodMcThrustshaft@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Just joined r/isthiswatchfake, great idea!

[–] excited71@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Some are bots as well... just look at their post history - they're all over the place with rando posts/ comments...

Also the response (if they respond at all is almost ai in nature). Kinda of like answering, "I'm fine" to a question that wasn't asked...

[–] itemluminouswadison@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Can we also add "fit?" question posts requiring mirror shots or 3rd party shots please

Macro wrist shot making 34mm watches look like pizza pans

But grandpa left this totally legit $90k+ collection of vintage JLC, PP and Rolex after 45 years as gas station attendant

[–] JimboSchmitterson@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’ve never been arsed to post about it, but I really hate the choose me a watch. Buy what you want dude.

[–] CdeFmrlyCasual@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I like the ones where the person hasn’t even bothered to look much. If a person has looked, they should say so because otherwise, I have no idea what to tell them. Ditto for the gazillion stupid NATO strap threads that could be found with the simplest a search engine searches, ex.: “Reddit best NATO straps”, “watch forum best NATO straps”, etc.

[–] Baraga91@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

In the past 12 hours there has quite literally been 1 post asking if a watch was fake.

There have been dozens about IDing watches, wrist fits, collections, buying advice, etc.

I fail to see the problem?

[–] bike_tyson@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Every single sub I’m on has posts complaining about how bad the sub is. Our times are so reductive. It seems popular to look passed all the good to just look for fault.

[–] CdeFmrlyCasual@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don’t think this is unique to our time. People have been complaining about their times since “times” existed

[–] Stigs_Swiss_Cousin@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I dunno, this really doesn't bother me. It's pretty easy to scroll past if you don't wanna engage. Same thing with "is this too big."

[–] DoTreadOnFudds@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I agree completely and so do most people:

[–] hallgeir@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I sorta prefer to amalgamate topics rather than distribute them all out to n+1 various other subreddits. Just my 2 cents since it was asked

[–] Awkward-Sale4235@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

i believe it hasn't been disscused enough.I am a part of many other r/reddit communities in which these same people post the same stuff in all of those too. I am pretty sure there are genuinely some that know nothing about watches and pist because they really want to learn something . bus as of lately there has been an uptick of non genuine replica and or franken watch flippers testing the waters to see if they would be able to pull

[–] Awkward-Sale4235@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

also if i might add, alot these posts are of watches that can easily be searched up through google lens and the likes.

[–] widowlark@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes please it's dominating the sub

[–] CdeFmrlyCasual@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Idk if it’s dominating but I can tell you that it’s definitely noticeable on brand-specific subs like r/Seiko and r/Vostok. I’ve been seeing a recent uptick on those

[–] flinn_doctor@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

regulate "is this fake" and "how much is this worth"

[–] RustyShank99@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The number of people finding watches possibly worth tens of thousands just lying around their house that they don't know are real or not is insane.

[–] VinylHighway@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

At first I was asking "Why would someone buy a $50,000+ watch and just stop wearing it and leave it in drawer for their grandchildren to find" and then I realized they in fact are not doing that and they are finding a fake watch.

I'm also shocked how many people's grandparents bought fake watches a long time ago.

[–] metsurf@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My dad traveled in far east a lot. He had real watches that were kept with boxes and papers and he had some fakes that he jokingly called NOLEX watches. He knowingly bought them as a gag but after he passed they were lying in a drawer in his bedroom. We all knew about it but someone whose kids were not in on it might not know an obvious fake.

[–] Korben_Dallas_505@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yes please. Seems like only 1 out of 10 is someone who genuinely needs help. The others seem like scammers.

[–] TheEndlessVoid7@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
[–] SmallButGirthy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Made that separate sub in an effort to redirect those posts, but it didn’t catch on… yet?

[–] brnkmcgr@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yes. Please also delete the My "grandpa" left me this watch, how much is it worth?

[–] cofonseca@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yes please. These are so fucking annoying.

[–] Lollipopsaurus@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Also these topics:

“Help me identify”

“What is x celebrity wearing “

“My grandpa left me this”

[–] crzdkilla@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don't get why this is such a big deal. I like seeing photos of watches - sometimes these posts, stupid and mala fide as they may be, introduce me to an obscure watch (though possibly fake), or remind me of a pretty watch I've forgotten about. When it's obviously fake, I have a good laugh, cringe inwardly, downvote, read the comments flaming the OP, and have a good day. If I don't care about it, I just scroll past. It's never caused me as much stress and irritation as it seems to cause so many others on this sub!

[–] FarookWu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Strangely, I find my life is not made more agonizing by these types posts. Don't see them as a major problem. Just flick on past them, easy.

[–] N301CF@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

pls delete

all these folks should go to a jeweler for an actual answer

[–] scratchblue@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yes please! That or mega thread

[–] Thewitchaser@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They’re not as annoying as the “iS iT tOo bIG 4 mY wRistT?”

[–] FinishingDutch@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yes, it’s been discussed several times. I absolutely hate those posts. They offer nothing of value and only drive away users. Some days the new post queue is entirely filled with fake and identify posts.

This sub used to be way better.

[–] ArghZombies@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It's a lot easier said than done.

For reference several years back we did bring in a similar rule (Itentification posts only allowed on a Friday) but it's almost impossible to automate Automod to detect what is / isn't an Identify post, lots of people got really annoyed that they had to wait days to post a simple ID question, and even with the rule in place people find ways to circumvent it.

We're not against updating the rules here - we do make changes based on community feedback, but something like this would be hard to enforce and annoy as many folks as it helps and may even have unintended consequences.

[–] Hiker22@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Ban this shite

[–] MyNameIsVigil@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It's a tough call. I hate 90% of the posts on this sub - authentication, size check, recommendations, etc. - but I'm still here, and honestly probably one of the top folks. Guess I'm addicted, ha. It's easy enough to downvote a post and move on, but actually moderating all these posts would be difficult. One suggestion that worked for me is to use the Reddit Enhancement Suite plugin to at least filter out any titles containing the words identify, fake, recommend, real, authentic, size, etc. That gets rid of a lot of junk.
