The meme coin launched by Donald Trump on January 18, just two days before his return to the White House, has lost more than half its value in less than five months.

Love that for them

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Oh no... anyway

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Important to understand that meme coins don't "lose" money. That money didn't just evaporate. It went somewhere.

So where did it go? Hmmm...

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Trump just reported 57 million he made from crypto. So yea, we know where it went.

This is the fate of literally every meme coin.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, I don't get this article. It did what any memecoin does and probably made Trump tons of money.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Meme coins are snake oil and where there is snake oil, there's a snake oil salesman. Someone got all that money.

[–] Substance_P@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Kind of, but each transaction typically incurs fees, which can be a source of revenue for Trump and his low-effort creators and also the platforms facilitating these trades. The more active the trading, the more fees are generated. It's all hype, like chumming the waters around MAGA grifters.

This is the best time to buy! When it's low!

I urge MAGAts and other alt-right riff-raff to invest as much as possible in $Trump, because in, say, 12 months, after Trump's great success with deportations, tariffs, and bullying other countries, as well as his continued uncritical support for Israel, his popularity rating will be like over 90%, and you could sell at 10x the profit!!

[–] entwine413@lemm.ee 13 points 1 day ago

Better cash in your 401k for it. With the money you'll make you can easily pay the tax penalty!

[–] ddplf@szmer.info 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Honestly, no. As much as bitter we all are towards MAGA cultists, they are still people - most of them poor, uneducated, hopeful and manipulated. All these traits are especially relevant in my point.

They are poor and uneducated, because they were born in an inherently broken environment that gave them ultimately zero chance at life. I wasn't randomly spawned in a house such as theirs, and I had an insane luxury of being born and raised the way that allowed me to form self-consciousness and empathy which was needed for me to end up as a socialist.

They, however, are stuck in an endless circle of misery and they need to be helped. Don't blame the people, blame the robber barons that feed them with lies, hatred and simple solutions for insanely complex problems. These that are easy to digest but awfully deceptive, vile and false.

And don't expect brainwashed people to be reasonable about their political interest. Don't hate them for them not having been given dignity by the system that is broken.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I should explain: i want more of Trump being broke. I wanna see his wallet crushed, his aspirations crushed, his testicles crushed.

The misinformed poor don’t deserve what they’re going through.

I think I just wrote a badly worded comment that was wildly misunderstood.

[–] Lemming6969@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Honestly, no

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly doesn't fill me with that much schadenfreude. This just enriches Trump.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I should explain: more crushing of Trump’s pocketbook. I want that fucker broke.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But this meme coin has certainly only enriched him. So that's a weird thing to comment on response to this.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Ah, true.

I’m not young, I don’t actually get crypto. I just imagine it works like the stock market: just a funnel for wealth.

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The value isn't important when it's almost completely premined right? They just sell the coins for whatever bribe they're taking and don't care about the coins themselves.

It's basically an IPO that's guaranteed to go boom at some point probably very likely soon if it doesn't just bottom out immediately.

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No one has more contempt for Trump supporters than Trump does.

He's got that prosperity gospel woman on staff, Paula White.

https://www.newsweek.com/trumps-spiritual-adviser-paula-white-warns-christians-give-church-before-paying-their-1487867

Televangelist Paula White told members of the congregation at King Jesus Ministry's Supernatural Ministry School last Friday in Miami that she was able to rise from "trailer trash" to a job in Trump's White House because "God kept opening doors" for her. But according to Mother Jones, White said much of her transformation was owed to tithe-paying churchgoers and TV viewers who put God before their own financial needs. White cautioned congregants not to pay their one-tenth income tithes to their church with "leftovers" from what they didn't have to spend on mortgages, electricity and other mundane bills.

"So let's just say I get paid $1,000 and I pay my mortgage first or I pay, what's the electric company here? FPL. I pay FPL first instead of bringing the first tenth to the house of God every week, which clearly is instructed throughout the word of God," White said last week, referring to the Florida Power & Light Company.

"Then what I'm saying is, 'FPL I just made you chief. I just made you fundamental. I just made you the basis to support all structure. So FPL, heal my child. Find my children that are lost. FPL, open the door for me to get a promotion. FPL, I serve you. I honor you to redeem off of me the curse that is upon all mankind. Because you have just made FPL the first - because you gave the first $100 to pay your electric bill."

I mean, there are people who have dumped their life savings into Trump's stock or memecoins, but I still feel like White is probably extracting more from her crowd as an average percentage basis of their income.

To quote the American humorist Kin Hubbard, ‘It ain’t no disgrace to be poor, but might as well be.’ It is in fact a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by the American poor. They mock themselves and glorify their betters. The meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel question: ‘if you’re so smart why ain’t you rich?’ There will also be an American flag no larger than a child’s hand glued to a lollipop stick and flying from the cash register.

“Trump Memes are intended to function as an expression of support for, and engagement with, the ideals and beliefs embodied by the symbol ‘$TRUMP’ and the associated artwork,” warned the GetTrumpMemes.com website. It further stated that the tokens “are not intended to be, or to be the subject of, an investment opportunity, investment contract, or security of any type.”

In short, CIC Digital and Fight Fight Fight bear no legal responsibility for any investor losses.

$TRUMP was explicitly marketed as a proxy for Trump’s influence, power, resilience, and success. This is how President-elect Trump promoted it on January 17, the day before the meme coin launched: “My NEW Official Trump Meme is HERE!” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). “It’s time to celebrate everything we stand for: WINNING! Join my very special Trump Community.”

Uh huh.

We’re gonna win so much, you may even get tired of winning. And you’ll say, ‘Please, please. It’s too much winning. We can’t take it anymore, Mr. President, it’s too much.’ And I’ll say, ‘No it isn’t. We have to keep winning. We have to win more!

Donald Trump

I wonder whether people holding that asset have gotten to the "tired of winning" point yet.

EDIT: Oh, sorry, you were referring to Melania's memecoin, rather than Donald's. Same idea, though...
