Genuinely if you keep an eye on a particular group of social birds for a while some kind of telenovela drama will unfold without fail. Even pigeons have fascinating lives once you get to know them individually. But for me nothing beats swans and peacocks. They're so expressive about everything.

This is why I love my hens.

Like, I had no idea. I didn't even want chickens. One day my wife comes home with a 6-pack.

Now tho? I could spend a whole day sitting outside, stoned, just watching them live their life. It's like a soap opera with miniature dinosaurs.

[–] Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 18 points 1 week ago

Yeah you get it 😄

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago

Man, I'm so with you.

We got into it by accident too. I'd been around chickens when I was younger, but never our own, so it's a totally different experience.

Our little trio is a source of infinite joy and entertainment. Only reason we don't have more is being at the physical limit of what we can take care of. I'd have a yard full if it were otherwise.

What other good things in life come in 6-packs, I wonder.

Glutes, maybe?

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

Good beer comes in 6-packs....but great beer comes in 4-packs.

We have blackbirds in our garden and I swear that I have seen the females shout at their lazy ass husband several times. They will tweet angrily, fly after them, hop after them, pull feathers from their tails and whatnot. True drama every time.

[–] Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 8 points 1 week ago

Blackbirds are awesome too! Very trusting especially for their size. It's almost like they enjoy the attention.

I've noticed pigeons in recent times. You sometimes see one mofo chasing another, and the other keeps running away like it being chased by some creep. Then, once the second one stops and the original gets near them, the original mofo starts spinning in place, tryina rizz 'em up. Usually leads nowhere, though I once spotted a successful pigeon. Said pigeon then jumped atop the other pigeon. A blink-and-you'll-miss thing, so quick before they left. It's something I now notice quite often, having noticed this interesting pattern.

Is your pigeons' threatspin routine like, 360 spin one way then 360 spin the other way then charge? That's what I've observed most often. You can tell how pissed the pigeon is by the speed of the spin too.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

Idk, I feel like they just spin one way a few times. I reckon they also tend to make pigeon sounds in such state. Not sure about being pissed. I think they just horny. They wanna fuck (or jump atop the other pigeon, it seems). I am no pigeon expert, though. Just things I've noticed

Pigeon Threatspin is the name of my next post-hardcore band.

My God. He may have died, but can any of us truly say we have lived half as much as he did?

~~Swans~~ geese can live for 40 years?!

[–] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 30 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He's a goose. 40 is very old for a goose though. Might not be true. It's too old for a swan though. The longest lifespan I can find for any swan is 40 years (49 for a goose). For black swans specifically 24.7 years: Black swan (Cygnus atratus) longevity, ageing, and life history - https://genomics.senescence.info/species/entry.php?species=Cygnus_atratus

It looks like black swans are extra gay?

[–] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

The age thing or the gay thing?

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 10 points 1 week ago

That's a lot of honking

2018! how do you dig up those old gem 💎? You have a folder with it or you recycle Reddit ♻️? Genuinely asking.

[–] passepartout@feddit.org 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Not OP, but I actually downloaded all of my saved posts when I left Reddit with the APIcalypse. Maybe I should dig that up and start cooking 🍝.

Seven years in and the headline's place in history remains strong.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 1 points 1 week ago

I think the only way it gets beaten is if the goose gets a better name. Say.... "Ferdinand" or Ferdy for short.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Sad :( he was so close to his goal of 69 babies

[–] Thcdenton@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago
