PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia police said Wednesday they have yet to find any videotape evidence of an alleged hit-and-run accident involving 76ers guard Kelly Oubre, and coach Nick Nurse is standing by his player.

In an email to The Associated Press, Officer Miguel Torres said there was no update and an investigation is ongoing into the report that the 27-year-old Oubre was struck by a car while crossing a street Saturday night in downtown Philadelphia, leaving the player with a broken rib, cuts and lacerations.

“No video has been recovered,” Torres said in his email.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported police department spokesman Sgt. Eric Gripp said Wednesday that surveillance footage recovered so far showed “no evidence that a crash occurred at the Center City intersection where Oubre reported being hit on Saturday night.”

Asked about the report and the validity of Oubre’s story before Wednesday night’s game against the Boston Celtics, Nurse said that Oubre was at the team’s practice facility in Camden, New Jersey, both Tuesday and Wednesday and he backed his player.

“I don’t think it’s very fair to him to say that he made up some story,” Nurse said. “I just don’t. I’m going to believe him at his word. He’s one of our players and we’re going to stand behind him. And so am I.”

When asked why he believed Oubre’s story, Nurse said, “I don’t have any reason not to believe him.”

A team spokesman said that Oubre “continues to progress from his injuries and has resumed light physical activity with hopes of returning to play in the coming weeks.”

The spokesman said the team and police have been in touch regarding the status of the investigation and details and added that the organization appreciated the efforts of police for investigating the situation and the support Oubre has received from the Philadelphia community.

Oubre has not attended any of the team’s three games since the incident took place.

Oubre signed with the Sixers on Sept. 26 and had just moved into the neighborhood where the

Where was Juicy Smullett?

[–] LennoxAve@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

He was riding his bmx and hit a car. Or he was on the bike lane and got side swiped.

[–] EddyTreeNJ@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

No evidence also means no eye witness.

[–] WolverineLong1430@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Basically the police does not believe he was struck by a car based on their findings.

[–] Drag0nborn1234@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Lmao this is making it sound like he is faking it, here in Germany you are being told that after an accident you should immediately visit a hospital or contact a doctor (even if you feel fine), because a lot of injuries go unnoticed in the heat of the moment with all the adrenaline and it happens a lot that people only notice it hours or even a day or two later.

This sounds very believable to me idk....and why would he even make it up?

[–] C0nsistent_@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Say he actually did lie… what “could have” happened that resulted in his injuries? Didn’t he have broken ribs and stuff? It sounds like he got hit by a car.

If he was lying did he fight a bear or fall off a motorcycle ?

[–] hossbonaventure15@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

this is so goddamn weird

[–] vilca908@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I got hit by a car on the side and when I called the police they said there’s nothing they can do 🤦‍♂️

[–] International-Zone99@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

So a cop hit him is how I'm reading this.

[–] ConfectionDue24412@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

How is this news

[–] MoooonRiverrrr@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

This is so unnecessary and humiliating. I literally don’t care what happened as long as he didn’t hurt someone else

[–] star_nerdy@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Look up police clearance rates for crimes. Their clearance rate for murders is around 50%. And that’s murders. Hit and runs and everything else and cops can’t be bothered. You could get your car stolen and have gps coordinated of where it is and cops would likely tell you there’s nothing they can do.

[–] pokemonizepic@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yea that’s literally the point of fleeing the crime scene

The PPD has been on soft strike for years.

https://www.inquirer.com/news/philadelphia-audit-rhynhart-police-injured-heart-lung-disability-fop-20221018.html

I know someone in a hit and run on a moped, left mangled in the street literally underneath a septa MFL camera. The PPD is so wholly checked out that they couldn’t even get their shit together to pull the footage because the responding officer got both the location and time wrong in his report. The officer ducked the victim for months until they gave up.

It’s that bad folks. Read nothing into this other than what a sad state of affairs policing is in Philly, until given proof otherwise.

Regardless of what happened, the odds of our police department solving a crime unless it directly involves bodily harm to one of their officers are mighty slim

[–] luke2230182@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

My boy is PDP and tells me they’re covering one of their own. They have the video

[–] Dependent_Way_1038@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Why would he lie about this realistically

[–] Ct2kKB24@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I mean that’s kinda the point of a hit and run. They take off so there’s no evidence unless you get lucky with a camera…

[–] kweku55@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I really dislike these headlines. The way it reads, it sounds as if Oubre is likely making the story up. Then reporters then go ask Nurse if he has seen the new reports and he has to say he takes Oubre at his word further leading people to believe that police are skeptical that Oubre was even hit by a car at all.

[–] YpsitheFlintsider@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

The last group of people we should be trusting to tell the truth is the police.

[–] ireallydespiseyouall@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I mean why would he lie about it?

[–] brendonbum@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Wait the Sixers' practice facility is in Camden NJ?

[–] Chromotoast@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

The police are stupid and useless so there’s virtually no reason to believe Oubre is lying when it’s far more likely that the police are just incompetent.

[–] fasterthanya@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Was involved in a Hit & Run earlier this year and couldn’t get their license plate. Took the cops 2 hours to arrive to the scene and In all of 5 minutes they told me to just file a claim through insurance.

They don’t give a rats ass about hit and runs.

[–] Braventooth56@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

The streets are saying it's a domestic thing

[–] Nutholsters@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Hope this isn’t a case where the truth eventually comes out and it’s fucking stupid and ruins his career lol

[–] this-isnotaburner@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Soooo many people blaming the cops for not having evidence.

Soooo many people blaming oubre for faking the story.

It doesn’t matter. The guy got hit by a vehicle. Let him heal. Let the process play out.

FFS it’s not anyone’s business. Either he lied or the police suck. That’s it. You only care because of sports. Not justice.

[–] drc56@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yeah my sister got hit by a car, if the person didn't leave it wouldn't have been caught on any cameras. We're talking major city here as well, Bronx, just wasn't a crosswalk that had cameras. Oubre ain't faking it, the reporting here is ridiculous.

[–] AFonziScheme@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

These police officers not knowing that eye-witness accounts from the victim are a type of evidence is concerning.

[–] bigger_sky@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I love Philadelphia to death but honestly it’s fucking ridiculous how common it is for pedestrians and cyclists to get hit by cars there. I don’t have any reason to believe that Kelly is lying about it. I can see a situation where he might be leaving something out or bending the truth but getting hit by a car on/near Broad doesn’t seem far fetched at all.

Hes like 6'8 that could put a car side mirror around rib level

[–] maaseru@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Was he doing parkour and fell?

[–] maxrod889@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

A key piece in the article which sums up the real reason why “no evidence has been found” that goes completely unmentioned is that Kelly just moved to Philly and could possibly be unfamiliar with where in the city he was actually hit. Not to mention the fact that he was MEDICATED when they were questioning him too lmao.

How on earth do we just jump to “yeah he made up getting hit by a car….” Like a professional athlete just decided “yeah imma go break a couple ribs real quick. I really don’t wanna play next week” 🤦‍♂️

[–] Drew-mageddon@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I don’t understand what the alternative is. He got jumped and is scared to admit it? What the hell do the police say happened to him if he wasn’t hit by a car?

[–] altitties@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

AhHA! I knew it! He didn’t actually get hit by a car, he actually mangled his body on purpose to avoid playing basketball for millions of dollars! Reddit, we did it!

[–] EnvironmentalAsk4246@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Isn't it pretty easy to look at his bike and tell if it was impacted by a vehicle?

[–] Old-Personality-4372@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

yes i totally believe the police investigated this thoroughly🙏🙏

[–] Lost_Employer_4148@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I mean it’s not like it wouldn’t be crazy that he did some dumb shit and said a story so he didn’t void his contract because he.. well, did some dumb shit

Major cities usually have cameras all over now so it’s not like it’s be hard to find some dude getting hit in a specific area especially if they knew the kind of vehicle too

Unless it was a cop they hit him which could also be a thing sure I don’t see why the police would lie about it or be incompetent in this instance, unless the NBA or the team was in the background trying to find evidence that oubre did actually get hit like he said and didn’t break his contract which is also a possibility

[–] End-Resident@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Obviously he is lying.

[–] cobbicus333@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I believe medical professionals can tell the difference between an injury caused by a car accident in comparison to an injury caused by a person. I don’t think it’s that crazy that a camera wasn’t looking at wherever he got hit. The conspiracy theory reactions to this are very odd. I get it the guys a dummy but getting hit by a car without it being on camera isn’t his fault.

[–] PeteJones6969@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

This thread is hilarious......so many people just unleashing their hate for police. It's entirely possible Oubre got hit, and just didn't clearly remember where. It's possible there's just no footage of it. Many possible scenarios where he legitimately got hit.

There's also the scenario where something else happened and he did lie. That's also entirely possible.

[–] kihraxz_king@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Nick, you DO have a reason to not believe him. Where their should be film, there is not. That is in fact a reason to not believe him.

Wonder what in the fuck he was actually doing.

[–] tc1988@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

TMZ has reported they have video that he returned to his apartment on a BMX bike that night with a rib, hip, and leg injury.

Oubre is claiming he got hit by a car in a hit-and-run. Oubre did not mention a bicycle in his police report.

With that said, I'm wondering if there's something in his contract about riding BMX bikes or if he was riding it while intoxicated. Otherwise, I don't know what he gains from lying.

Edit: apparently the standard NBA contract bars any activities that “may impair or destroy his ability and skill as a basketball player,” and requires players to get consent from the team for a wide range of potentially dangerous activities that range from sky-diving to mountain biking".

Police are so laughably bad with pretty much everything but handling hit n runs has to be up there as their absolute most fucked in the head detective skills. They do less than nothing

[–] North-Ask147@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

TMZ is the New York Times of 2023, they wouldn't be posting this if there wasn't any smoke.
