A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

I mean getting my picture taken and taking selfies. There are a few things about myself that I hate. When I'm alone I can sometimes take 'okay" selfies but the longer I look at them the more I hate them. If I try to take one with someone or with anyone watching, or if someone tries to take my picture I get SO tense and it's a million times worse. I just want to take a decent picture and not cry after seeing it. (It doesn't help currently on vacation w someone who is beautiful and takes amazing pictures every single time)

The most efficient way is go watch some videos on natural light.

You realize you don't have to take photos of yourself if you don't want to, right? Best decision I ever made was to stop participating in activities that don't bring me joy. I often give a simple "no thanks" when someone asks to take a selfie photo with me. Or any photo with me in it.

I'm very insistent on being excluded from this activity, and I've had more than a few tense conversations about this with friends and family.

Selfies were largely not a thing 10-15 years ago...

This doesn’t read like a photography question at all. You’re intrinsically valuable as a human being, worthy of love and happiness independent of your physical appearance. Stop comparing yourself and be yourself. You’ll never truly be anyone but you, but you can waste your whole life trying not to be. Shift your focus outward and you’ll find more peace inward.

Even with the best of intentions, this seems like more of a mental health matter than a photography one.

Lighting, pose, settings, editing etc. are all the easy answers. But ultimately you're asking a group of people that prefer to take photos than be in them how to feel good about being in photographs. You're probably better off asking in a modelling subreddit and it's probably more than a technical question but a larger question around self acceptance.
