Obviously $5M is a lot of money, but for a lot of middle class people like myself this is attainable in a lifetime after saving for a while. Curious what each person’s choice would be for a “grail watch” that isn’t ridiculously expensive.

Omega Constellation Globemaster

[–] fortsonre@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

For me, find the best Speedmaster Professional you can for 5k. Classic watch that will always be in style.

[–] cleanRubik@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Honestly, if i'm spending 5K, i'll stretch and get the OP41, or the Explorer 1. Both amazing watches with storied histories.

Realy depends what you're into.

Tudor Pepsi

[–] Electrical-Arm-1030@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Grand Seiko is a big contender for me.

[–] Distance_Runner@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Tudor Pelagos

Dong watch or wrist watch?

[–] randomrep1234@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Speedmaster. Used you can get it around there. New is sadly $8k now.

[–] Etkann@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

EITHER the SSASS GMT Alpinist (limited edition teal quartz alpinist super rare) or the Salmon omega DeVille jump hour (also quite rare)

[–] SuspiciousSideEye@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I love these questions because I get to say it again:

Alsta Nautoscaph Superautomatic. For that price I might could get the original, vintage model to display and the re-edition to wear.

Look at Chrono24. Not sure where you are, but trusted stores in Japan are selling really great watches - think Omega, IWC, et. al - for huge discounts due to the dollar’s strength against the yen. You can buy a lot more watch for the money as compared to list prices.

[–] Nerazzurro9@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Omega Railmaster. You can get it grey for like $3k. A beautiful, endlessly versatile, perfectly subtle little watch with all the same quality as the Seamasters but zero of the flash. You can wear it every day and I guarantee one will ever notice it. (I’ve heard rumors there are people who like to get compliments on their watch, but I guess I’m built different.)

[–] FireFistTy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I'm going with either Bell and Ross BR03 (red and silver) or Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 8 gmt (gray dial)

[–] cooperS67@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

GS snowflake

[–] Ramen_Hair@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

[–] Big_Zinsi@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

~~I am actively listening for the Fedex truck to knock on the door delivering~~ The Fedex truck arrived while I was typing this with my two-tone Frederique Constant Highlife Automatic Chronograph.

I found it months ago after I decided I finally wanted to invest (not literally) in a fancy luxury watch. My girlfriend and I have already decided to get married, we've just been waiting for the right time to get engaged, and I thought it would be nice for me to buy a nice watch for my wedding. I LOVED this FC as soon as I saw it, but I knew I couldn't have it because it cost more than my girlfriend's engagement ring and that didn't sit right with me.

It eventually sold out anyways, then I found a good deal that I passed up on and then it sold, and I ended up writing off getting this watch and looked into alternatives.

Well two weeks ago I finally made my proposal plans, I have the ring, the date (New Year's!), the location, and my friends on deck. I decided now would be an appropriate time to start shopping again. Just for funsies, I looked up the Frederique Constant again last week and found it on clearance for about a grand below what I got my gf's ring for! I waited for a week and then jumped on it this past Wednesday.

I'm gonna open the box once to make sure I didnt get scammed and to size the bracelet. After that, it's going in the closet until 1/1/24. Can't wait!!

I want a Black Bay Pro but I’m holding out in hopes they will drop one with a polar dial and put it on a diet

[–] CharlesWatches@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
  • Omega Speedmaster
  • Vintage Rolex datejust
  • IWC IW370713 Chronograph GST
  • multiple vintage seiko's like the 7a48-5000, 7A28-701A, 7A48-5010, 7A28-7010 and/or 7a28-7039
  • breitling Navitimer
  • breitling chronomat
  • tudor black bay chrono
[–] SteveDallasEsq@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Rolex Explorer 114270. One watch to rule them all. No pretense, sturdy enough to play in the pit or wear with the tux.

[–] Patient_Fox_6594@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hamilton PSR. And of course GS.

[–] mefaithfull@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If you’re looking for hybrid (dressy and sporty) looking. Below are good options imo

  • Tudor Black Bay or Pelagos models
  • Nomos Metro Date
  • Cartier (Santos) - slightly more dressy
  • Omega Seamaster (you could find one under 5k)

Options are pretty good for you for a 5k. Don’t rush into it and sleep on it before hitting buy.

[–] livinlikeadog@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Grand Seiko white birch. Nicest watch I’ve ever seen.

Sinn 142 gsg9

[–] HKasdf@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I dream about the Tudor 79170/79270, but I’d rather put that money in a 529 for my kids. I’ll check the prices again when they’re done with college years from now.

[–] FarookWu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

A nice vintage JLC that comes close to fitting my caveman wrist. Certain vintage Speedys that I will not elaborate on here, but there's a gap between your $5k limit and what they sell for typically. That's pretty much it.

[–] terp_raider@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Brosnan seamaster which I was able to grab a few years ago for $2k. Perfect watch for me, I’ll never need anything else

[–] Rotary-Rx7@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Omega Seamaster 300M

[–] Stellar_Hegemony@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I got my Citizen Chronomaster with white paper dial for under $2k used. It brings a lot to the table with a 5 seconds/year high accuracy quartz, perpetual date, solar powered, and titanium that’s treated to be scratch resistant.

Never looked at prices too much because I’ll never own one but a Cartier Tank or GS would be my top two choices.

Odd enough

I've always wanted an Omega Speedmaster. I think it looks a little understated and sleek, not terribly gaudy. It looks like a professionals watch. And I want one so bad.

[–] marsexpresshydra@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Seamaster mid-size

[–] Own-Slide5108@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If a have to choose only one watch for the rest of my life under 5k, Aqua Terra without no doubt !

[–] Glycine_11@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Tudor Pelagos

[–] spitfyre667@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Used Speedmaster. For me, also a used Navitimer. Seam as well if that is your thing when speaking about “grails”. Tudor is a possibility as well but for me personally, they make great watches but not “grails” so to speak. Highly subjective though.

Speaking of subjective, if you like watches with a bit different style, you can get almost anything from Doxa in that range and have a bit of money over.

[–] astrotim67@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You could go with what everyone else does, tudor, omega, seizing, etc. blah blah blah. How about something unique like a Baume & Mercier, Chopard, Bremont or Carl F Bucherer? Hell, even a Ulysses Nardin could be had for under $5k and then you’re not wearing what 90% of the watch fanboys are wearing.

First generation Seamaster Planet Ocean has been living rent free in my head for the past couple of months. Finding one in like-new condition as I’d prefer may be a bigger barrier than the cost.
