Basically, the title

It is a common saying today in nba that scoring 30 pts today is just the same as scoring 20 pts 20 years ago.

Will the sequence and pattern be the same?

20 years from now in 2040s. Is it possible that 40 pts will be the new 20?

I mean, 40 pts game will be a common occurrence in that decade?

In that rate, by 2060-2070. We will see 50 pts game as normal. Scary.

Ofc, there might be more rules towards offense.

For ex: Adding a 4 pt line

It is a dumb idea for most nba fans. But that is the same opinion of 3pt shot back in 80s. So, maybe history will repeat itself.

And for those saying rules might change to favor defense. Well, no. They never gonna do that. Cause A Normal Nba Casual Fans (most of their customers) doesn't want a 60-55 score in a whole basketball game.

So, are we bound to see 40 pts and 50 pts game being normal in the future?

Maybe more 35~38 averages since it kind of started once everyone welcomed the existence/higher usage of the 3 pt line during Steph’s ascension in 2014.

Averaging 40+ is fucking hard which correlates with your idea of 40 points being common place.

Only Wilt, Mike and Kobe (I think Harden did it) averaged 40 for a month. And they are the pinnacle of offense excellence.

But

Defenses and schemes always adjust to curtail new/exuberant offenses over time. So I kind of doubt it.

It depends what the rules are.

It's more like 30 is the new 25 and 25 is the new 20.

I would say 25 is the new 20

Well, last season 6 guys averaged 30 points per game. And 20 years ago, 26 guys averaged 20 points per game. In a league of 30 teams. If you stretch it THAT much, then I guess you can say "40 points is now so normal" as well.

Well if every players was as soffff as Ben Simmons then they wouldn’t be playing at 40 even though their bodies are jelly their whole careers in rest.

This saying has been around forever, it is not an “of the moment” expression

In Orlando, 20 is the new 30!

We are going backwards, strong defense and well, not so strong offense...

30 is the new 25 is more accurate we have 6 players scoring above 30 ppg right now and 2008 we had about 6 scoring over 25. 25 ppg back then was the "Elite Scorer" range
