A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

Hey, I’ve been wanting to start a photography account on tiktok. What i’m trying to focus on are photos that people sometimes call, melencoholic, “silent hill” type photos, dark aesthetic, depressing, and nostalgic. i was wondering if anyone had any tips on achieving this look. I attached some references below.

The only thing melancholy about these pictures is that people think they are worth sharing.

these are simply underexposed photos taken in bad weather conditions

they are all pretty unimpressive

Get a cheap phone or old point and shoot and go into a snow storm.

I think I get the idea behind it but these are not really coming off as interesting. The aesthetic is interesting, but doesn’t make up for poor composition and uninteresting subjects.

Not sure what you’re shooting with, but if it’s a camera and you’re shooting at night you can raise the ISO and increase the shutter speed to both get the graininess and keep it dark, I would rely on aperture to get the DoF you want rather than using it to keep the photo dark.

Alternately, if you overexposed the picture with high ISO and lower shutter speed you could adjust the exposure in editing to get it darker and lower the contrast to wash it out.

If you’re shooting with a phone then I guess just use a filter.

When shooting aesthetic you still need to focus on composition and subject matter.

Find lonely outdoor scenes at dusk, underexpose, and keep a cool white balance.

You may want to check out Todd Hido. Dusk and low contrast, and inclement weather seem to be a theme. Unnatural lighting.

Black/White + Foggy day + brutalist architecture

Looks pretty much ”november in Finland”. So book a flight, take any camera and just start shooting outside, results will definitely look like that.

tik tok is not a photo platform, its short videos, hence why we now have youtube shorts and instagram reels, and photos stopped being as used

look into "liminal spaces" that is close to the aesthetic you are discussing r/LiminalSpace is good for photos and a breakdown
