Hi all, I’m looking to purchase my first mechanical watch in the next couple of months and am seriously considering either the Hanhart 417 ES 42mm or Tudor Black Bay Chrono. I really love the reverse panda. The Hanhart is quite a bit cheaper than the Tudor but the Tudor has a few advantages such as 200m water resistance. Which would you choose?

The design of that hanhart I think is far better than that tudor

[–] Helenius@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hanhart.

I don't understand how Tudor can fuck a watch up this badly. Look at the knurling on the pushers, then look at the crown. Why is it not the same pattern? Can't unsee

The Hanhart is really nice, more old-fashioned, more restrained than the Tudor.

But - personal preference - I can't stand the choice of numerals. It feels ... comic sans-esque. Everything about the watch is Serious Bizness but then they plop those silly numbers down? Look at that 4. It kills the vibe for me.

If that doesn't bother you, then the relative savings are a big tick, especially since this is going to be your first mechanical watch!

That Hanart looks awesome

[–] robopal5k@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hanhart looks much better. Don’t know how it’s the quality, but Tudor is lacking in that department anyway, so if it was me I would go for Hanhart and safe some money.

I like the dial with the numbers more, but the bezel ruins the Hanhart for me. I know it's their thing, but I just don't like it.

[–] jarlleif@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The Hanhart just looks better for this style of watch, especially if the Tudor is on a strap.

Wrist size? plz

[–] georgetemperley@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Both are great. I would go Hanhart because Tudor is too popular.

[–] PovasTheOne@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

For me its Hanhart. Looks amazing and more special

[–] CasinoMarginale@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have the Tudor Panda and I like it, but I would suggest checking the thickness of the Hanhart. The Tudor is a thicker watch, so if the Hanhart has slimmer proportions, it might wear more comfortably and sit better on the wrist.

[–] Mavdawg28@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The Hanhart is 13.3mm vs the 14.6 on the Tudor. Maybe because it’s not an automatic. Gosh so many factors to consider

[–] barry2bear2@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Tudor! In fact Tudor is a great bang for the pocket than Rolex Daytona; Aren’t they chronos?

I like the Tudor style more but I have no idea why they insist on selling it on that horrible strap.

Imo, the Hanhart has a cool factor, but the people answering this question will encourage you to buy what’s more cool not the watch they’d buy. Some here would buy the Hanhart, or if they had to choose would buy the Hanhart over the Tudor but would rather something else. However, aside from vintage pieces I rarely see Hanharts in SOTC or any other posts. When people talk about German watches, Hanhart is not mentioned first, second, or hell, even the top 10. I think this is a relevant observation. Why don’t they put their money where their mouth is?

Also, I believe a huge choice defining element is the warranty. Hanhart offers two years, Tudor: five. I can’t over-emphasize how big a deal this is to me as a watch person. Eventually you’re going to pay for servicing. That said, with a five year warranty you have a big chunk of peace of mind. The Hanhart may save you enough to cover a repair if needed, but there’s nothing like being under warranty.

Plus, this is your first mechanical watch. Imo, it’s already bold to start with a chrono. When it comes to a small collection “boring is beautiful” in my opinion. Simple, easy/inexpensive to service, and a brand that will help you build a foundation. Tudor is in my view an excellent starting point. That Hanhart looks like a watch someone buys 20 watches in to “spice things up.”

[–] Mavdawg28@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Great points, thanks for that. The longer warranty is an advantage for sure. I wonder if over time the B01 movement would be more expensive to maintain but I hear mostly great things about it.

[–] Cocainutella@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The one that doesn’t pretend to use an in-house movement.

Low blows aside, Hanhart easily. That Tudor along with the bund strap wouldn’t slip under a sect tunic sleeve at like 17mm thick, without mentioning the lackluster finishing and overpriced nature of Tudor watches.

[–] ChicagoCouple15@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The coin edge bezel on that Hanhart is sexy

[–] old_shows@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Whoa, how have I never seen Hanhart!? That is one of the coolest chronos I’ve seen. Thanks for posting!

[–] Mavdawg28@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Absolutely! I only discovered them about 10 months ago thanks to the YouTube channel The Urban Gentry

[–] Hamking7@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hanhart every day. 10 times more interesting than the tudor.

[–] Dakadoodle@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hanhart, but with red accent on pusher.

[–] Dakadoodle@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Between these 2, the hanhart. This wasnt asked but man zenith pilot chrono is also cool- but wayyyy pricey

[–] waterbirdist@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Is this a trick question?

Hanhart, obviously.

[–] Rosschops@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
[–] hubbubi@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Tudor, the fit is incredible.

[–] high_on_meh@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hanhart. I'm also fairly sure the bezel rotates so you can roughly track hours or minutes.

[–] crumzmaholey@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Flyback. Nice.

[–] adather@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hanhart! I've chatted with Simon, their showrunner/master watchmaker - he's the best. 10x more character in a Hanhart, whatever that's worth. Both are exceptional watches though.

[–] js999111@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Isn‘t the Hanhart really thick? If so, Tudor

[–] RaceSinclair@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I love a no date chronograph 💙

[–] scratchblue@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hanhart! No snowflake hand blocking the sundials, and the bezel will be useful for tracking elapsed hours.

[–] Salt_Diet9024@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I have a BB58 but went with the Hanhart

[–] seungflower@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I tried on the black bay but it was slightly too big for my wrist. I have the 39mm reverse 🐼 hanhart. If I had the choice I think I would exchange it for the 417C version bc that's 39mm but with a see through case back. The Hanhart has a flyback and the bezel is more useful than a tachymeter. Also, the Hanhart is definitely more utilitarian in design. They even bend the chronograph and the minute hand at the end to prevent parallax. Hanhart regulates their movements to 0 to +8 per day btw. Also I think the Hanhart might be slightly thinner.

[–] Mavdawg28@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The see through caseback is awesome for sure. My wrist is 18cm so I think the 42mm would work well anyways, but having less anti-magnetic properties worries me a little. Maybe it won’t be an issue. The watch looks great on your wrist 😃

[–] seungflower@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah it'll be fine; modern movements are already more anti magnetic than the vintage ones. Even if it becomes magnetized, it'll be easy to demagnetize yourself and most watch makers will do it for free. The closed case back is more historically accurate but yes, it's fun to see how a movement works. Get the 42mm then if you have the wrist for it then. I do enjoy Tudor s smaller dive watches though.

Btw I wear mine on a single pass RAF style NATO as a daily GADA. Here's a close up pic for reference. I guess this is modern vintage.

[–] seungflower@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Btw the close back is resistant to 200 gauss. If you want more resistance and still a see through case back, METAS certified movements like Tudor and Omega will do the job.

[–] Mavdawg28@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That’s good to know! I travel a lot and at times go through metal detectors quite a bit but it should be fine. I’ll definitely try out some different straps for variety. There’s a lot to know and I need to keep learning about it all. Appreciate your input

[–] seungflower@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Airport security has little effects on watches. But the thing to watch out for is dropping them 😂 when taking them off when going through the metal detector.

But if you're doing the standard mm wave scan, I think you can keep them on.

[–] adamantaversion02@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’d choose the Hanhart. How much is it retailing for right now? Want to add it to my collection as well along with my omega, cigadesigns, and tudor.

[–] Grass_Practical@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They have an online store. The 417 ES Panda or Reserve Panda has the Sellita column wheel flyback chrono movement. There aren't many affordable flyback chrono in the market. This is one Hanhart you need to add into your collection.

[–] Grass_Practical@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hanhart. I just ordered the 39mm reverse Panda Flyback from their online store a week ago.
