From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Pull requests, huh? I have like half a dozen bad jokes half formed in my brain...

But seriously, is this a thing on github these days? Spam through PRs (and presumably also Issues)? Can it be mitigated?

But I'm pretty sure Github is not the main place to develop the Linux kernel. I believe they have their own git servers and GH is only a mirror, so maybe PRs from GH are ignored altogether? IDK

[–] yogurtwrong@lemmy.world 73 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Linux kernel does not accept contributions from github so this repo was always like that

The only new thing here is this

[–] errer@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why is it on github then? What’s the point?

[–] jokro@feddit.org 66 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's basically a read only mirror with links to the right place. That makes it easier to find or clone for many people

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Why do they accept PRs then? Pretty sure you can turn that off.

[–] Static_Rocket@lemmy.world 45 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure the mirror was setup before that was an option. No reason to turn it off now that it's a source of entertainment.

[–] koala@programming.dev 6 points 1 month ago

Is it an option? Can't find it. (But GitHub is confusing and I'm old, so maybe there's something?)

[–] Zamundaaa@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 1 month ago

Afaik you very much can not turn it off

[–] passepartout@feddit.org 27 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've heard maintainers getting spammed with AI generated Issues and stuff. This is just a stupid meme from some weeks ago, trying to merge some Anime ASCII Art into the Kernal Panic log message, because the kernel should be more weeb-friendly.

You're right, Linux Kernel development happens on an own cgit instance. Given how much Linus loves distraction, he'd be better off by not looking into Github at all.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Github enshittification...

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, surprising right? Right?

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well, no. As soon as the news was out I started looking for alternatives, and moved there. That was 2017. I still have my GH account though, and ever since then I'm watching the decline, like adding of premium features (read: removal of basic functionality for puny mortals).

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yup, I still keep mine, and have barely used it in the last 2 years. I moved to self-hosted git the moment I heard MicroShit was buying it.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

Back then I didn't trust myself to self-host that. Needlessly! It's not hard and i already had my server anyhow. But yeah, read the signs of the times and get out before, IDK, they claim your intellectual property or you get addicted to the quasi social media addons.

Spam through PRs (and presumably also Issues)?

Why stop at dating? I just realized other possibilities, like “we have trying to reach you about your car insurance

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Were you trying to say "extended warranty?"

[–] UpperBroccoli@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago

Kernel undercarriage rust inhibitor.

There are some older Linux kernel developers who might actually be interested in that, too.

[–] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'll merge your pull request if you agree to my no-pull-out request 😈

[–] ferric_carcinization@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 month ago

What about "I'll accept your pull request if you accept my merge request"?

[–] itkovian@lemmy.world 84 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Anything can be a dating app, if you are desperate enough.

On that note, I am looking for smart, charming and funny girl, who is willing to date me.. /s

[–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

I also am looking for what this guy is looking for and I can cook, clean, and sing Wheel in the Sky. I also use Arch btw.

[–] serenissi@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean I'm exactly opposite but sure!

[–] itkovian@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

I will take what I get, I guess..i

[–] ki9@lemmy.gf4.pw 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah I am a hot girl. Send me a monero and I will send you a pic of ~~a hot girl~~ me.

[–] itkovian@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Monero 15. I hope they are enough.

arf arf arf !!!

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 31 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So is this just AI spam or is it just some practical joke or protest?

[–] yogurtwrong@lemmy.world 55 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

As I said in my other comment, contrib. over github is already not accepted. And yes these are humans not bots. Pull requests were already filled with bizarre stuff for years before this started

It's just some silly fun.

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club 26 points 1 month ago (3 children)

... did c/unix_surrealism predict this or did it somehow fall though the cracks of reality translations?

[–] Tiuku@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Heck this looks like a great community. Thanks for the ref!

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Def, wholesome on whole new inconspicuous levels.
(Also lore so depressing that it makes me feel like a still relatively optimistic person. Which I'm not. But the feeling is nice.)

[–] Nuage@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Which comic strip are you refering to ?

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club 2 points 1 month ago

I'm not, I don't remember anything directly related to this, but it just didn't feel far off, like a nice titbit/random mention of a great love story long forgotten that lives is a short legend.

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml 22 points 1 month ago

One of the programmers where I worked left the project to do other things. So our project lead opened a bug ticket in our public tracker to find a replacement. Sure enough, we got some candidates that way.

[–] recklessengagement@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

Damn. I need to learn how to use git.

[–] Coleslaw4145@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

Does this count as a git pull?

[–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I would also like a goddess to worship

[–] Auth@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

dam they're gonna turn off PRs

[–] ki9@lemmy.gf4.pw 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I am not a kernel dev but I am pretty sure all issues/patches are sent/reviewed over the mail list. I think the gh issues are ignored and should probably be turned off.

[–] WbrJr@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

That resolves my confusion. I was wandering what is going on, if its a meme or what. But that's actually pretty funny. Its a way to gatekeep kernel dev for people who are willing to put in effort, which shows it's important to them making commits more serious I guess? Like it hinders people to do the AI spam shit that curl reported, on the other hand it also hinders getting into Linux dev a bit by making it more complicated than just a little pull request

These people should be hung, drawn and quartered

[–] mub@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

The obvious question that needs asking is, can we fork?

[–] JizzmasterD@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

Democratization.
