A record that was once difficult to match will probably be broken again in a year or two. It's amazing how Jokić became that dominant in the last three years.

Russ can't have nothin man

[–] Double_Treacle_43@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

You mean Metta World Peace 2 ?

[–] SuqonMuhdeek@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (3 children)

more amazing is someone is on that pace, doing it in the flow of the game and actually winning games at a championship level rather than just stat padding/chasing to break it like RW did

[–] Solid-Confidence-966@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Westbrook has won 73% of the games that he had a triple double in lol

[–] Friendly-Thought-973@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Are people still saying this dumb false narrative lol? It’s 2023.

[–] Kevinator01@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Turns out having a team of shooters with a great passer wins games. Best shooter on OKCs roster was... Oladipo? The shot the Russ assisted on to get the 42nd Triple Double was made by fucking Semaj Christon.

[–] C-N1601@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

While Jokic might break the pace, Russ triple double feels more impressive to me. Especially if it comes from a guard than a big

[–] fuccabicc@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Even more impressive when you consider that he's a center

[–] Produceher@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

It's really the opposite. A lot easier for a Center that the offense runs thru to get 10 assists than it is for a guard to get 10 rebounds.

[–] da_reddit_reader@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

So basically what Russ did is nothing special.

[–] overweighttardigrade@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

When you're paying your main guy the max, you'd expect him to be crushing in all departments so Russ did excactly what he had to do, if there's people to complain about complain about like Ben Simmons or something

[–] Relevant_Increase394@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

People hate on Westbrook and call him a “stat-padder” but didn’t he win like 70% of games he got a triple double in?

[–] VexoftheVex@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Someone did the numbers and found out that a triple double was a better signifier for wins for Russ than him keeping turnovers down (it was in a YouTube video, it was something like he had a higher win % in games with a triple double than games with 3 or less turnovers)

[–] td27@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

The rebounds were the stat padding. Steven Adams would box out for him but not go for the ball. It was a good strat because it got the ball up the floor quicker

[–] LoxDnw@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Westbrook deflated Trip Dubs. If only people cared as much lol.

[–] the_alert@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Difference is Jokic wins games

[–] Wish4Vish@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Westbrook HOFer but his triple doubles are overrated. Both can be true. https://youtu.be/RMtEWzQvKjI?si=Othh0e5qcP5GBLP4

I think Russell's was harder to do as (with the help of Steven Adams) he was crashing the boards, starting his own fast break, and either driving to the basket or having the eagle eye to drop it off for the assist.....at a VERY high rate throughout the game.

I think Jokic's is the most efficient AND the most "...DUH" variation, as the offense runs through him and due to his offensive threat when the defense collapses he effortlessly pitches out to a team of snipers. WHen someone tries their luck, he just waltz to the basket, potentially drawing the foul, and making the opposing team groan.

And he obviously can grab the board with ease. No contest most of the time.

The system they're running is so damn good and he is playing his role so efficiently that only injuries could hamper him or the Nuggets.

Again, Russell's was the hardest. Joker's is the smartest. To see both in my lifetime is fucking amazing and I hope we don't discount either, as both were not hampering their team from winning.

I was listening to a podcast featuring old jazz players and one guy (I think Aaron James) mentionned that back in the 60s and 70s, they would only give out an assist for a layup more or less. If you pass to a guy shooting a jumper, no assist for you. Wild that Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double during that era.

[–] RODjij@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

If it happens I think Russ is going to be salty.

It's one of the biggest accomplishments in the league and he'll lose it not long after taking it, and Jokic will do it playing winning selfless basketball.

[–] atierney14@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

One of them doesn’t focus on getting them

[–] TheReal_Slim-Shady@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Russell Westbrook should be in attendance and congratulate Nikola Jokic

DND - Passes the Torch

[–] needaburnerbaby@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

And has made his teammates way better than Westbrook ever did. Empowers them to make big plays but takes over when things get tight. Dude is a fucking legend. Love watching him play.

[–] savagexmyfavorite@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Shoutout to the big serb for not calling for rebounds on his way to do it

[–] Xeris@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

People revered triple doubles before Westbrook started getting them every game... Media people who pretend like they didn't matter are lying. It was a huge deal when players got them because of how rare it was- to even get more than 10 in a season was crazy.

Jason Kidd was an outlier because of how often he got them; then Westbrook just changed everything. The issue is that he was for sure stat padding to do it, taking rebounds from Steven Adams and such. It's still an insane feat to avg a triple double 3 times.

[–] Hank_moody71@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Crazy he was good just 3 seasons ago. Now it feels like he’s a shell of himself

[–] pinktwhite@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

None of these cowards want to even attempt a 5x5

[–] realfakejames@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

It should show what a meaningless stat triple doubles have become

Since the mid 2010’s triple doubles went up 900%, the most mid players get triple doubles and it’s all linked back to Gregg Popovich changing the game as usual, he stopped having his teams crash the boards and get back on defense to stop transition baskets and everyone followed suit, so guards and small guys started rebounding everything uncontested

[–] RGPISGOOD@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I remember ppl said Westbrook deserved the MVP because he had 2 more rebounds than Harden and that no one will break the triple double record again for decades. He 100% stole that MVP from Harden.

[–] HikmetLeGuin@alien.top 0 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Will Jokic ever pass Westbrook's single-season record?

Also, "a year or two" is unlikely. It'll be at least 3 years of maintaining his current epic pace. Assuming Russ doesn't get any more.

[–] ir3flex@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

He probably could if he chased them but since he's totally content with getting sombor doubles I doubt he'll beat the single season record.

[–] Obviously-Stupid@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

In the past 3 seasons, Nikola Jokić has had 16, 19, and 29 triple doubles, despite playing no more than 74 games in any of them. In the first 18 games of this season, he has had 7 triple doubles. Bringing his career total to 112 triple doubles.

If Jokić were to continue that pace for the rest of this season, and he were to play 74 games (his career average), he would finish this season with 29 triple doubles. Which would bring his career total to 134.

If Jokić were to continue that by matching his single-season career high of 29 triple doubles in the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 seasons, he would still be short of Russell Westbrook's record of 198 triple doubles in a career, at 192.

Considering that Jokić turns 30 in February of 2025, and that these estimates assume he maintains:

  • His extrememly high level of play
  • His health
  • AND his high quality teammates (who make getting more assists easier for him)

I think Westbrook's record will be safe until at least 2027.

Edit: Formatting because I'm on mobile 🙃

[–] Jiggamanz@alien.top 0 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Yea but there's also playoffs. And he got 10/20 in 2023.

[–] edgeheade@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Does Russ 198 include playoff triple doubles?

[–] Obviously-Stupid@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago
[–] Obviously-Stupid@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Playoffs don't count towards the career regular season triple doubles record.

What is the 10/20 that your referencing?

[–] QBert999@alien.top 0 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Jokic is making a joke of these stats. His current splits are absurd (29/13/9) and that's with that game he got thrown in the 2nd quarter. He's somehow managed to get even better. My heart wants to argue Luka for MVP my brain sees the numbers he's putting up and can't argue with Jokic.

[–] runevault@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Plus side for you Luka still hasn't hit his prime, he can still make another significant jump in overall ability.
