We know what you're thinking but this does not want to kill you

Says who? Maybe it desperately wants to but mother nature simply hasn't given it a mechanism for doing so. Yet.

edit: who is the one downvote -- do you know something we don't? are you the beetle whisperer? I want to hear this dissent more than you could know.

I always assume if I get just one downvote on a post mixed with a bunch of upvotes, it probably is an involuntary downvote, like when you scroll and hit the button without noticing.

[–] Jestzer@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

For me, it’s the opposite: I assume anything with enough upvotes will eventually be downvoted by somebody for whatever reason they may have.

[–] archonet@lemy.lol 7 points 1 week ago

that may be, but the headcanon of someone going "no, actually, I have communed and become one with the beetles and they are totally chill" is funnier to me

@cornshark@lemmy.world is apparently the one person who downvoted this for some reason

[–] cornshark@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I downvoted this for "we know what your thinking". The post was cute though!

[–] archonet@lemy.lol 4 points 1 week ago

my headcanon, ruined!

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I did not downvote you because I'm the beetle whisperer. That beetle is flipping you off and hoping you can see it 'cause they're doing it as hard as they can.

[–] cows_are_underrated@feddit.org 54 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They surely want to kill you, they just lack the ability to do so

The cat knows you can 1 shot it, and doesn't like the odds.

Haven't seen any of these lil guys in the last 8 years 😔

[–] Matty_r@programming.dev 22 points 1 week ago

About the same for me, but I saw one about 3 weeks ago. I was so excited because it had been so long, no one else seemed to care as much.

[–] joelfromaus@aussie.zone 5 points 1 week ago

Are these limited to certain states? I don't think I've ever seen one of these...

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 3 points 1 week ago

Same, just assume they’re all extinct by now.

A similar golden beetle shows up in south America. Anyone has the scientific name?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

you are referring to this Charidotella sexpunctata

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No, it's not like this shiny carapace, it's rather satin. The elytra is light brown with a golden-green shimmer, and the thorax and head are of a darker green-brown.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

there seems to be other charidotella species in South america could be one of those.

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It looks like this, but I could never match the picture with an ID: Image

We get “June Bugs” in California. They look just like this, but are brown and fuzzy and squeak when you pet them.

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Your June bugs are very different from the ones we get in Texas. Ours aren’t fuzzy, and they don’t squeak. They just clumsily buzz around your porch lights and hit you in the face.

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 8 points 1 week ago

IIRC, there's like seven different species people call "june bug".

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

They always fly in my hair. My dog likes to eat them.

[–] Zoot@reddthat.com 2 points 1 week ago

That sounds freaking adorable and now I wish we could trade the kinds of June bugs we get for yours

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

"This beetle merely wishes to join you in the celebration of the birth of a particular Palestinian prophet, and would like to encourage you to consider including beetles into your festive goodwill"

[–] Alpha71@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Oh, it definitely WANTS to kill you.

It just can't...

[–] Kenny2999@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

"Acute bug fever kills 1200. Sydney in lockdown."

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 week ago

Definitely a cute bug.

[–] Rudee@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You get these in southern Africa too, but our ones are just brown

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

In the Northern Territory of Australia they come in like a metalic green or purple.

[–] psud@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago

In Canberra they're black overlaid with iridescent colours. They fly noisily when it's dark

Got one of these in the house yesterday they’re bloody loud. It might not want to kill me but when I want to sleep it’s not long for this world

[–] MithranArkanere@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

It isn't one species. It's a bunch.

[–] DylanMc6@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

what about Christmas Beatles?
