Lefty Memes

6434 readers
1192 users here now

An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of the "ML" influence of instances like lemmy.ml and lemmygrad. This is a place for undogmatic shitposting and memes from a progressive, anti-capitalist and truly anti-imperialist perspective, regardless of specific ideology.

Serious posts, news, discussion and agitprop/stuff that's better fit for a poster than a meme go in c/Socialism.

If you are new to socialism, you can ask questions and find resources over on c/Socialism101.

Please don't forget to help keep this community clean by reporting rule violations, updooting good contributions and downdooting those of low quality!

Rules

Version without spoilers

0. Only post socialist memes

That refers to funny image macros and means that generally videos and screenshots are not allowed. Exceptions include explicitly humorous and short videos, as well as (social media) screenshots depicting a funny situation, joke, or joke picture relating to socialist movements, theory, societal issues, or political opponents. Examples would be the classic case of humorous Tumblr or Twitter posts/threads. (and no, agitprop text does not count as a meme. Please post agitprop here)

0.5 [Provisional Rule] Use alt text or image descriptions to allow greater accessibility

(Please take a look at our wiki page for the guidelines on how to actually write alternative text!)

We require alternative text (from now referred to as "alt text") to be added to all posts/comments containing media, such as images, animated GIFs, videos, audio files, and custom emojis.
EDIT: For files you share in the comments, a simple summary should be enough if they’re too complex.

We are committed to social equity and to reducing barriers of entry, including (digital) communication and culture. It takes each of us only a few moments to make a whole world of content (more) accessible to a bunch of folks.

When alt text is absent, a reminder will be issued. If you don't add the missing alt text within 48 hours, the post will be removed. No hard feelings.

0.5.1 Style tip about abbreviations and short forms

When writing stuff like "lol" and "iirc", it's a good idea to try and replace those with their all caps counterpart

  • ofc => OFC
  • af = AF
  • ok => OK
  • lol => LOL
  • bc => BC
  • bs => BS
  • iirc => IIRC
  • cia => CIA
  • nato => Nato (you don't spell it when talking, right?)
  • usa => USA
  • prc => PRC
  • etc.

Why? Because otherwise (AFAIK), screen readers will try to read them out as actually words instead of spelling them

1. Socialist Unity in the form of mutual respect and good faith interactions is enforced here

Try to keep an open mind, other schools of thought may offer points of view and analyses you haven't considered yet. Also: This is not a place for the Idealism vs. Materialism or rather Anarchism vs. Marxism debate(s), for that please visit c/AnarchismVsMarxism.

2. Anti-Imperialism means recognizing capitalist states like Russia and China as such

That means condemning (their) imperialism, even if it is of the "anti-USA" flavor.

3. No liberalism, (right-wing) revisionism or reactionaries.

That includes so called: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Dengism, Market Socialism, Patriotic Socialism, National Bolshevism, Anarcho-Capitalism etc. . Anti-Socialist people and content have no place here, as well as the variety of "Marxist"-"Leninists" seen on lemmygrad and more specifically GenZedong (actual ML's are welcome as long as they agree to the rules and don't just copy paste/larp about stuff from a hundred years ago).

4. No Bigotry.

The only dangerous minority is the rich.

5. Don't demonize previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.

(if you are reading the rules to apply for modding this community, mention "Mantic Minotaur" when answering question 2)

6. Don't irrationally idolize/glorify previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

Notable achievements in all spheres of society were made by various socialist/people's/democratic republics around the world. Mistakes, however, were made as well: bureaucratic castes of parasitic elites - as well as reactionary cults of personality - were established, many things were mismanaged and prejudice and bigotry sometimes replaced internationalism and progressiveness.

I hear anything over 5x is when social ills increase.

More than double 5x5x5 is beyond taking the piss.

[–] Loco_Mex@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Anything over 1x and I want to riot.

Isn't Costco the least shitty retail job? That's what I've always been told. I'd love a similar analysis of Walmart and Dollar General, so I have some frame of reference.

[–] Ok_imagination@lemmy.world 44 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I was always told Costco employees get paid well in comparison to any retail job.

[–] Chakravanti@monero.town 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

They do. Like getting about 20% versus %5 to everyone else drinking Raegen piss.

Edit: I don't know exactly. That's probably an overestimation. I do know that people who litterly get paid to drink piss make more.

[–] Tinidril@midwest.social 36 points 3 days ago

It actually shows in the attitude of the workers there. Workers at Walmart always seem worn down and irritable while workers at Costco always seem awake and engaged. It really is noticable.

[–] damnthefilibuster@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago

Dollar General is a scourge on poor people. Walmart is a scourge on its own employees and the federal government.

[–] Turret3857@infosec.pub 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If you consider tracking your employees and customers via ALPR (Flock & Co.) to be a factor in "least shitty"

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 0 points 3 days ago

That can certainly be a factor, but do they differ from the competition in that regard?

[–] starchylemming@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (3 children)

how does costco compare to aldi?

we dont have costco here but aldi is said to pay the best in retail

[–] ghostlychonk@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Aldi near me starts around $17.50/he and Costco at $20.

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I forgot about Aldi, since we don't have it around where I live. Aldi is probably better. I don't know about how the pay compares, but they respect their workers enough to let them work sitting, and that alone propels them to the top.

Because it's not American, it's German.

FYI for Americans, Germany is a country in the continent of Europe, you're welcome.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 3 points 3 days ago

What's Ee-you-row-p

[–] joenforcer@midwest.social 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Americans know where Germany is. Why are you being rude?

I only stopped adding links because you won't be bothered to check any of them anyway.

The continent of Europe is so wide, mein Herr Not only up and down, but side to side, mein Herr. I couldn't ever cross it if I tried, mein Herr. But I do, what I can, inch by inch, step by step, mile by mile, man by man.

[–] felixwhynot@lemmy.world 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

At least they have union employees

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

For real? That’s respectable

[–] positiveWHAT@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Is this sarcasm? How low are your standards?

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

American. Their standards are American.

[–] Hundun@beehaw.org 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Hate to point out, but that's the wrong use of this meme template. I respect the effort though, did not expect to see this template in English-writing segments of the socweb

[–] the_q@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Lol you can't criticize well liked CEOs because even though they're still exploitative and shitty, they're slightly better than a less liked cell CEO.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

He is not well liked. Besides quintupling his pay compared to the last guy, he also replaced the muffins with absolute garbage.

Curious choice of time and location to deploy a whataboutism.
