The world does not need another US-made catastrophe. Venezuela deserves sovereignty. Latin America deserves peace. And people in the United States deserve a future not stolen by endless war.

This is an oil coup. It needs to be treated as an act of war. donald needs to be held accountable for this.

[–] Soulphite@reddthat.com 31 points 3 days ago (2 children)

He's not denying it. He's outright admitting it, and basically telling the world there's not a god damn thing they can do about it. What country is willing to stand up to US if it's own people aren't willing to?

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 3 points 3 days ago

Maybe its people would be more willing to if they knew they had support.

[–] killabeezio@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

I feel like we do have people standing up to him and his atrocious acts though. It's the billionaires that control the media and narrative and it's the politicians. This is what the rich want you to keep thinking and this is what Trump wants to keep doing. Distract. This is propaganda and it's working. People are becoming numb to the stupid actions he's taking because of how it's being reported and how politicians are reacting to it.

If you never knew what real propaganda looks like, this is it. It's hidden It's silent. It's hitler. People think that the events that caused ww2 happened overnight, but it took years until people became numb to certain acts of hatred that started small and eventually morphed into something bigger and bigger. History is repeating itself.

Do we even fucking need the oil though? We're a net exporter.

[–] auraithx@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The type of oil they have is the one that the US refineries that were built before the fracking boom need.

And not to be the one defending oil companies, but when Trump says ‘they stole our oil’, he means they seized billions of dollars in American-owned assets without providing the "just compensation" required by international law. International tribunals agreed and ordered retribution but then Maduro just refused to pay.

There's no limit to the greed of the oil companies who legally (and sometimes illegally) bribe almost all of Congress, The White House, and probably two thirds or more of SCOTUS.

Unlike the government, which is both a major customer and a subsidiary of the biggest fossil fuel companies in the world, corporations can get their oil from anywhere in the world that'll let them.

Until this coup, Venezuela was the biggest fossil fuel producer that wasn't letting the (mostly US-based) mega-conglomerates operate with near-total impunity inside of their borders, opting instead for the fossil fuels and profits therefrom to be the property of the Venezuelan people.

[–] Darukhnarn@feddit.org 2 points 3 days ago

I wouldn’t say „the Venezuelan people“. Much rather „some Venezuelan oligarchs“. The rest however remains true.

[–] MisterFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Oh, but haven't you considered the shareholders of the refineries previously set up to refine the type of oil found in Venezuelan reserves?

The poor share holders want to make more money.

[–] OshagHennessey@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

No. Cadet Bone Spurs needs a distraction from the Trumpstein files

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 days ago

In my opinion no and that is the point.

Drive up prices by artificially constricting supply...

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

He came to liberate the oil 🛢

[–] OshagHennessey@lemmy.world 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So much for refusing illegal orders...

[–] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 days ago

Always thought that was bullshit. Armies from top to bottom are trained bootlickers, they're chosen based on ability to follow orders not laws or morals. That only comes down to exceptional cases.

Also, remember, these are people that Nazi's took lessons from. Calling out to their morals was a farcical attempt to please their base, nothing more.

[–] Geobloke@aussie.zone 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If you want to hurt Trump, aim at his base.

Stop taking the moral high ground; they don't care. Focus on Trump starting wars when average Americans can't afford to go to the doctor

[–] Insekticus@aussie.zone 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's it. You have to play dirty like them or they'll win with lies and deceit.

We don’t need to go high anymore. We need to go low enough to cut the base out from under them.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The world needs to gear up for war. As a Canadian, I don't want Canada to have to go to war, but maybe it's better we fight to protect other countries now before Trump invades us

[–] tehsillz@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I agree with you. The threats to Canada are as real as the threats to Venezuela.

[–] not_that_guy05@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Yes and or leaders will just send out mean posts about this with a wag of a finger.

After that we just move on and nothing happens.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

We’ll see. Sometimes time is necessary and sometimes people do pay attention. The wheels of justice might squeal and grind from disuse but they do try to grind forward

[–] PoastRotato@lemmy.world 36 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I've always disliked comments like this. Like, you're not wrong, but you're also just kinda delivering defeatism wrapped in a cloak of "telling it like it is." If you're gonna say something like this, at least include a call to action for change or something. Even if it feels meaningless, it's gotta be more meaningful than just saying "yep, we're fucked."

[–] TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I agree. I'm as pessimistic as they come but I'm starting to realize that futile resistance beats defeatism and resignation. Don't just fight in spite of the fact that you're likely to lose, fight because you know you're likely lose. I mean, if I'm going to lose, I might as well go down fighting.

[–] bearboiblake@pawb.social -4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

What are you going to do? Or can you not say without self-incrimination? If you don't reply I'll just assume you're doing something based like planning a CEO assassination

[–] TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm not going to do anything violent in any way to anyone. My actions will be exclusively peaceful and always within the bounds of the law.

[–] bearboiblake@pawb.social 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Boring, gotta break some laws if you ever wanna get something done. Laws defend the enemy.

[–] athatet@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

Feds can fuck off.

[–] usernameunnecessary@lemmy.zip 13 points 3 days ago

I agree. And it's exactly what the aggressor would love the discourse to be.

[–] zerofk@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

At this point a mean post would be a win. Right now it’s just “this is worrying”.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Username does not check out.

[–] DylanMc6@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I really hope Delcy Rodriguez would pick up where Maduro left off (and probably make Venezuela a bit more decentralized)

[–] LoafedBurrito@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

MAGA People on nextdoor LOVE THIS. They love having a dictator in charge of the US who is immune to the law and can do whatever he wants.

He could kidnap all MAGA children and send them to work the mines in Venezuela and MAGA parents would be happy. It would be a "team building exercise" or some other bullshit.
