Illicit origin? Wasn't that the whole point of a swiss bank account?

Nah, those days are over, for a decade or so already. Swiss bank accounts are now just as open as any other countries. Switzerland is just a US dog.

Reminiscent of when Paypal froze all payments to Julian Assange.
Justice is an illusion.

They were also fine trading with apartheid South Africa when almost every other country was boycotting.

Didn't the Bank of England do that years ago? Were those funds ever released?

[–] davad@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Not sure about Maduro-owned funds, but I read yesterday about the Bank of England freezing access to a chunk of the Venezuelan gold reserve in 2018. That action has been going through UK courts for years.

There's so many things you could put in that first spot too, many that are currently happening.

That's the usual procedure.

Point being that Switzerland actually does not give a shit about such things. Famously it kept most of the gold the nazis stashed there.

They did pay for the gold and paid reparations after the war and in 1990 of around 20% in today's value and returned 15% of the gold.
