I can totally imagine that this happened somewhere because of today’s problem with logi options +.

Logitech bricked my favorite headset because they pushed a firmware update without asking that failed to install. The headset was working perfectly fine, and now the receiver is bricked. Out of warranty by a few months when it happened too.

if warranty == “expired” then
  brick()
end

Planned obsolescence. Capitalism's great gift to humanity.

And this is why consumer protection laws are so important. What if auto manufacturers did that. Warranty expired? "send the update that causes misfires or leaves the interior lights on and drains the battery"

Ford patented a system that will disable your car if you miss a loan payment, and if you continue not to pay the autonomous driving tech will drive itself back to the dealership

Agreed! Whence right to repair?

[–] doughless@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

This feels like you should still be able to require them to replace or fix it. It would be like them coming into your home, accidentally stepping on it and then saying, "oops, too bad it's out of warranty." It's too bad that small claims is probably more expensive than just paying to replace it.

What the Hell could it possibly ever even need a firmware update for?! The vast majority of headsets aren't even physically capable of having firmware (because they connect using 3.5mm analog audio jacks), let alone receiving an update for it!

To communicate with the newer and significantly worse version of their desktop software, I guess :)

I have used a Logitech speakers, keyboard, and mouse for years as well. Will not buy Logitech when I have to replace those. As much as I loved the headset and the mouse (G502 lightspeed), I can't continue to use peripherals that are dependent on such awful software.

i use piper to set my mouse up on linux, and it has local memory mode that can save settings in it instead of relying on the app always running on background.

NO firmware updates, NO internet connection, NO official logitech app. fuck all of these.

their warranty was a pain in the ass that took MONTHS and the mouse has a lot of dumb issues. guess ill look into that 3d-printed foss mouse whenever i need a new one again. can't trust corporations even with computer mice.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I use a mouse that doesn't require anything beyond the generic USB HID driver that comes with Linux in the first place.

(Okay, okay, I could also use OpenRGB if I wanted to control the lights. But still, it uses fuck-all software provided by the manufacturer.)

I absolutely love piper.. I switched to a hero g502 Logitech mouse shortly after ditching windows cause razer under Linux was not working... Love the mouse and that it's not hindered by Logitechs garbage software

Ploopy trackballs and mice are awesome. Get one!

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 days ago

Dont use the logitech consumer software. They have their dev version you can get that has just about all the functionality with none of the enshitification:

Onboard Memory Manager

I am using X-mouse on my MX master 3 just because I've become addicted to the Logitech scroll wheel and i absolutely hate having to deal with their dogshit software. Probably doesn't have 100 percent functionality of the mouse but enough for me.

[–] RedSnt@feddit.dk 1 points 2 days ago

X-Mouse Button Control is goated. I probably used it on windows since Windows XP.
Now that I'm on Linux I use "Input Remapper".

[–] derry@midwest.social 5 points 3 days ago

Did you try turning it off and back on again?

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Logitech makes some nice accessories and such, but god I hate their software

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 days ago

Pretty sure, people drawing for commissions would typically use a drawing tablet... ^^'

[–] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago

Oh, I’m happy I saw this. I have a cheap Logitech mouse and I couldn’t use the side buttons on macOS, but they worked in Firefox. Quite weird.

[–] dandu3@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

You mean the software that installs itself as a driver from Windows update? And when you install it it installs an old version so it's absolutely useless and you're better off getting it yourself?

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 3 days ago

My mouse still works because I don't have Options+ installed
