”Share a Disney quote that sums up how you’re feeling right now!”

That’s what Disney posted on Threads the other day, and people immediately replied with lines from Star Wars, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and even Mary Poppins. The throughline between all the quotes: they were pretty pointedly anti-fascist and clearly aimed at the current administration

He sits alone on a giant throne

Pretendin' he's the king

A little tyke who's rather like

A puppet on a string

And he throws an angry tantrum

If he cannot have his way

And then he calls for Mum

While he's suckin' his thumb

You see, he doesn't want to play

Every country

has its ups and downs

Sometimes ups

Outnumber the downs

But not in America

Is anyone surprised that a corporation doesn’t t share the same values as the creatives it hires?

Disney are also really shitty at removing any context in their movies. An interesting scene at the beginning of the movie Encanto a flashback references an unknown conflict in Colombia resulting in the death of the grandmother’s husband. What conflict Disney? Who were the bad guys Disney? Further research by an interested viewer will reveal that it was a civil war involving a right wing of rebels backed by the US, rose up against a leftist government.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Encanto isn’t about the conflict, though.

It would seriously break the flow of the story if they took time to explain the geopolitics of the area.

[–] sukhmel@programming.dev 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The original comment reads more like: they could've used an abstract conflict without specifics allowing to identify it

I would add: maybe that was intentional, also maybe they thought that the US were on the side of good in that case

right wing propaganda in shows and movies has always been seen favorably and useful for the govt, thats why they allow military to protrayed a certain way.

Ironic for a company that recently made Andor.

You might have already heard its praise, but I wanted to add that it’s not just a political thriller, it’s about fascism. More specifically, it’s about the dilemma of doing nothing and pretending everything is fine or doing something even if it means using the tools of your enemy.

Senator Mothma’s speech at the end was creepily relevant, you just need to replace palpatine for another name.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 42 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Isn't all of Star Wars about fascism?

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

The rest is pretty cartoonish Bad Guys Bad, Good Guys Good.

Andor was way more nouanced.

Further Andor showed the machinery of Fascism from the inside and had various different kinds of people with different levels of commitement and reasons for participating in it.

You could really feel the machinery of Fascism slowly closing its maw on people who were just pro-Obbey-The-Rules rather than pro-Fascism and either coopted them or crushed them. Meanwhile in the rest of Star Wars the Empire was pretty much just is Big Powerful Evil For The Sake Of Evil Guys + Mindless obedient human puppets.

For the Empire side Andor showed people under Fascism, the rest Star Wars just shows the symbology of Fascism (down to the detail that all the members of the Empire are human, never other species) but not the human side of it or the machinery influencing and even forcing them to behave as they do.

Andor is much more about anti-fascism than other Star Wars pieces. But in a more adult and realistic way. That one has to get their hands dirty and give up some ideals.

On the other hand it shows good people meaning good things are still doing bad things simply because they are part of a fascist regime of which they might not even be aware of (because fascism is about manipulation and propaganda).

To add to what Aceticon said, Andor also shows the random evil of fascism, where people who just want to live their life and have no motivation to rebel are easily sucked into the insanity and given no chance to live their lives under the radar.

Watching Succession (which is based on the lives of media families like the Murdochs, the Redstones, the Maxwells, and the Sulzbergers) made me realize how little they care about the message their entertainment wing gives.

They will play both sides if it pays off. They don't care.

A monarchy where succession is decided by trial-by-combat though?

[–] David_Eight@lemmy.world 18 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Is it any worse than the American political system really?

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 29 points 4 days ago

That’s like saying AIDS is not as bad as Cancer.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 17 points 4 days ago (4 children)

Fair enough

I'd love to see the cheeto do a trial by combat, that would be outright funny

Disney constantly edits old TV shows. Episodes of the Simpsons are slowly being sanitized of "bad" things, for example.

[–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 40 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Really? I know they dropped S03E01 because they didn't like Michael Jackson. The last time I checked, Disney+ still had a scene where Dr. Hibbert explained the "evil gene" that's shared by both Walt Disney and Hitler.

[–] skuzz@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 days ago

Most recent old ep I saw that I remember, there was a chloroform store with bottles of chloroform, up close, they each had a scribbled "chloroform" label on them, but they edited and lazily scribbled out the word on the bottles with a slightly different color at that, except for one angle when Homer's holding a bottle and they didn't scribble out the edge. Not the best example, just can't recall others. Scenes are completely cut, edited, removed.

Other shows have similar, there was an American Dad ep from the early seasons on replay now, news headline in the intro credits said a pro-union joke and they just whiteboxed over the headline.

Not that it's a new concept for them, apparently the original The Santa Clause movie had a 1-800-SPANK-ME joke I recall hearing as a young, that they edited out on the second VHS run of the movie and all subsequent runs.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 16 points 3 days ago

they probably have problems with family guy now, since most parodies of seth mcfarlane is criticizing disney.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 22 points 3 days ago (3 children)

also waffling around with giving ORVILLE another season, since the show contradicts the GOP in everyway, and it gets conservative panties in a wad.

I was in Spain last year, and I think it was Seville that a literal Storm Trooper army marched past me on the street. It was a parade, but I've been wondering if it was an anti fascism thing.

"The poison. The poison for Kuzco. The poison chosen especially to kill Kuzco. Kuzco's poison. That poison?"

Just replace Kuzco with any number of evil people fucking shit up rn.

Somebody, somewhere, is updating their list of all the old pre-fascism movies and TV shows that will need to be erased from the culture.

[–] qevlarr@lemmy.world 31 points 4 days ago

Meanwhile, I'm going through this list right now of Best Anti-Fascist Films of All Time
