When officers entered the school on Tuesday afternoon, they found six victims deceased, RCMP confirmed.

An individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self‑inflicted injury.

Two victims have been airlifted to the hospital with serious or life‑threatening injuries. A third victim died while being transported to hospital. Approximately 25 others are being assessed and triaged at the local medical centre for non‑life‑threatening injuries.

The active shooter alert was lifted at 5:46 p.m. PT.

Hold on to your tuques for the transphobic right wing shit deluge that's coming.

It was going to be used as justification to confiscate guns, now it won't be. I can understand a right leaning person being happy they were trans.

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Yup. They’re commit 90+% of the violence but this happens and we’re going to be hearing about it for a decade at least.

Something needs to be done about the massive amounts of illegal weapons coming up to Canada from the US. It’s a national emergency.

[–] fourish@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

There are no indications this was an illegal weapon. It appears the suspect had a PAL and the firearms were legit. They were taken away by the police at one point because of domestic violence concerns, then an adult in the residence asked for them to be returned and they were.

Whoever made that decision to return the firearms is responsible for killing those kids.

The point from my original post was the guns weren’t obtained illegally. If they belonged to another resident in the house and the suspect just had access to them that’s a different issue regarding safe storage.

I think you gotta build a wall. And make the US pay for it.

In Canada, not the US?? And the shooter was a woman??

Born male, transitioning for six years, supposedly.

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 day ago

So, a woman.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

Fuck, you know that's what's gonna be latched onto.

As an individual I want to express my condolences to everyone in Tumbler Ridge, and may the victims rest in peace. This is a national tragedy.

I hope the community is offered ongoing psychological care and that there is an immediate effort to mitigate physician shortages that they are already suffering.

To feel how I felt when I read the news this morning, I can’t even begin to imagine the grief, misery, anger, sadness, and whirlwind of emotions from those directly impacted.

There is a period of respect where politics on the matter should take a backseat, but I will say that the BC leadership and federal government should discuss what they have learned from this tragedy. I have no answers.

Right now, I just want to express my support to anyone who may be reading this that was affected. If anyone needs somebody to talk to privately, for any reason, please know I am here if you privately message me.

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

That period of “respect” needs to be incredibly short. As in, I’m sick of these highly political situations losing all their momentum as if that respects any of the victims, including, in some cases, the shooter.

This is a mental health crisis, likely a poverty issue, and a bunch of other things that we need to take apart now because we certainly don’t do it when things are calm.

[–] JennyLaFae@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This was a mental health crisis brought on by transphobia based on my reading.

Last trans shooter was a trans man and his shooting was brought on because he was a victim of sexual abuse and a cover up in a catholic school.

Only about 5 trans shooters since we started tracking, >90% men, <9% women, <1% trans.

Violence is the language spoken by the unheard. I do not excuse the shooters, but understand they are victims of their own material conditions.

We need to do better.

[–] canofcam@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I agree. Violence is a societal issue, not an identity one.

The sooner we realise this, the better. Regardless of who you are, what your background is, what extreme things you are exposed to -- you do not go out and kill a bunch of innocent people unless there is something significantly wrong with your mental state.

[–] stinkytofuisgood@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

I agree with you wholeheartedly. To phrase it a little differently; people need to provide a moment to show empathy, reflection, and assistance if possible. To let the event sink in. This gives the victims the acknowledgment and understanding they deserve, and makes the general public more deeply impassioned as a result.

Absolutely there needs to be political follow-up to dig to the root of the issue and take the necessary actions to prevent repeat cases.

[–] jaselle@lemmy.ca 21 points 2 days ago

yikes, it's the third worst shooting by deaths in the history of the country.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 75 points 2 days ago

That's horrible. My heart goes out to the victims and their families

[–] m4xie@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Some people are saying the shooter was trans. I didn't catch that in this article. What's the source for that?

[–] murvel@feddit.nu 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Police said they were identifying Van Rootselaar in the same manner as she did in public and on social media. According to police, the 18-year-old was assigned male at birth, but began transitioning to female about six years ago.

I hate it that that is now already a thing.

Who cares if he was trans or not? If he were gay, would that have mattered, somehow, like it matters where you stuffed your dick when you murder people? Does it matter that this asshole had a sex change?

He or she went and killed children. Being trans has shit to do with that, bit now it'll be "oohhh yeah, trans are child killers" coming from the right, I fucking guarantee it

Up to 10 dead, including the suspect, now.

Shrapnel and minor bullet wounds, getting caught in a panicked crowd... lots of ways.

[–] ArmchairAce1944@lemmy.ca 18 points 2 days ago

I was not expecting to see something like this today...
