Yeah, I get that it was just a movie, but it was pretty amazing how reckless OB1 was with letting Luke handle a lightsabre from the first go.

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.
Rules
-
π Be Nice!
- Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
-
ποΈ Community Standards
- Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
- Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
- Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
- Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
-
𧬠Keep it Real
- Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
-
π½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due
- Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
- Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
-
π Post Formatting
- Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
- Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
- When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
β Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
β Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
-
π¬ Post Frequency/SPAM
- Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 π) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 π) will be removed.

π΄ββ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)
- Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,

πΏ Moderation
- We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
- When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Web Accessibility
Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.
When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:
Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

handed one of the most dangerous weapons in the galaxy; immediately points it at his own face

Well, I donβt know about most dangerous weapon. Staying in universe, on a linear scale from βa stickβ to βthe Death Starβ, Iβd argue it is pretty close to the stick.
The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.
Never demonstrates this
The thing with the OT is that if you mentally replace James Earl Jones' Vader voice with Hayden Christensen's it all works perfectly. Vader's imposing nature came entirely from the suit and the voice; deep down he was still just a kid whining about sand.
Anakin never reached the "show don't tell" portion of his training before his corruption and fall
(Sorry for the fandom link, AFAIK Star Wars hasn't migrated yet.)
I'm out of the loop⦠Why is everyone mad at Fandom?
Way too many ads, they deface wiki pages to cram more ads in etc.
Minecraft and a few other have moved away already, I hope Star Wars will follow soon.
Ehh... I always had the impression that judicious Force use and guidance got Palpatine to where he was. In charge of the weapon of planetary destruction.
Luke literally used the force to aim his shot that destroyed the first Death Star. π€¨
And Vader didn't use the force to stop them!
Maybe he couldn't sense Han coming in for the assist because Luke's aura was too strong. π€
I wonder: since the Death Star was powered by kyber crystals, is it effectively a giant lightsaber? (Also, this allows me to share my long-held head canon that the reason Lukeβs RotJ lightsaber is green is because the only kyber crystals he could find were salvaged from the Death Star wreckage)
Kind of. The book about the girl from Rogue One goes into it but I don't remember the details or even the name of the book
Pretty sure the Sith and Jedi killed more people throughout history using lightsabers than either of the two death stars ever did, even with one of them blowing up an entire planet.
With that kind of reasoning knives are more dangerous than nukes in the real world.
How likely do you think you'd be blown up by a nuke vs stabbed or cut with a knife, hmm? You are in more danger from cutting yourself making dinner tonight than you are of being nuked.
Yes, and a cat is much more likely to bite me than a great white shark. Yet I still pet cats and stay the fuck away from great white sharks. Wonder why that is?
Being in danger from something does not mean it's the more dangerous weapon. But this is going to turn in to a pointless discussion about what it means for a weapon to be dangerous. So you're right for some definitions of dangerous.
Is that a still from the actual movie, or just from production?
I just re-watched the scene and didn't see this. But it's true, after trying the lightsabre out for a bit, he turns it off, sits down, and promptly points it directly at OB1.
It's in the original and I don't think the scene was changed in any of the re-releases. But it's in the background while Obi Wan is talking for like a second.
It's one of the few scenes I wish was changed on the re-releases, since the jump-cut when the lightsaber is activated was so obvious.
It's just a set photo. It never happened on film.
...how did I never relize that Kenobi has a droid's name?!
From way back in the books or something, I seem to recall a story arc that implied he was a clone, and not the original Ben Kenobi, hence the nickname. I think that idea got dropped from the main cannon, though.
IIRC Lucas explained at some point that "R2D2" was a film projectionist term, like "reel two, disc two" or something like that.
My dude about to get that Eastern European Lasik surgery.
What are you on about? Eastern European Lasik is top notch.
I also kinda feel like having a magic sword that cuts through anything might be a bad idea when you're on a spaceship and protected from hard vacuum by a thin shell.
Isn't it canon that they can turn down the power of the lightsaber to make it safe for training situations? I seem to remember reading some story where one guy is berated for injuring someone with a lightsaber that was turned down to training conditions, implying that he had actively tried to hurt them.
I think that's true, but at the time, the only canon was Luke swinging around a laser sword willy-nilly.
To be fair, at that time, we had no idea what a lightsaber could or could not cut through either. The entire first movie, we just see them block shots from a training drone, and hit another lightsaber. We don't see them cut anything until the wampa cave at the start of Empire (and I'm still amazed how luke got his feet out of the ice and still had all 10 toes...).
That is also true!
In principle yes. But OB1 was also a very powerful Jedi, who would have sensed any serious threats
Like father, like son.
Do you think that lightsaber had a training setting so it didn't actually damage anything? Because if it did I can imagine Anakin switching that on while killing the younglings and batting them out the council chamber windows like he's at the batting cages.
Imagine Obiwan put the lightsaber in training mode and never told Luke about it. Then Luke doesn't know what they are supposed to do and basically just trains with it and fights with it under the understanding it is basically just a riot control baton until he loses his hand to Darth Vader at the end of Empire.
family guy did the same parody, they tried do eye surgery, but he telekinetically accidentally stabbed her eye with it.
