Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I don't use pepper but I use Himalayan crystal salt so your point stands, there could be decent amount of dead Buddhist monks there.

(I guess I'll have to be checking from now on.)

More of a beetle feeder, no?

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

I feel like in order to think of doing this, they must have gone through the logistics and tested the plan

is your point to have the grinder so small that you can basically observe every individual seed in it to check if it's not a beetle?

[–] Know_not_Scotty_does@lemmy.world 93 points 1 day ago (3 children)

You must not use good pepper corns then if you can't tell the difference between pepper and dead beetles.

[–] SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.world 53 points 1 day ago (1 children)

These are very good dead beetles. Please don't compare them to peppercorns.

[–] Butterphinger@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 hours ago

At 50% percentage, the peppercorn grinder becomes a beetle grinder full of peppercorns.

There's a very exact ratio where the average person wouldn't notice. I imagine it's higher than you'd think

How much sawdust can you put in a rice crispy treat before someone notices?

It wasn't very much, if I remember that video well. Even the lowest amount they tested had them say they could tell a difference. Now, if they had not eaten a treat in a while, maybe you could get away with that lowest amount, but...

You didn’t have to write this you know.

When you cross that threshold, you've just got Grape Nuts.

[–] Vandals_handle@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

Even more, the off brand Nutty Nuggets.

My pepper grinder is clear (except for the actual grinding mechanism, of course)

[–] netvor@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

my pepper grinder is clear as well, but point stands, i don't ever look there.

[–] SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (2 children)

If you'd like we could grind up the beatles and reconstitute them into peppercorn sized balls for you

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 7 points 1 day ago

please do, i hate that band

[–] I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Are your beetles reconstituted?

Would you like us to assign someone to reconstitute your beetles?

Yes officer, this one right here

[–] SpongyAneurysm@feddit.org 8 points 23 hours ago

I think I'd notice, because I look at the food I'm eating. I suppose ground beetles look different enough from ground pepper.

But I also have a bit of a biology background, so YMMV.

(Also taste, but I don't know as much about that. Maybe there are pepper beetles, I don't know about. But there are definitely some poisonous ones I'd rather avoid. )

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I briefly worked ina health food bar factory that focused on raw or at least fresh ingredients. You are 100% eating bug parts.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Scientists who work with cockroaches often develop an allergy to them, which leads to them being allergic to ground coffee. Whole bean coffee is still okay. The difference is how likely you are to grind up a cockroach vs. a commercial coffee grinder. One of many sources.

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 hours ago

Welp, that's a thing I didn't want to learn

[–] obelisk_complex@piefed.ca 1 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Ick. I've only had a few cups of pre-ground coffee in my life, because they were uniformly awful. I'd believe dead cockroaches are why, for sure.

Congratulations, you’re the inaugural entry in my “people not to have over for dinner” list.

Satan thoughts

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Serves those rich, pepper-mill using people right! If you're not scavenging your meals from dumpsters, you're probably exploiting the working class somehow.

[–] Nurse_Robot@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I got my pepper mill from a good will :(

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Oh, a robot nurse replacing real human workers!? REAL NICE!

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago

Then it probably already came with beetles. You get a pass.

[–] wuffah@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Where can I find large quantities of dried beetles? Asking for a friend.

[–] SpongyAneurysm@feddit.org 2 points 23 hours ago

Anywhere, where you can get insects as food. There are dedicated online shops and the only other place I've ever found them IRL was a camping/outdoors supplier, they are a very light source of protein. That's in the EU though, don't know how insect food is regulated wherever you live.

I never bought it though, I found it pretty expensive, don't really need it, and I'm a vegetarian anyways. I have tried them at a museum once, though. Pretty unspectacular if you ask me, a bit nutty in taste but also quite dry. I prefer actual nuts as a snack.

Good thought 😌

"Who put Natural Red #4 in my pepper grinder?"
