I have a "suspected diagnosis" (German: Verdachtsdiagnose) of ASD by a psychiatrist, and they forwarded me to a clinic that can perform the full diagnosis. I've filled out a form and been put on the waitlist, but they couldn't give an estimate. Another clinic in my region also does autism diagnoses for adults, but their website says they have waiting times of 2–3 years 😵‍💫

So I was diagnosed roughly 10 years ago as an adult. I was on 2 waiting lists of two different clinics. Queue times used to be between a year and 18 months at the time. I also told them I can take any appointment that may open up spontaneously. They just have to give me a call and I‘m there.

Luckily a spot did open up so I only waited for around 6 months overall. I got lucky. Nowadays a lot of people want to get tested and everything is clogged up.

There are unfortunately still very few specialists who are able to diagnose ASD in adults, so 2-3 years is unfortunately a realistic estimate.

If you have the money to spend, you can reduce this wait time to around 2-6 months by looking for a practice offering privately paid ASD diagnostics (Selbstzahler). It can cost anywhere between 450-900€. It‘s pretty ridiculous that you can only get a somewhat timely diagnosis by paying for it yourself, but it‘s really a supply/demand issue.

Importantly, if you decide to go that route, make absolutely sure that you‘re actually talking to a qualified professional (someone who has an Approbation). There are quite a lot of shady life coaches and counselors trying to make money with ASD „diagnoses“ which have no medical or legal significance.

Paid 850€, got told I was too friendly to be an Autist (by professionals in a northern clinic...) . Can't recommend. Needs to be ados with professionals that have the current state of autism knowledge.

My behavior was becoming noticable around 2 y/o
Parents were notified by kindergarted around 3 y/o
Fully diagnosed around 10 y/o.

I dont know when i was diagnosed. I know i spend from.christmas to eastern in a psychiatric hospital and there i either got diagnosed with adhd or autism

Well, it's been 2 years now, I already paid once out of my own pocket (I wanted ados and they gave me standard test, had no idea about adult autists) and it failed.

So yeah. Nowhere there's even a waiting list and knowledge about atypical adult autists is sparse so chances are slim I'll ever get one. The rest of the 'professionals' are seemingly stuck at Autist knowledge from 30 years ago.

I am very angry about the whole situation that after decades of being denied accommodation through kissing knowledge I am now even being denied a diagnosis.
