I used to use PipePipe but I constantly have issues with it, and it entirely stopped working months ago, so I'm looking for an alternative.

I'm new to dbzer0, please forgive me if !piracy is not the right community for this topic, and kindly direct me to a more appropriate place. Thanks 🌼

Grayjay. I also use the desktop app.

[–] Nima@leminal.space 2 points 55 minutes ago

i am using pipepipe right now and it works just fine. you probably need an update. if pipepipe is bugged, check the bug reports on the github. I'd bet someone has reported it already.

i have both pipepipe and newpipe installed, but I feel that pipepipe actually tends to be a bit better about actually fixing bugs (not related to youtube connection issues. things like UI issues, etc.)

if neither work well when updated, freetube has an android version you can always try.

I use grajay for the sync function, was unable to find anything else that could. I have it installed on mobile, PC, laptop and Steamdeck to keep the history and subscriptions synced.

Was using freetube prior to this setup with syncthing but it had problems.

Check out revanced!

[–] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 hours ago

On phone either a browser with adblock or NewPipe.

On TV, SmartTube.

I use firefox with ublock origin. Its not as good as an app, but it works for me.

[–] Beacon@fedia.io 4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

IMO browser is superior. What do you feel is better in an app?

[–] CorvusCornix@piefed.social 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Just in my personal experience, I use IronFox with Mullvad, which YouTube flags and throws the "Sign in to confirm you're not a bot" error whereas NewPipe, for example, typically works (I believe they have a workaround similar to yt-dlp that leverages the Android VR API).

[–] Beacon@fedia.io 1 points 2 hours ago

I think mullvad might be the cause of that

[–] akilou@sh.itjust.works 8 points 7 hours ago

This is what I do too. Get SponsorBlock. It's fantastic

[–] exupulosion@sh.itjust.works 11 points 7 hours ago

pipepipe + newpipe, if they both fail then freetube for android

[–] stepan@lemmy.cafe 8 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

YouTube Morphe. It's the new revanced fork after they had some drama. IIRC most ReVanced devs are working on Morphe now.

[–] iocase@lemmy.zip 3 points 6 hours ago

Same here. It's daily updates that work perfectly and constantly improve UI/UX. Revanced is like a broken down Ford now who knows if it'll start or work.

I also use grayjay, but mainly for the available backends for multipe sources.

Besides yt I have my twitch subs there and the occasional bilibili and niconico channel.

No more hopping websites to watch the stuff I wanna watch. It's now all in one app.

[–] 0x0@infosec.pub 3 points 7 hours ago

Grayjay is nice

[–] TheMadCodger@piefed.social 1 points 4 hours ago

https://fmhy.net/mobile

Many options, including ones others have mentioned.

[–] chattre@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 hours ago

second LibreTube. looks better and has more features than the official app

[–] Emanuel@hexbear.net 2 points 5 hours ago

Same here. Grayjay when it doesn't work

[–] ryokimball@infosec.pub 7 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

NewPipe on my phone, SmartTube on my TV

[–] Magnolia@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 7 hours ago

Just downloaded it and it works, thanks!

I just read up a bit and realized that PipePipe is a fork of NewPipe. In other words: NewPipe is the original 🤯

PipePipe's GitHub page says

Making a hard fork allows us to effectively address issues with quick fixes and maintain frequent feature updates

It's ironic that PipePipe was forked to adress quick fixes, and not it appears to not work at all (for me) while the original NewPipe does work.

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Grayjay mainly. PipePipe which still works for me (check if yours is updated) to get individual RSS or channel links.

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 1 points 6 hours ago

Also if you watch on browsers, there's @birb@rss-parrot.net (not compatible with Lemmy specifically though)

[–] nerv@fedinsfw.app 5 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

A slight high-jack to your post: NewPipe will stop working with the Google lockdown in September.

I personally think it will be a plus for me, as I keep YT open too much time but for those who rely on it for entertainment, info and whatnot, what alternatives will remain?

[–] superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Google announced you will still be able to install 3rd party apps although you will have to jump through extra hoops such as a waiting period. Newpipe will live on.

[–] nerv@fedinsfw.app 1 points 42 minutes ago

You're referring to the 24h waiting window.

But what is being stressed is that no unregistered developer will be able to supply software for Android. The people behind NewPipe are adamant on not complying, hence, the program ceasing to function on registered devices.

[–] D06M4@lemmy.zip 5 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Both PipePipe and NewPipe work at this very moment. If you're having trouble because F-Droid doesn't have the latest updates you can get them from GitHub and Izzysoft instead.

[–] Magnolia@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

On my mobile device NewPipe works but PipePipe does not.

F-Droid doesn’t have the latest updates

Just checked, the latest PipePipe version in F-Droid is 5.1.1

On GitHub, the latest release is also 5.1.1

[–] D06M4@lemmy.zip 3 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

I'll test apps on an older device and see what might suit you best then.

YouTube seems to be on a race against what they might consider freeloading and made a bothersome change nearly a month ago. I believe NewPipe and PipePipe took different approaches to bypass it but didn't imagine one of these would leave older devices out. Good to know!

[–] FedX@quokk.au 3 points 8 hours ago

I don't watch YouTube on my phone anymore other than FireFox with uBlock. For me, it's all a YT feed aggregated by RSS and played by MPV on Linux.

[–] Sivilian@lemmy.zip 2 points 8 hours ago

ReVanced and grayjay
